Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

Wow that a fantastic film !! I really enjoyed this a ton, it was very heartwarming, intense, and funny. It was really tough to see Shaun take the wrong path after recently finding a group of friends who cared about him. I thought that decision might cost him his life. Usually, in a movie that covers heavy topics such as racism someone dies, well at least in the movies I have seen. I'm happy that wasn't the case in this one because I hate crying lol. I would like to think the gang went back to having good ole times after Milky recovers.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

Media fire link is a twitch link lol ?

TheHigh

Just Gzz'd Himself Lol , Media Fire link :P hope ya doing good josh mate.

Peter

The woman who plays Shaun’s mum is Jo Hartley. She played Pauline Gray in David Brent: Life on the Road. However you are currently watching her play June (fat kids mum) in After Life.

Jay

Thankfully just that. It could have been so much worse! :)

Anonymous

this film brings up real issues relevant to the time it was set in. as an Englishman it makes me quite emotional. I really apricate you liking the film.

Anonymous

I only now realised one of the movies i wrote into the poll has won, Really glad you liked it!

Jonathan Giles

Great film. Hopefully we can get enough votes for you to watch the follow on series one day. Thanks

Anonymous

I love this movie, its films like this here in the UK that you realise how talented our actors are. Shane Meadows is an extremely underated director, i would look some of his other films up, particularly Dead Mans Shoes. I also had only ever seen Stephen Graham in Snatch but his performance in this was sublime, he is to this day still one of my favourite actors, I watch shows/films just because he’s in them. Following on from this film, i would highly recommend watching the tv show’s that followed this. This is England 86, 88 & 90, i would rate some of these better than the film, the material is similar and these actors grow up through it, you get to see how each develop etc & you’ll see a few in a different light as well. Definitely a must watch if you’ve watched the film.

Smell is 16 and Shaun is 12 lol

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Such a great film. Loved hearing your thoughts at the end as always Josh thanks. I think Smell is 15 - 16, I assumed it was her 16th birthday and when they said she's legal now they meant to have sex. And Shaun is 12. Smell seems like a very young 15/16 to me. Drinking age is 18 btw.

Anonymous

Well that was a change of pace from Mr Bean and naked gun lol

Anonymous

Josh, You're comments at the end were absolutely spot on

Anonymous

Joseph Gilgun who plays Woody is another fantastic actor, great in Lockout (scifi film that you'd probably enjoy), Preacher and Brassic

Lee

Really need to react to the tv series now! Ten episodes in 3 seasons in total!

Super Mega Giga Chad

Wow Josh you lived in Gary ? And Chicago ?. I’m from Australia but from what I’ve seen through being exposed to literally all US culture all the time, is that they seem like two of the most scary places , I’m sure the reality is not as it’s portrayed in media but I for example I saw a YT video of just a car driving around all the streets with all the abandoned houses. It’s not a race thing saying it’s scary - like when I went to San Francisco in the mid 90’s it was scary af, with the homelessness.

Alex P

Is the woman who shaves his head Kate Fleming from Line of Duty? (Vicky McClure?) I recognised her voice before I recognised her face. edit: just looked it up - it is, and she would have been like 22-23

Alex P

Also, Shaun's mum looks a lot like Weird Al in some scenes!

Contex - It's Just A Ride

You'll see one of the actors in life's too short if you ever get around to it. She's brill

Joe S

Looking forward to watching this later, I think we’ve also gotta vote in the show now too to finish the story

Steve Small

Hey Josh. Fantastic reaction man. Loved watching this again with you. Such a poignant film mixed with happiness and sadness that elicits feelings of anger and love in equal measure. Sean's mum is the same actress that plays one of the tax inspectors in Alan Partridge and she also plays Brian Potter's girlfriend that breaks his heart in Phoenix Nights. Stephen Graham is my most favourite actor. I like everything he has been in. He plays such varied roles and nails them every time. Every one of his characters is completely believable. You should watch "Save Me" and "Save Me Too" - his role/acting in them is phenomenal. The girl that dates Sean is probably supposed to be about 16/17 but you can tell by the way she is that she probably has a mental age of a few years younger. Her and Sean's mum (the actors) are also in "Life's too Short", which is an hilarious comedy series. You should watch that, too. The girl who plays Lol (Vicky McClure) is now a household name in the UK as she is a lead character in Britain's current best loved drama "Line of Duty". All the best from the UK.

Anonymous

Such a fantastic film. As other have said, I very much recommend the series! Very short but so good, most of my favourite moments of This Is England are from the series!

Steve Small

2 of them... Warwick's ex wife, and the dippy office girl 👍🏻

Anonymous

I’ll just echo what everyone else seems to be saying and say you must watch the series they did following on from this film, you would really enjoy them, glad you enjoyed an insight into what England was like up north in the 80s

Lawson Briggs

Stephen Graham's incredible in this. as he is in most things to be fair.

Nick

Forgot how much I loved this movie... great reaction!

Anonymous

Great reaction to such a unique film! Still have a mad crush on Lol from this :D

Anonymous

The bit where Smell kisses Shaun is a little weird, but I think it's kinda a normal thing when you're about 12/13 to make out with a 15/16 year old who's twice your height because you haven't had your growth spurt yet. Never got asked if I wanted to suck her tits though, outside of Langdon Sq. Community Centre XD Yeah, Smell would have been just turning 16 and Shaun (Sean?) is about 12. That kind of thing, like I said, seemed quite normal at the time. Nowt sinister, more like larping a relationship.

Josip Buretic

All what I have to say about this movie is that was very intense movie!!woooooow 👏🏻👏🏻 Great reaction as always

Anonymous

You have to watch the series now. There’s only about 10 episodes in the 3 series they brought out after ( first one is This is England 86) the series is more light hearted at times but just as heart wrenching when it wants to be, in my opinion the series is better as you get some brilliant character development. I used to be a skinhead and still to this day wear shirts and braces, this movie did well showing the two different types of skinheads. You had your skinheads who listened to West Indian/working class British fusion of music Ska/2 tone and they tended to be smarter dressed with pants instead of camo pants and fitted blazers and shirts (with the obvious braces) and Harrington jackets. The other skinheads were the racist national front types who listened to more Oi music and harder punk and they looked scruffy in my opinion with camo pants and often t-shirts it’d be a completely difference dress style if it wasn’t for the braces and boots and odd crossover with Ben Sherman shirts

Spooony

The actor who plays Shaun is only a couple of years younger than Smell's. It's just that the gap looks much bigger because of puberty.

David Lyons

Shaun and Smell is basically how I imagine Lister from Red Dwarf claims to have lost his virginity on that golf course!

Anonymous

Buzzing for you to watch the series, a lot more comedic and at the same time, a lot more DARK

SynphamyMusic

Yeah, Combo is such a distressing character to watch. Graham is such a phenomenal actor... This is England is one of those shows that you don't forget. I'll vote the heck out of it if it pops up in the polls. Vicky McClure who plays Lol is from Nottingham, pretty much just up the road from where i live! It never feels normal to me hearing my own accent on screen.

Anonymous

Yes Maggie Thatcher was the British Prime Minister throughout the 80s and she made life extremely difficult for the working class, which is why you hear her name quite a bit from this period. Cola Cubes were hard boiled sweets you’d buy from shops like Mr Sandhu’s along with other sweets like that (don’t know if they still make them...probably not). I echo what others have said that the TV series is a must now that you’ve seen the film. It follows on the events from the film over a 4 year period and I’d even go as far as to say it’s even better than the film in some ways. Also as others said the film Dead Man’s Shoes is worth a watch (same writer and director Shane Meadows).

Keith Pratt

Vicky McClure is amazing in the TV series where she has a lot more to do. All the Shane Meadows films I've seen have been good. Looking through his filmography, A Room for Romeo Brass, Dead Man's Shoes and Somers Town are the other ones that are the most memorable to me.

Anonymous

Glad to see you enjoyed it. will be voting for the follow up tv series for when you do another weekly poll. This is England 86 / 88 / 90 short tv series about 3/4 episodes each. This movie & your next one trainspotting sums up UK in 80's and 90's perfectly

Anonymous

Loved the reaction man. This film is such a fav of mine. Deffo recommend the tv series follow up, such a great cast of actors.

Anonymous

I love this film and the 3 series just add to the story in different time periods I would definitely recommend the series only about 12 episodes in total. I really enjoyed watching your reaction Josh as Shane Meadows the creator does a great job of making you feel like you are there with the characters and laugh when they do and of course sad when it goes wrong, great reaction Josh I think it it is good to mix it up now and again from pure comedy . All the best man

Ash Jeffries

"That film was amazing". :-D So, so glad you thought so, Josh. It is one of my all-time favourite films, so incredibly well acted and Shane Meadows is high on my list of top writers/directors. The way he juxtaposes natural humour with the most harrowing violence and pathos, seamlessly, nothing at all jarring about it - that's a talent. His message is crystal clear here and simultaneously, as you said at the end, quite multi-layered and complex. He isn't writing the Marvel universe and the character detail is tangible. I would strongly recommend you put the TV series on the next poll. It's 11 brilliant, sweet, shocking, funny, moving, exquisitely well written and superbly acted episodes of top tier TV. I love this film but I give special credence to the TV series for the reasons others have already given- character development. It was as good as it possibly could have been in a 100 minute film but the TV series is 10 x 50 minutes and 1 x 75 minute finale and the characters' journeys are detailed, surprising at times, and utterly involving. You will be so grateful you've seen it all. A TV series that stays with you.

Anonymous

Another great performance from Stephen Graham (Combo), he is such an amazing actor. He was great in Snatch, Broadwalk Empire and The Irishman.

Louis Hessey-Antell

This was also Ricky Gervais' film of the year when it came out.

Jack Nicholas

There is a three season long show that continues this (samse cast). It follows the story from 1986 until 1990.

Sean Riley

Is uploading to Vimeo not an option?

Anonymous

You absolutely have to react to the 3 seasons that follow this. All of them are fantastic and just as moving in some cases.

Anonymous

A great film and series I would definitely enjoy again if won on the polls. As a black( west indian) British born I relate to what you said in the review at the end 100% that everyones experiences are different and how you deal with it is key fortunately as a youngster growing up I was sheltered but I saw (what I called bullying for the way one looked) in schools right across the board from black indian asian and white especially if redheaded or ginger freckled etc getting harsh treatment. The way I see it Josh were all put on this earth cannot help the way we look so it's nice to have platforms like this where we can all get together and have fun escapism and learn from one another great review and reaction look forward to the next.

Is anyone else getting redirected to twitch on the media fire link?

just watched now - yes super intense this movie at times. Stephen Graham is a fantastic actor for sure. You need to check out the tv series, think they made three all set in different decades - same cast

Craig Burns

I think if you enjoyed this film American history x would be a great watch aswell, you asked about the boys mum and where you had seen her she is the mum of the kid in afterlife who made the paper because he could blow flutes with his nose

AfterWorkReactions

LOL yea parts of Gary and Chicago can be rough but there are also nicer areas so you just have to know where not to go lol

AfterWorkReactions

Thank you, it was a great film I enjoyed it! Very different than what we normally watch but good! Thanks for the ages that makes sense.

Anonymous

Beautiful film, and a beautiful summation at the end on your part too! Hope everyone's having a good day!

Tony Smyth

C'mon Josh... you know what you need to do next... Almost every comment on this thread is hinting at it.

Jon Johnson

Stephen Graham is such an amazing actor

AfterWorkReactions

It was great man I enjoyed it alot. I do want to check out the show so I will add it to a future show poll for you all to vote on!

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks bud I will add it to a future movie poll. I enjoyed this film alot so I am looking forward to watching the show!

Super Mega Giga Chad

What a brilliant film. Was my first time viewing it and I had no idea about the plot. Most thought provoking theme is how it displays that within any ideology or movement there are characters like ‘Woody’ that are charismatic and inclusive, creating a sense of family and belonging, who are only involved tangentially with movement such as into the fashion and culture. Yet it shows that every movement also has the stronger type of leader like ‘Combo’ the type who is aggressively and constantly testing your commitment and loyalty to the cause. What the film shows is that the combo guys inevitably rise to the top in the movement either by persuasion or by force and violence. Take over and end up making every more extreme and radical. In this case it’s nationalism/fascism but could also be applied to socialism, BLM, neo conservatism..whatever .. it’s human nature that the strongest and least morally fit people rise to the top in these sort of hierarchies. Also the actor that plays combo gives a Daniel day Lewis like performance. He is equally good as a young al Capone in boardwalk empire.

Anonymous

And also the woman from phoenix nights who dates brian but turns out she is investigating him for benefit fraud if i remember right lol

Super Mega Giga Chad

There is an Australian film called ‘Romper stomper’ which is very similar to this but not as insightful and more hardcore. Probably not the best suggestion for this channel but worth checking out if so inclined. Russel Crowes first role.

(Just) Steve

Two points which I haven't seen mentioned: 1. The guy holding the National Front meeting in the pub is the same actor who played the leader of the gang in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. 2. Hearing you talk about paintballing without any protection made me think of Byker Grove. Skip to 2:10. This happened on a kids show! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FztmxxliSmc

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks bud I will be adding the show to a future poll =] I agree it is nice to watch something different sometimes.

Tony Smyth

I envy you Tony Bishop... You haven't seen the TV episodes yet. They'll blow your mind. The movie is just a preamble.

Tony Smyth

There is an Irish film called 'Adam & Paul' which has nothing whatsoever to do with 'Romper Stomper'. but it should be mentioned, in a passive aggressive manner. It's actually funny. And it would fit here... without a Crowe bar

Anonymous

The Commitments needs a place in the poll for sure.

Anonymous

The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van AKA The Barrytown Trilogy. Fantastic slice of Irish life and culture.

Tacitus G. Kilgore

If you liked it, you'll be happy to know it was turned into a brilliant T.V mini series.. same cast and it's just as good as the movie from what I remember follows them as they age into the 90s... it will hook you... Definitely put in on the next poll...

Tacitus G. Kilgore

"This is England 86" is the first season... Seriously, you gotta watch it...

Scott

yes series was great aswel., new series is being filmed as wel,

Anonymous

Can I suggest Dead Man’s Shoes from the same director, phenomenal film and great, iconic performance from Paddy Consadine

Anonymous

Not sure Banjo was laughing towards the end, either way its shocking how he got a glass to the head for his troubles and the old boy getting called a goggled eyed twat after Combo loses it.

Anonymous

When combo beat his own 2 friends after he beat milky, I took that as combo being angry at them for turning him into what he became.

ArtVandalHey!

"All violence is an attempt to replace shame with self-esteem" applies to this movie pretty well.

Anonymous

he had so much issues deep down that's why the character become so angry and hateful he was also in love with the girl Flo and when she she told him she did not enjoy having sex with him and not felt the same way it pushed him further over the edge

mrtheevilmage

My Uncle was in Falklands war......He told me it was horrrendously boring...He flew around in a helicopter shooting penguins and drinking he told me...then again it may have been different for the air force

Anonymous

I was 2 years old when this film was set, so i missed this era. That said I wish i had a friend like woody, I was bullied a lot at school and the gang shaun joined in this film was awesome. All happy, wholesome lads without the macho bullshit, just want to have fun, respect and look after each other and know when to be polite and use manners, unheard of in most teenage gangs now

Anonymous

Oh if you enjoyed this You Need to watch the TV show. They made 3 series with all actors from the film returning for the show, and it is amazing, very well written, plus we get to find out what happened to combo, milky and all the other characters afterwards. Some funny moments, some heartbreaking moments, but i feel the TV show is much better than the film

Anonymous

lol stephen graham plays pitbulls so well, he was great as al capone too in boardwalk empire
