I do love this series so much...The older lady, Anne in the graveyard (Penelope Wilton) is from one of Rickys (and mine) favorite 1980s sitcoms 'ever decreasing circles' plus she was Shauns mum in 'Shaun of the dead'.

Great series. The one small flaw I found and I dont know if anyone agrees, but when he’s watching videos of his wife, its kinda obnoxious. Like the screaming and the over the top laughter I dont think is realistic. I may have completely overlooked this and might be on my own thinking this. Anyway, great to see you’re liking it. One of rickys least comedic series whilst still being funny, great message and sound track too!

Andrew

Damn Josh! you are such a good person, there was actual genuine expressions of disappointment in your face when he took them drugs,I could actually see the anguish in your face about his well-being,great to see literally pure reactions from the heart Really glad this won the poll, have loved the first 2 episodes

Lovro

I really like Lenny as a character and that psychiatrist is just so extra and ridiculous, this is just the start lol. The fish fingers and beans scene in the caffe is great too. My favourite quote from this episode has to be “why would people rather be famous for being shit than not be famous at all”. It’s sth i’ve been asking myself ever since i realised how obsessed with being famous some people are.

Chris

Josh, I implore you to watch Spaced. Ignore the poll in its case, please! It is the reason the films Shaun of the dead and Hot Fuzz exist and as such is right up your street. It's steeped in references to the exact type of pop culture you're into. There are so many people who haven't seen it and that's why it's scoring so low in the polls. It really is a masterpiece and by not watching you're missing out on an absolute, all time , cult classic.

Alexander Bond

He's been going on about that since Extras. He tends to hark on the same themes again and again, and is in no way subtle about it, which is largely why I don't like the majority of his work in TV and film.

Alexander Bond

To Josh's point about the woman in the office being dumb, Gervais does that a LOT with characters, makes them unrealistically idiotic. It's a quick device for getting into awkward or embarrassing situations by having them say something ridiculous that no human who wasn't actually mentally deficient would say. Maggie from Extras is the most overt example, in fact everyone in that show was a complete idiot except Andy. Why would someone surround themselves with total morons?

It surprises me that, despite all the Ricky Gervais shows winning the polls, that Life's Too Short barely gets a mention. It combines the elements of The Office (a documentary crew following an insecure narcissist) with Extras (cringey celebrity caricatures), has Ricky and Steve in each episode, and Warwick Davis delivers a stunning comic performance. Its not as good as the two shows mentioned, but I think its much better than After Life and Derek.

Louis Hessey-Antell

It’s a slightly odd one, because all of these criticism are kind of valid. However, everyone cries at the finale of the series! So something’s going on!

Steve Small

I'm a blubbering mess every time I watch this episode. It's the part where he lays down onto her lap and she strokes his hair that gets me. I'm even crying thinking about it to write this. What a poof 😂😂😂

Dave Houiellebecq

Really like your Ricky Gervais reactions. I loved afterlife and it’s cool to see you’re enjoying it.

Funny episode, some funny scenes. But I'm just struck by the feeling that Ricky thinks the character he plays is much more likable than he actually is. When in reality he's just a bit of a spoilt sociopath. Eg. his making loud noises to scare his wife in those old videos....it was funny seeing Ricky do it in real life, when the joke was how obnoxious and annoying he could get away with being before Robin Ince, or Karl, or whoever, would break. But seeing it here as an expression of what great fun they had together as a fictional couple...you just think she'd tell him to fuck off and to get on with hoovering the living room. The premise of the show sort of niggles too. Someone somewhere loses a loved one every hour of every day - it doesn't turn them into the character in this show. And everyone he's rude to is perfectly calibrated to be in the wrong, so he's justified in being rude. And everyone else is deeply touched by his story, moved to tears. There's a messianic thing about Derek and After Life that puts me off. Both the protagonists are these characters who sort of pretend to be flawed, but in reality they're flawless, and everyone who matters thinks they're wonderful. They're always in the right, their actions are always justified, they're always taking on the man and winning. It just gets predictable and leaves you feeling empty. And a bit worried for Ricky's real-life girlfriend to be honest. I think he's a brilliant comic mind, but someone needs to start pushing back at some of his ideas and saying 'no' every now and then.

Almost like t's been written specifically to tug at your heartstrings as much as possible.

Yeah because "poofs" cry. The 1970's called, they want their word back.

Well said. They are very contrived shows that lack naturalism. Then again, I've spent a large part of my life studying and critiquing film, so I've become extremely judgemental of the medium. The love I had for film and TV as a kid inspired me to study it. Unfortunately, this has ultimately jaded the experience. I often I wish I could return to that childlike wonder that allowed me to get excited about Star Wars or The A-Team, rather than subjecting everything to overanalyses.

Saul

I haven't seen it, well, I watched a few minutes of it ages ago and wrote it off on that basis...but I'd be well up for revisiting it on this channel and seeing what all the fuss is about. I must be different to other people here because I really like watching stuff I haven't seen before on this channel. I like watching my favourites too, don't get me wrong, but I also like discovering a new show along with Josh and other patreons here who haven't seen it before.

I’m one my third time watching this series and it never fails to make me laugh or bring a tear to my eye. So well written and directed

Saul

It's a natural consequence of ageing. Unfortunately. You lose that absurd intensity of emotion that used to burn away in the background. There's no way around it. I'm never going to feel the same way about a modern film as I did when I watched Last Of The Mohicans as a ten year old and spent the next six months imagining myself in various scenes in the movie, alongside whichever girl I fancied at that point. Maybe someday they'll be able to stimulate those parts of the brain in adults, and people our age will be able to feel like we did as kids. But until then it's just part of life. But we also gain things over time - the ability to appreciate things on much subtler levels than when we were younger. The ability to appreciate stuff we'd have just turned off as a teenager. The ability to see things in more shades than just black and white. You lose prejudices against certain genres, you start to see the beauty in things you used to think were inert and dull, or pretentious and confusing. And if you're creative you gain a confidence in yourself as a human being; you begin to accept that art isn't the sole preserve of mad geniuses and aliens, it's a human activity that anyone can do. I think there are some great things about getting a little older. I might not feel as raggedly passionate about new things, but I really do appreciate them more; I savour them. I'm still in my 30s, I'm not quite dead yet, and I am more interested in new film/tv/music/games than I ever have been.

@ Saul Till; You have the right approach and the proper attitude.

That bit where Brendan O'Carroll "sprained his ankle"... I think he landed on his head, and that's why we have Mrs. Brown. Think about it. It could be true.

Josip Buretic

I really did not know what to expect from this show but after watching the first two episodes I have to say I really enjoy watching the show!! And I love your reaction
