Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

This was great start to a new series. Karl was hilarious immediately with his first scene . It just felt like he was complaining about his actual friendship with Ricky lol. "This is where I work , this is how I look , he's me best mate .Why would I want to show that off on the Tele?" Lmao !! I really enjoyed this episode and look forward to the rest.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

As always I would love to read your comments below

The bloopers/outtakes are done in compilations after each season, all on YouTube, they’re amazing. I’ve seen David Earl who plays Kev do standup (as Brian Gittins), brilliant but surreal. You might recognise him as the obsessive fan in the pub from season 2 of Extras

Love this has won and now reacting, Such a heart warming show. Think it is some of Ricky's best acting

Anonymous

Great show and nice to see something so different on the channel. Although I would say Rickys other show After Life is better

Anonymous

I just don't believe Ricky in this roll, it just comes off as a character he plays to annoy Karl.

Sam Reeves

Glad you liked it man. Be warned it can be really heart-wrenching at times in between the humor.

Anonymous

Not sure if true but apparently when karl was given the role in this show he was just given a script and told to improvise and say whatever he would say in a normal situation word for word 😂

I so love Derek... as a past care worker with special needs adults and children and now caring for my elderly mum, I can't begin to tell you how well observed Derek is (in my opinion). I've always loved the emotional waves ricky puts in his work I know it splits opinion but maybe coz I'm a carer it always hits home. So happy you got to watch it Josh ! It only gets more funny (and emotional!)

Tony Smyth

If you haven't seen this already you should watch it now. https://youtu.be/oEZlpbfjWDQ Nobody can make such unfunny jokes as hysterical as Mr. Gittins,

This does have its moments and I am a big fan of Kerry Godliman as Hannah, but for me, overall, it just feels as if all the detail, restraint and subtlety of The Office and Extras where pathos is concerned has been replaced with far more deliberate and engineered "weepy" moments. David breaking down and begging for his job back, admitting he'd been complacent, such an earned moment. Andy and Maggie's fall out at the end of series 1 and their second fall out in the Christmas special... the apology scene on Big Brother.... so earned, so stark and genuinely touching because you don't quite expect it. Ricky *is* a good actor and does the emotive scenes well. I like Derek as a character and this has some very funny moments. I like the "kindness is magic" message and I think some scenes are great. Hannah headbutting the woman in the pub was really effective because it said all it needed to say without spelling it out.

Daryl

I'm glad you liked this first episode and are looking forward to more.

The problem I have with Derek as a show overall and the same issue unfortunately plagues Life on the Road and After Life too, is that Ricky has dispensed with supporting characters who indirectly imply their thoughts and feelings about the central protagonist and have their own fully fleshed out story and character arc, and relies instead on transparent tell-rather-than-show dialogue (particularly with the talking heads) so that the audience is under no misapprehension on who Derek is, who Hannah is, who Dougie and Kev are. The jokes may not have a laughter track telling you to laugh, but the drama does seem to signpost too heavily on how to feel and what to think which is odd given the reasons Gervais dislikes the laughter track so vehemently. You'd expect him to exercise more restraint and to dial it down rather than up. Indeed he did on The Office and Extras, but not here. And as with Life on the Road and After Life, there's a common denominator: Ricky writing solo, without Steve. I don't strongly dislike Derek (it is better than After Life for my money) and it has some solid moments but it's not what it could have been IMHO.

Ash Jeffries

Had to split my comment as it wouldn't post in one go: Lastly, and on a separate side note, I had forgotten that the incidental soundtrack featured Ludovico Einaudi. The piece used here I remember amongst many others quite clearly in Shane Meadows' astonishingly brilliant This is England TV series where Einaudi's music is used to great effect.

This show has its critics, because it isn't The Office. They kind of missed the point about how precious Derek's innocence and kindness is, and some read it as Ricky going for low-hanging fruit, by ridiculing those with learning difficulties. They couldn't be more wrong. This show will make you cry, and cry laughing. It has real heart, and the funniest bloopers ever. Hope you enjoy it Josh.

TheHigh

Lol. karl seems sooooooo outa place to me its perfect . very good stuff. emotional and funny. ricky da man.

I didn’t like Derek when it came out, (watching snippets here and there) but was a convert after watching Series 1 from the start during lockdown. It’s not an Oscar winning performance, he’s not that sort of actor, but I think he does an excellent job of portraying a character that’s the complete opposite of David Brent. I do think Karl is a much needed sane voice throughout that helps hold it all together, which is why I struggled and haven’t finished Series 2. But props to RG for writing and acting in an original and challenging comedy.

Jade Nepia

funny how Ricky talked shit about people like Catherine Tate doing character comedy and yet here he is pulling a face and walking funny. As funny as he can be he really seems like a bit of a dick

Anonymous

Derek and Afterlife are really some of Ricky’s best work in my opinion. Sure they aren’t full on comedy’s, but the funny moments are perfect, and they handle tough subjects sensitively while gut punching you

NEXUS

This is probably rickys best work along side Afterlife, they are not laugh out load every scene comedies ,in fact i don't see afterlife as a comedy outright. Ricks family members worked in care homes so this was the reason for this show Like John Sullivan who wrote only fools Ricky can have you laugh and then feel really emotional about a cast member and then pull you out of the deep moments into light with comedic scenes, not many writers can do this .Didn't like season 2 as much as it had to much of KEV. KARL IS KARL in this just with monk hair and platforms on for height. You should enjoy this series and get lots from it, hopefully Afterlife gets a look in later sometime as that's a good heartfelt series also.

I haven't seen these since their first airing and I am looking forward to rewatching with you. I recall this series really catching me emotionally. It did again tonight. Thanks Josh 😁

Glad you enjoyed it

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks bud, I do want to check out After life at some point too, so hopefully it wins on a poll sometime soon.

AfterWorkReactions

That is awesome. My mom was a caretaker for many years and I totally agree. They captured that very well. I am so excited to finally check out this show! Take care have a great week!

AfterWorkReactions

Awesome bud, I have been waiting to watch this show since I started watching UK comedy. I am excited to see Karl and Ricky again.

James Aston

Hate to be negative because I do like Gervais a lot but I don't think he's a great actor unless he's doing Brent. Derek is just him with a brain injury, the same as Andy was just him with the sense of humour turned down. And having Kerry Anne Godliman going "he's funny" is a really cheap way of getting the audience to think he's funny even though he isn't. I'll give it a chance over the next few weeks for Karl, but this first episode doesn't give me a lot of hope.

Daniel

Personally I think Derek is Ricky’s best work, his acting is on point, I know people may disagree but Gervais is so clever at making characters that are cringeworthy of hard to even like but they all have their moment of redemption that ends up hitting you in the heart, Brent at the Christmas party with the fuck off to Chris finch and his date asking for him to call her from the cab, to Andy millman apologising thru big brother for being a dick and afterlife I won’t give anything away. Derek is different tho i believe, heartwarming drama comedy at its finest.

This was the pilot episode that was filmed around a year before the 1st series proper, although it has the same feel to the other episodes the show properly comes alive from the next ep

Anonymous

Yeah I totally agree! As much as I think he is fantastically funny, talented and intelligent he seems really up himself and self centred.

James Aston

It's because Steve isn't writing with him. I haven't seen Afterlife to be fair, and have heard good things about that, but all the subtlety seems to have been removed from his writing in recent years from what I've seen. It was evident in the Brent movie too.

David Williams

This pretty much shows what you're going to get with this show. I love this show, for the drama as much as the comedy. He mentioned kindness in this and that's the heart of the show, these characters are my super heroes.

BigChanChan

I honestly didn't think I'd like it but really enjoyed it and I'm surprised Ricky's character comes in for criticism... He plays it sympathetically in my opinion and portrays a guy with learning difficulties in a positive manner. Some of his mannerisms and gestures are absolutely spot on too.

Saul

I go back and forth on this show. It's often manipulative and saccharine, and makes out like Derek's some kind of modern saint. Hearing everyone talk about how great he is makes me instinctively cringe. Ditto the nurse character, who might as well be Jesus she's so flawless. And yet...there are moments in it that are so painfully beautiful they cut straight into me like a razor - right into me, no resistance, straight through all the tissue and bone. When Gervais gets the balance right he can come up with scenes that leave me an emotional wreck. It's a long time since I watched it but there's one scene in particular that just broke me in half. I was holding back tears. There's something about male vulnerability that really affects me, especially blokes trying to hold it together in the face of great trauma or sadness. We keep so much shit in, we're taught it's the only way to be a real man. So we all instinctively understand what we're looking at when we see a guy suppressing his pain. Apologies for getting deep. I'll rewatch the show here, even though I think it's flawed it has moments of brilliance. And it's a lot funnier than this episode suggests.

Mick Mills

I never knew that. I watched it as a series, didn't know this was a pilot. It is sad and funny in equal measures. Like the finale of Extras, it mixes that 'sad cry' with 'laugh cry'.

I've seen afterlife but never Derek. Going off this episode they seem on par to me. Definitely the same kind of writing and production so I think anyone would enjoy both if they liked the other. So glad to see something else with Karl in though. As soon as you see his round head you just start smirking. He doesn't even have to say anything 🤣😂

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks bud. The first episode had some sad moments, but they did a good job in the episode I enjoyed it a whole lot!

Is a show i had never seen, so am watching it along with Josh for the first time. Loved Office and S1 of Afterlife, but Derek is definitely not what i was expecting! Was disappointed when i saw it won the poll, but was pleasantly surprised and will keep going.

SynphamyMusic

So glad you're doing Derek. I think this is some of Gervais' best work, the writing is fantastic, they pepper it with these really beautiful moments that treat the elderly with so much dignity and respect. And as you say, Gervais created such a good character as Derek, that scene in the pub where he's saying "what did i ever do to them?"... In Gervais' words "I think Derek is all of us before the weight of the world makes us cynical and we care about what other people think", just no comprehension of evil, not corrupted by social pressures or vanity. There's just so much to love about this show.

AfterWorkReactions

Awesome bud hope you enjoy this one then! Karl is hilarious man I have enjoyed everything I have seen him in so far.

AfterWorkReactions

Awesome man thanks for the info. I am excited to finally check this show out. It has been something I want to check out for a while.

Anonymous

Man if you think this is sad, wait until you watch afterlife 😂

Michael Leighton's Karl Pilkington Animations

I agree with your comments about Ricky's solo projects. Steve seems to rein Ricky in just the right amount, whereas Derek and After Life seem clumsy, lacking the nuance and depth that Steve brings. I find Derek and AL saccharine and Einaudi's music just amplifies it.

Anonymous

That’s the genius of Ricky gervais. He can make you laugh and make you cry in a half hour episode. Afterlife has its funny moments but is really quite moving at times. Maybe that’s why it won so many awards

AfterWorkReactions

Yes for sure this episode did have its sad moments I enjoyed it alot though. I do want to check out Afterlife soon hopefully it wins a poll =]
