The bit you missed: “right I’m gonna go home and make myself beautiful” “Oh so you’re only coming for last orders then”

Anonymous

Yeah, you're right about the family all being in different rooms and on different devices these days. Things have changed.

Ash Jeffries

A few missed jokes were: Barbara saying "Denise! It was a hangover all along! You've had me running around like a blue-arsed fly! You were exactly the same last week!" The joke there is more about how gullible Barbara was being given Denise had done exactly the same thing only a week earlier. Jim did mumble a bit in this episode so it would've been hard to catch all he said but the two I think you missed were: Cheryl turning down the lager as her mum is sponsoring her diet. Jim quips, "How much do you owe her?" and then laughs at his own joke. Also when Cheryl said she needed to go home to make herself look beautiful and Jim says "So you'll be joining us for last orders then?" I really like Barbara's "I don't care what you are. I don't care if you're gay, straight or Australian - it's what you're like on the inside that counts!" It's a sweet line and shows that whilst Barbara isn't a bright person, she's actually far more mature and tolerant than some of the other family members. This isn't quite as strong an episode IMHO as the first three, partly as you said Josh, due to its more mellow tone. I think there are fewer funny bits but it's still decent and I'm enjoying rewatching them! :-)

I have been refreshing my page waiting for tonight’s reaction. Thanks for another great one Josh! I love what you said about how it’s mellow, just hanging out together as a family. I find it so comforting to watch as it makes me feel so nostalgic. And what makes it so special is that they don’t have much money, so their laughs etc are coming from each other. The next episode is my favourite. Can’t wait for you to see it too! See you back here for Friday Night Dinner. Sending lots of love to you, as always, across the Atlantic 💛

I feel so lucky to have grown up before mobile phones, etc. We used to play out with friends, and spend time in the living room with our family. Things have definitely changed, I agree!!

Gary Tamblyn

...and “Last orders” is what they shout out around 11pm behind the bar of a pub, so you can buy your last drinks before the bar closes. Implying she’ll take all night to make herself look beautiful.

Gary Tamblyn

Haha, My favourites:- “My Mum’s sponsoring my diet”. “How much do you owe her” ? 😃 and “Put your coat on love, we’re going out”. “Am I coming as well” ? “No ! I’m turning the heating off”

Chris

The actor who plays Cheryl wrote Spaced with Simon Pegg. Jessica Stevenson. Hopefully you'll get to that soon.

(Just) Steve

You looked a bit confused when Barbara was handing out Polo mints. They're a circular hard mint candy with a hole in the middle, I think you call them Lifesavers over the pond?

AfterWorkReactions

That is awesome =] I enjoy watching older shows it makes me feel nostalgic. I do like this show because they feel so real, like people I know. Looking forward to it thank you!

If you like the dad the best, he's in Mike basset England manager, hope that wins a poll its my favourite film

Chris

Zero chance that works in America... Far too many niche football jokes and references.

Daryl

Maybe they should have been watching the Soap Opera Brookside instead of Coronation Street. As Ricky's and Sue's characters were married on that as well. 🤣

Tony Smyth

That's one of the subtle jokes that fly under the radar and make shows like this worth watching more than once or twice. It's brilliantly written.

I wasn't so sure about reacting to this series at first...the jokes and humour are very subtle, and you have to watch a few episodes to get the feeling. So glad you get it, Josh..... makes it so much better for us watching YOU watching IT!! haha.... Oh, and Bev Macca is fit!

SynphamyMusic

Did you have Teletext in America?? That was another way to find out what was on TV, news, weather etc. Yeah this show is pretty much spot on for what it was like for me growing up, although this setting is more like my grandma's house because that's where people in the family would gather for occasions. They used to have a TV you had to put a pound coin in every few hours to keep it on and a guy would come and collect the money every week... I love that i got to experience times before mobile phones and the internet, just before the world started to spiral out of control lol. We're still here though!
