So I've spent quite a lot of time tweaking the very fine details on the skin.

I've added subsurface scattering, so that when light shines on the skin, instead of reflecting straight off, it's absorbed into the skin and scatters the light through the model. An example of this is on thin parts like the ears or tip of the nose, if the light behind the model is bright enough you can see the ears glow a little with the light coming through, like real life.

I've created new bump maps for pores, freckles, moles, wrinkles etc.

I've added a slight metallic flake to the surface to strengthen the effect of the pores and still have a nice glossy, sweaty look.

I've also added a separate 3d mesh for the nipples. In the past, the nipples have always been just a morph of the original model where the nipples have been pushed out. Now I'm using a geograft that is a high res model of a nipple attached to the model itself.

All in all, I'm quite happy with how it turned out and I think I'll continue on from here using my new skin shader :)

Thank you all!

Brilliant and impressive work my friend :) i just hope all your characters won’t look too different, hopefully I won’t be able to tell. Great attention to detail

Thanks buddy! No, I'll do my best to keep the characters how they are but just apply the new skin to their existing textures, so should be all good :)

Thank you for the sample comparison. I agree with you that the new style looks better. You have every right to be happy with this.
