In my eyes there is no season 9 of Red Dwarf (in this reality at least) . Back to Earth is just a special (supposedly taking place after season 10) like Promised land which I don’t class as season 13 either

katerina looks so good in this episode , AKA big suze from peep show, good accent too

First thing i thought when this came out was, "Black don't Crack" I remember finding this Special being ok, they didn't want to build any new sets incase this was only a one off, but they really found there stride again with what they continue with afterwards.

Mike Doel

Yeah the next season , season 10 they get back to the more traditional episodes, which im really looking forward too

Great reaction Josh, it was so good to have Red Dwarf back after ten years. After series 8 my expectations were not high which really helped me enjoy this. All the behind the scenes stuff is really interesting. Originally this was just going to be a clip show with the budget of a clip show but Doug Naylor pulled in some favours from contacts he’d made while trying to find the movie and made this three parter which was a huge ratings success and ultimately led to more shows. The fan reaction was divisive but I’ve always been firmly in the ‘Lovett’ camp.

Bit disappointed that you didn't heed my advice and watch the feature length director's cut, Josh. It's how Back to Earth is meant to be viewed. Still, it's great to see your reactions as per usual though.

Season 10 remains the peak of my excitement and enthusiasm. So so good!

It might interest you to know Josh that there is an alternate ending to series 8 available to watch on Youtube (some minor special effects/sound effects are still incomplete however as the sequence never made it that far into the editing process) that would have wrapped up the whole prison storyline nicely and would have been a much more satisfactory series finale than what we ended up with.

I'll never understand why they even bothered with season 9, it's just so far removed from everything previous to it and what follows on from it, total and utter waste of time if you ask me, but as always there are funny bits in there

Michael Harrop

Ive actually really grown to like this special over the years, it's charming in its own way. I think the hype and expectations were too high after waiting 9 years for a new episode, there was a good few laughs in this episode alone.

Sean O'Donnell

The show is a little shorter due to it being created and aired by Dave, and not the BBC. Dave has adverts before, after and during the show so it needs to be shorter to fit the half hour slot. The BBC doesn't have adverts so their shows get an extra few mins.

This was produced on a very tight budget which meant that a full range of sets and an audience simply weren't possible. TV commissioning isn't an easy process - it was a case of a production of this type or nothing at all (especially for Dave at the time). If this hadn't have happened the likelihood of everything from series X onwards being made would have been much smaller.

I don't watch Red Dwarf anymore. I wait until Wednesday and I watch The League of Gentlemen twice.

Yeah its a shame he didn't go for it, the whole special is markedly better in feature length form.
