Mr K

Love this episode and series. 🙂

slashdisco

Haven't watched your reaction yet, Josh, but I'm prepared to cut you some slack for this one, because (i) the change of time period/characters is jarring at first, and (ii) this first episode happens to be the heaviest in terms of UK-centric references, being a parody of the current British political process. The other episodes of this series are much more relatable to foreign audiences... though, to be honest, you're such an honorary Brit that I expect you to enjoy this one too! The main takeaway from this episode is that it finally reveals a key trend stretching from the first to the fourth series: as the series progress, "Blackadder" becomes less influential/aristocratic, but more intelligent. He starts of as a stupid prince (1), then a selfish lord (2), then a scheming butler (3)... you'll have to wait and see what he becomes in s4!

My fav Blackadder series

A few details on this one: the newscaster in this was a real newscaster, and you'll often find joke candidates at elections in the UK. Lord Buckethead who stood against Theresa May stands out as a recent one! The whole thing was played out like a real election broadcast. Also, not sure if you've clocked this, but the Prince is played by Hugh Laurie who played House.

Kieran B

No spoilers but you’ll see ‘Sir Talbot Buxomly’ again in Only Fools and Red Dwarf, tricky to recognise him in this though.

Great reaction Josh! I think I prefer series 3 to series 2 on balance and I'd say the next episode, Ink and Incapability is my favourite episode of the 3rd series and better than any Blackadder 2 episode too. Only Blackadder Goes Forth beats it IMHO. I am looking forward to your seeing it next week! Did you recognise Hugh Laurie as George here? You might know him better (or at least recognise him) as Dr. Gregory House of House M.D. Much younger here of course and made up for the character, not to mention his posh English accent which is fairly close to how Laurie actually speaks albeit slightly exaggerated. You might be aware that Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are/were good friends and had their own show (A Bit of Fry and Laurie) as well as starring together in the ITV adaptation of PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster. You show an active interest in our TV and comic actors so you may be fully aware but it always surprises me the number of Americans who aren't aware that Hugh Laurie is English and believe House is played by an American actor! :-D

Yes, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) was a playboy and extravagant spender who racked up large gambling debts. He’s arguably the worst monarch in modern British history.

Charlie

Possibly my favourite series of Blackadder. Hugh Laurie as Prince George absolutely steals the whole series. Or perhaps I just personally identify with his propensity to lose all his socks. This episode aired on election night 1997, which was when I first saw it as a child.

This is a tough first episode, even though it's excellent, because of the amount of background knowledge of the British political system it demands of you. There really is a lot of it, a lot of references to particular tropes, like the joke-party in the rotten borough scene that only exists to propose 'zany' policy ideas(we have a long-running party in Britain called The Monster Raving Loony Party, who are just as tiresome and unfunny as their name suggests - their latest policy suggestion was that the government should introduce a 99 pence coin, so that we don't have so much change in our pockets. Which is quite funny if you're in the pub and you suggest it to your mates, but not so funny if you wheel it out as a joke policy in an election. Opinions on the Monster Raving Loon Party among the public are split between those who believe they are a healthy manifestation of democracy in action, but also annoying cunts...and those who believe they are just annoying cunts full stop). This is my favourite season of Blackadder - season two lacks the brilliant Hugh Laurie as the prince regent, also Blackadder is maybe too powerful and wealthy for it to have much sting when things are looking bleak, while the fourth one...I don't know, it just feels like the weakest for some indefinable reason. But the third season suffers none of those flaws. It's just this is a very dense first episode. Other episodes assume background knowledge, of English literature, and of history, but they're not as demanding. I think it'll be a bit easier to navigate over the next few episodes. I think this season has a bit more bite too, so maybe you'll find it funnier too Josh. Don't really mind though, keep up the good work mate.

The least funny of the series (this episode) but that's just my opinion. Gets far funnier from now on...

"Old boy who was the drunk guy last season who is the prince" is Hugh Laurie, who plays Dr. House in House MD in the US in case you didn't know :D he was part of a double act with Stephen Fry for many years and he's one of the best things about Black adder. God this season has so many classic eps. I love this episode but compared to some of the eps to come its probably in the weaker few of the season.

9:43 Dr House, everybody!

It's very hard to pick a favourite Blackadder series, there may have been a time where I said the second (probably when I first rewatched it as an adult) but now looking back, the lack of Hugh Laurie really sets it back for me. So I guess it comes down to 3 or 4, but like I say it's pretty hard to choose! I think out of all of them "Goes Forth" has the best recurring cast, but "The Third" has what is probably my favourite episode "Ink & Incapability", which I'm looking forward to seeing on here. Also, if you see this comment Josh, keep in mind there are a few one-off specials that you should watch as well, for example; 'Blackadder's Christmas Carol'. Not sure how many specials there are but it should be easy enough to find them.

Happy birthday to Tay and Pugs

slashdisco

Hahah you got me at first... *calming down*. Well said!

David Lyons

Apologies for being pedantic, but each series isn't supposed to be set in a different timeline, the different Blackadders are intended to be family descendants/ancestors. (This is demonstrated in the Christmas special.) Whether this applies to all cast members (is Prince Ludwig the ancestor of Prince George?), that's up to you to decide!

Danny

Pitt The Younger, by the way, in real life was actually 24 when he became prime minister. It's just exaggerated again for comedy. The youngest prime minister in British history though. But that's ancient compared to past Kings and Queens. Queen Mary was a few days old when she became Queen and Henry VI was 9 months old. That's when a Regent takes over as a placeholder of sorts till the King or Queen is ready, like Prince George. He was Regent when his father King George III (Mad King George) went loony, but then took over as proper King when he died. So this is set in that Recency period

1987! Also the "Go back to your kitchen sink you see and prepare for government" is a parody of Neil Kinnock saying "Go back to your constituency and prepare for government" before losing to Thatcher.

I love this episode - this whole series is gold. Watch out for Rimmer turning up as a French revolutionary in one of the episodes. The election scene is a pastiche of our general election TV coverage. I always found it a bit jarring to have a TV bit in regency period Britain but you can see he's talking to an open window, which I reckon they just put in there to smooth it out. Oh, Mrs Miggins - the actress is actually Rowan's wife. What else? Oh, there's an episode that's probably not on your list that I just remembered. Around Christmas 1999 they released a millenium special. I remember watching it when it aired. It was super disappointing and fan-servicey but it might be worth a watch. I watched it recently. Very unfunny, even back then when I was 13. I would recommend you watch it only after you watch season 1, only if you care enough after season 1 to watch something less funny than season 1.

Danny

"The millennium special" is Blackadder Back and Forth, it's a bit daft but it's alright few funny bits. It doesn't have a laughter track on it like the series, so felt weird. It's only about half hour but close as we get to a Blackadder movie.

Here is a link where you can read about George IV and his ridiculous spending habits.. hope it answers your question about his diligence with money :D https://lucyworsley.com/the-naughty-prince-regent-read-all-about-him-in-my-article-in-todays-sunday-express/

Michael

Now we get to see Hugh Laurie a lot more, i think american's know him better as mr House? Or Dr House? idk

Michael

Can someone give me a little history on George IV, is he the one who lost the american colonies? or was that his father? I know one of them was responsible for taxing the americans on the tea and being a whacko

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks bud, I have been hearing the third season is awesome so I am looking forward to it! I actually haven't watched the show House but the actor does look familiar so I may have seen him in something else. I totally agree, although it does always surprise me if you see an actor no in character and see they have a different accent lol.

Michael

Ahh, i think the prince regent is the son of King George III, 'the mad king' He heavily taxed the americans and caused the american war of independence, apparently he went mad later on in life, and i think his son (seen in this episode) was prince regent ( acting as head of state during his fathers incapaciation?) until he was crowned king in early 1800s. His spending habits were pretty bad i think.

I should also add that Window Tax was a real tax in the UK at that time! You'll often see 18th and 19th-century buildings in the UK with windows bricked up because of this. Swamp duty was, in fact, the only joke tax.

Tbh i found this below my expectations after the the last episodes of the previous season. Essentially the historical period and perhaps the scenarios might have changed but it appears as though the characters haven't.
