Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

This episode had a different tone maybe its that the American was the biggest dick and that role is usually reserved for Basil. I remember the episode when the customer kept complaining about not getting his drink and Basil grab him by the collar and pulled him into the next room. I half expected something similar to that to happen in this episode with the American lol. When he took the salad and read a letter I was like Basil wtf bud why why . I thought the American guy was going to deck him. The best part was Basil leaving and coming back as a customer and listing off his expectations as a such, that was gold lol.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

This was my favourite as a child :D

Who wants a Waldorf Salad? Apple, walnut, grapes, celery with a special mayo sauce....and then throw it in the bin!

Bruce Boa (the American) is actually Canadian and was in the Empire Strikes Back.

I guess they wanted to contrast someone who fanatically demanded nothing but the very best customer service, with someone that provides nothing but the very worst. An act that Gordon Ramsey has been mimicking his whole career. 😃 Usually Basil blames and hits everyone else, so guess it was good that they had the evening off and his character was made to face up to his shortcomings with no one else to blame, except for his wife, the other guests and his imaginary chef that is.

I had never noticed this before while watching this episode, but the Hamiltons took a very silly route from London to Torquay. I'd be angry too if I had gone on the M5, should've taken the M3 out of London and then the A303. I wonder if this was deliberate by John Cleese, a little joke where Mr. Hamilton was angry over something that was his own fault. I think this is one of the few times when Basil was sort of right, even if he handled the situation as badly as he usually does. Even the most patient of people would've wanted to clap Mr. Hamilton after enduring that.

Thanks for that bud, I can for sure see that. We are close to a big city and I totally get mad if I go on the wrong exit or highway because it takes forever to get home lol

I've seen this episode probably more than any other. I love the excuses and rants in this one. It still always has me on edge when Mr Hamilton is getting angry about the grapefruit and waldorf salad and he's flailing the knife around, I half expect him to go at Basil with it

Mr K

This one is always painful to watch, for me. 😂

Nothing wrong with liking the 'bad guy'. I quite like Walter White in Breaking Bad 😂

I agree with your points about this episode. This is one of my least favourite, mainly because the American guy just jars with the normal style of Fawlty Towers humour. And the reasons you gave are pretty accurate: he's too serious for one thing, too intense and humourless and just too convincingly cunty. Maybe it was meant to be a critique of 'Americans abroad', the idea that they are arrogant and presumptuous and think the world revolves around them, but if it was meant to be satire of American tourist behaviour it didn't quite land. I think the guy's performance was just...off. It was like he was in Taxi Driver or something, there was absolutely nothing comedic about it at all. Having said that, as with all FT episodes it still had some brilliant moments. Any time Basil has to deal with 'common people' sparks fly, and the further he's pushed the better. 'There's not much more I can do for people like you short of putting straw in the room' - :) it takes so little for that thin veneer of cordiality to slip and for his seething hatred of everyone and everything to rise to the surface.

I'd agree with some others on this being the weakest episode. The 11 others I can happily choose to re-watch, whilst this one just doesn't speak to me.

they were trying something with this epsiode i think and it went too far too fast like parodying themselves still always enjoy the scenarios and acting

Andy Farmer

Bruce Boa who played the American was also in The Empire Strikes Back and in Full Metal Jacket

Dean

I had a similar viewing experience as you, Josh. I found the guest obnoxious. Obviously, he was there as a structural device to expose the pitiful nature of the British service industry in that era, but demanding the kitchen stay open and splashing the cash around was just arrogant. Still plenty of laughs though. I think the episode was also a commentary on the differences between British and American concepts of "good service". The British attached to a traditional idea of propriety and stale routine. The American more inclined to use money and aggressive demands to get his way.

I agree with you about this episode. The American visitor is too OTT, completely unreasonable, so it gets a bit annoying. I do find it funny when Basil comes back and asks for breakfast in bed with a waldorf salad.

Completely agree with your summing up on this one Josh. This was always m least favourite episode. Whenever I've done run throughs of the series in recent times, I usually skip this episode.
