I'll start then. Trill is bird seed. Peter stringfellow was a really cheesy guy, with long hair and leather trousers who ran a strip club in London called stringfellows. He was a minor celebrity and died a few years ago.

Chris

Paul Daniels , the guy Dave did a rubbish impression of, was pretty famous in the 80s as a TV magician. Again, pretty cheesy but had a primetime Saturday night show. He wasn't all big illusions like David Copperfield but small magic tricks and bad jokes. Not sure if you've noticed or if it's been mentioned before (probably has) but the actors playing Denise and Dave wrote the show.

The songs sung by Jim are very old standards from the Vaudeville era (Shake Hands With A Millionaire & I Want A Girl Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad) but they survived the following decades (as well as many others) with the “party singalongs” that still would have been going on when Jim and Barbara were children. These “party pieces”, usually sung around a piano, didn’t really go out of fashion until record players became good enough quality to be used for party music (before my time but I know all of this because my late Grandfather used to almost make a living from going round peoples houses and being the party piano player in the 40s). Barbara sings “You Were Made For Me” by 60s pop group Freddie & The Dreamers. Anthony’s “muscle flexing” comes from a bodybuilder (whose name escapes me) who used to flex his muscles on TV in the 60s to that song (Wheels by the Joe Loss Orchestra).

Great reaction, Josh! All the jokes / references have already been explained so I won't need to do that. :-) This is one of my favourite episodes as although it's still pretty bereft of plot, you still sort of go on a journey and the episode shifts from conflict to harmony (quite literally) with the argument starting it off and then the family all in song and laughter later on. It just really underlines what a warm show this can be and also how it's evident that while Caroline (Denise) and Craig (Dave) have written a script, there is such a natural chemistry between all of the actors that you'd be forgiven for thinking it was all just made up as they went along. In this way, it's really important to give The Royle Family its dues for pretty much pioneering the naturalistic sitcom, certainly in the UK, and the likes of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, whilst going for something slightly different in The Office in terms of overall concept, do have The Royle Family to thank for introducing this style to the genre. Before The Royle Family, it was generally unheard of not to have a laughter track. Not knocking the traditional sitcom at all as I love many of them but it's a valid development on Aherne and Cash's parts regardless. I would love for you to see Early Doors too, Josh. This is written by and starring Craig Cash (Dave), and every bit as good as The Royle Family, but set in a pub. Think Cheers set in an English pub but without the laughter track. There is a stronger story element I think to Early Doors than The Royle Family, but it's beautifully real, funny and warm, much like this show. I don't think it's well-known enough to get enough votes for it to ever win a poll, sadly, but it would be the perfect follow up to this IMHO.

Hey Josh, thanks for this episode, great as always. If you weren't aware there are some special episodes of The Royle Family they fitted in between series' and after series 3 ended. Some of these may not be on netflix if that is your go-to for these reactions. Christmas Special 1999 (end of S2) Christmas Special 2000 (end of S3) The Queen of Sheba (2006) The New Sofa (2008) The Golden Egg Cup (2009) Joe's Crackers (2010) Barbara's Old Ring (2012) Some of these Christmas Specials are based outside the Royle's house; The New Sofa and The Golden Egg Cup being my personal favourites. Absolutely hilarious. This show certainly matured as the years went by and you'll become more fond of certain catchphrases and the typical 90s British home-life at the time. As I'm sure you have heard the term Posh to describe a more upper-class, wealthier individual, The Royle Family presents a family on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. The show was filmed just 10 minutes from where I lived at the time and life in my household was similar to that of the Royle's. Most of the references and jokes you didn't catch in this are very specific to the time this was originally aired, the younger generation here in England would miss a lot of these gags. Very much looking forward to the next episodes and Specials.

Love early doors too. I wonder if it'll do better in the polls after the royle family finishes.

Craig cash narrates a show called goggle box now, which is a show about a bunch of real family’s literally doing nothing but sitting around watching tv and commentating on shows

You need to check out a clip of miss Merton, a chat show Craig and Caroline did before the Royale family, where Caroline played a little old lady with curly white hair and a cardigan ect, but was still quite attractive! that shit can mess a young boys mind up lol

Jason

Have you looked at RTX Voice, Josh? It should be able to filter out AC noise while still capturing your voice. It's not perfect, but it's pretty damn good. Something to look into at least.

Lee

Love Jim on the banjo, he’s actually pretty good at it!

BigChanChan

He had a better life than most lol... He also only left 1m in his will, despite making over 37m in his life so he liked spending it as well.

Jim(Ricky Tomlinson) had a band in 1950s and they actually poached a pianist from another local band in Liverpool the Quarrymen who's members included John Lennon, Paul Mcartney and George Harrison and who eventually renamed themselves The Beatles, not the best career move ever.

Ian Webster

Actually think Barb might be the best character on this show. She's got some brilliant lines. Oh aye, that "You Were Made for Me" song was by a band called Freddie and the Dreamers. Since the family is in Manchester it's pretty apt because they were a Manchester band, part of the British Invasion in the 60's. Bit gimmicky, not exactly the best remembered band, but definitely from Jim and Barb's youth. Trill is a brand of Budgie food. Such a crap joke but definitely apt for the characters.
