Millionaire was on ITV, not the BBC which showed The Royale Family. You can tell that’s a very early episode of WWTBAM as using Phone a Friend first became very rare later on.

Looks like Jim put the milk in the cups first, my mum always does that but some people hate it!

MrPhil_K

Interestingly, Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire was on ITV, and The Royle Family was BBC, so not sure why they allowed so much to be shown on a rival station. Millionnaire was nationwide viewing in the late 1990s, everyone was hooked on it

Wow heard that line a few times during rows with mum and dad at home when I was much younger! "this isn't a life it's just a bloody existence" 😂😂😂

Matgo Styles

I imagine it was a bit easier that an ITV company (Granada) produced The Royle Family for the BBC.

Makes you want a cup of tea lol ahhhh nectar!

A few jokes went over your head during this episode Josh, mostly related to British celebrities who never crossed the Atlantic. Bruce Forsythe is worth a Wikipedia check, especially before you eventually get onto Toast of London, featuring Matt Berry (Actor Extraudonaire), and written by him and one the blokes who wrote Fr Ted*. *but don't let that put you off.

Kieran B

Roy Walker the presenter of Catchphrase was in episode 1 of Phoenix Nights (as himself) so maybe that’s why it’s familiar

mwdoom

Correct David,,, thank you James lol

Kieran B

Fine if you’re making it from a pot (and if you’re using China cups that’s the correct way to do it to protect the cups by lowering the temperature if the tea straight away) but an outrage if you’re using teabags in the cup

Kieran B

There can’t be any advertising at all on the BBC, they do however have a lot of blanket rights to stuff - so they can use any music they like, I don’t know if that’s the case for this (I think the Granada studio involvement may have helped) but everything they show on the TV is (or was)/a real show and is genuine footage

damn, didnt get the ethanol question ??? is this a real recording from the show, we was taught about alcohol as 12 yr olds in school

Anonymous

Yes, it’s part of a real episode. Arlene was the third contestant on series 1 of WWTBAM. Yeah, I thought the question was fairly straight forward that’s why it was for £4000

I'm pretty sure this episode would not be shown on tv today, at least not unedited due to Animal Hospital which was presented by Rolf Harris (now a convicted paedophile) being shown on the Royles tv. The Royles talk whilst the show is on in the background aswell so it would be difficult to edit those parts out without removing entire scenes unless the BBC could isolate the audio. Shame though because it's a great episode.

Great reaction, Josh! :-) This is a great episode, a lot of pathos alongside the humour and it was inevitable that Barbara, who most of the time has the patience of a saint, would crack at some point. So many great lines in this: "It's not a life this; it's just a bloody existence!" "Poor Antony. He's got no confidence. Jim's knocked it out of him calling him a lanky streak of piss all the time!" "I've never drunk ethanol." And I love the way Dave says, "You're bone bloody idle!" to Denise. Such exasperation and given how soft and servile Dave can be at times, it was quite good to see him speak his mind a bit more. Denise may have been supporting Barbara but she's her father's daughter through and through! Haha! I also really love that moment in the kitchen where Jim puts his hand on Barbara and says "We'll get through this change thing together. Stick with me, kid." He's a selfish, lazy arse, but he does love Barbara, and he loves Antony too in spite of how he treats him - Antony's the youngest and will bear the brunt because he's a bit of an easy target in a sense. Doesn't make it right, but it's the make up of so many families! I am surprised with how much Millionaire is shown in this ep but I do think it works as it's used to demonstrate how little Jim knows, how much (surprisingly) Dave knows, and how much all of them continue to take Barbara for granted - they do get sucked in and even if going after wasn't the right thing to do, it would've shown willing at least! This is a great show. Can't wait for more, really enjoying rewatching these again, and I am particularly looking forward to Series 2, episode 7.... it's possibly my favourite ever episode.

Great episode, the moment in the kitchen was perfect. I love how it seemed like Jim was just mithering her about not being able to find the biscuits etc but really he just wanted her to go in there so he could have a private moment with her. Such a nice, subtle moment. My grandad used to say 'ahhh nectar' sometimes when he was enjoying his cuppa lol, this is the first one I've heard someone else say it 😀

Balkyne

It's funny, I was just watching an ep of Alan Partridge and he was talking about Celebs who've bounced back, and he mentions Rolf. Ooh that aged terribly lol

I think the bit where Jim tells Dave off for doing his "shut that door" camp bit is that he's imitating Larry Grayson who's act was as a bit of an old queen (to use antiquated language). I think it made Jim a bit uncomfortable.

Anonymous

Yep. It's causal homophobia on the part of Jim and Denise, finding it uncomfortable that Dave would enjoy doing an impression of a camp man.

Thanks bud, I agree this episode was great and I loved the "it's not a life" scene, it had my cracking up 😂

The royle family sat watching TV and reacting is what inspired Craig (Dave) to come up with a very popular reality TV show here in the UK called Gogglebox where families sit and react to the weeks TV. Think they do a US version as well.

Kieran B

I think Craig just does the narration, and Caroline used to do it before she died, so the show creators were definitely going for the Royle Family connection
