I agree with your points on realism. Things don't need to be realistic to be funny, and I think a lot of people who really dug into the show (as a whole) last week just don't like the show and saw it as a chance to rant. However, I thought the last episode simply wasn't well written once the little girl came into the picture - unrealistic or not. Next week's episode is not realistic at all but my god I CAN'T WAIT... I love the smell of Rutherfords in the morning.

I love so much that you are embracing British comedy. Its so different from American comedy and I really feel you are becoming a connoisseur. I love you for that, I really do. I'm so glad you have liked pretty much all of our favourite comedies, including this one.

Unrelated to FND but is there a movie selected for tomorrow or a poll?

Jay

Looks like Josh forgot or is too busy. Perhaps he should just watch Withnail and I instead! :)

Saul

If last week's episode had the characters behaving in ways no ordinary human would, this one was even more mental. Funny though. Still wish Tamsin Greig was given something more than 'nagging mum' to do.

It's not about a show being unrealistic. I love unrealistic shows. I think it's just about consistency. If a show is absurdist then you don't really expect things to be grounded in reality. But if a show's about social farce, like this is, and relies on the viewer recognising embarrassing social situations, then it can hurt the show if the characters just behave like aliens throughout. There needs to be some consistency in the way the characters behave otherwise they don't hang together as people and the situations they're caught in carry less comedic weight. I agree that the problem with last episode was just that it wasn't very good. This one was a lot better.

I think there's clearly plenty of room to find humour in both more grounded and off the wall comedy. The pairing of the mundane dinner with the folks, with the ever escalating contrived situations that this show attempts deliver. They do often work very well together. I don't think it's that it is necessarily an unworkable premise for comedy. Obviously it's a proven format. I'd say that Fawlty Towers is one example, where perhaps many would agree. That this is where it is done well on the whole. Sometimes it can be a matter of the characters being both a victim of their own decisions balanced with examples of when they are victims of circumstance as well. For last weeks episode, I felt that balance was lacking. This week was edging that way a little as well. But I do find it enjoyable that you are getting plenty of laughs from it.

That's the second week in a row, in terms of contrived scenerios. Why would Martin need to keep the frozen fox a secret? I mean, he's planning on having it stuffed and on display, so clearly Martin has no issue with Jackie knowing what his plans are in the long run. Therefore, why is Martin so secretive about the fox in the freezer, to the point of paying people off to keep it a secret? Is it that Jackie may have been mildly annoyed that the fox was frozen alongside the food? That seems like a minor concern and not worth the hassle of Martin going through such a farce in his attempts to conceal the truth. Heck, Matrin has the fox removed from the freezer and he STILL attempts to hide it from Jackie! Why?

He said it would go in the shed, which Jackie usually doesn't go into. Yes, it being in the freezer is clearly an issue. It's different having a stuffed fox and a dead one that hasn't been stuffed yet. Once Martin can get it stuffed then it's a different kettle of fish - it'll be clean and won't decompose. Lots of people start spur-of-the-moment projects that they don't fully think through, and I imagine this is an exaggeration of that.

No movies then

Mr K

Here's a question Josh, if you had to rewatch and re-react to a past series, what would you choose?

Sam Reeves

Paul Ritter's facial expressions are always brilliant. If you like this level of chaos Josh, you'll love The Carpet Cleaner episode (S04 Ep2). The look of panic on Martin's face in that episode 😅
