About the intro, a lot of it was different yeah so your not crazy lol, Vegeta was not in the first op of DBZ. None of the DBZ movies are cannon but this movie did have a sequel in the actual anime ep 108 to 117 filler arc called the Garlic Jr saga. It was infamous for being the worst part of the whole show since it references this movie and if you hadn't seen it you would be lost. It also ruins the pacing of the show in a sense. But yeah none of the movies are cannon since they are never referenced and are impossible to connect to the actual story of DBZ. You'll notice as you watch more of them. This is actually the first time I am watching the movies so it was fun watching it along with you.

If this was canon it would've taken place before Raditz showed up. But since its not canon, then you guys don't have to worry about timeline placement 👍🏾

Dipping your toes into movie territory. Nice. It's been a long time since I watched Dead Zone. And yes, the filler arc after Namek is a direct sequel to this. The filler arc is not really looked upon fondly among the fanbase, but at least it's relatively short. This movie took place before ep1 of DBZ. I don't even know if Gohan was 4 yet. Just so you know though, none of the original 13 movies are cannon, and most of them are impossible to put on the timeline. You'll know why as you go through them. As of right now, you can watch up to Movie 5, but that one is not on Funimation so you'll have to look elsewhere.

So in terms of being canon...no it is not. In terms of timeline...consider this at the same time or just before Raditz turns up. You should consider all the movies in an alternate timeline to the canon timeline. In the canon timeline, Bulma, Roshi and Krillin all meet Gohan for the very first time when he takes him to Roshi's island for their reunion right before Raditz. They are all shocked to see Goku has a son. Here however they seem to already be aware of Gohan and/or are not as shocked to find out about him. Also think that if they find out about him in this movie then it makes the series wrong, and if they already know him here it means that the only time this fight could happen is in between Goku arriving and Raditz getting to Roshi's Island. Either way the times do not match up and that is why it is best to only consider the canon timeline here for powers that the characters have and how strong they are.

Rule of thumb for the Dragonball Z movies: They are almost NEVER canon. Tree of Might, for example, takes place where all the Z Warriors are alive as if this were pre Saiyan Saga, and yet Goku has already been trained under King Kai and has his iconic techniques. That's pretty much the norm. They happen in snapshots of time where the heroes were already in the midst of greater conflicts, or certain characters were dead. Even Dead Zone, taking place before between Z and OG, being among the more plausible of the films... is still impossible, because in it Goku contacts Roshi and the others who in Z he hadn't seen since the Tournament, and Krillin seems unsurprised of Gohan's existence, when like everyone else it was a shock for him when Goku arrived with a son in tow. "History of Trunks" and "Bardock, The Father of Goku" are really the only ones that are even slightly canon, and Bardock is only canon because Toriyama liked the story they made and the character they created for the movie. And until "Battle of Gods" this is all the DBZ movies ever were. Non-canon, forty-minute boom-fests with extremely little characte or storyr. Just a spree, a stag-reel of better animated DBZ action that is usually incredibly formulaic to the point of hilarity. Team Four Star even pointed out the consistent trope of the big-bad of most movies usually having minions to serve as mid-bosses that fit the "Feminine one/Big Stupid one/ Weird one" archetypes. It's really just meant to be fun, which isn't to say some of the movies didn't influence things that WOULD be made canon later.

All the films are noncanon aside from History of Trunks. The Bardock movie was canon until it was retconned in the 3rd Super film. Then there is one final special that is still ambigously canon, "Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!", which is an anniversary special featuring a character from that special who is referenced in the Super films which are all canon but, they are never brought up in the Super anime which has arcs that retell the first 2 films. It's a bit confusing because either they are referring to the character from that special or they alluding to a brand new character we haven't seen yet, which is potentially exciting. In terms of species identification, aside from Humans, Saiyans, and Namekians. Frieza's race has no official name yet but fans and video games have called them Frieza Clan. the Frost Demons, or even rarer the Arcosians. Garlic Jr. and his henchman are referred to as Makyans from the planet Makyo Star.
