The complexity of emotions is something I think Reki really understands. Not everything is black and white. Kirito’s feelings towards the nervegear and Suguha’s feelings towards Kirito are really good examples. I think too many people are used to things being a certain way (many times in shonen) where things are straightforward in a character’s line of thinking. That isn’t bad perse but that does do a disservice so stories like these where characters struggle with waves of different emotions is much deeper than surface level. Especially when they use certain aspects of that to hate on a series. Adding to that, when people say that Reki is a bad writer, it always comes from people who don’t know the first thing about writing. Not only that, but they usually never read the source material either. They are just parroting the usual misinformation their favorite anime youtuber is parroting. As for how Suguha is feeling, I do think that she’s actually in love with him but that comes, like you said, from a state of confusion. To her it was less like a family member turning into a slightly more distant family member, but more like a family member turning into a stranger who she had a strong bond with. Her need to take care of him only made this confusion worse and her fear of possibly losing him at any time just added to that. She even mentions early on that they don’t look alike which only separates the two of them further in her mind. The fact that she is young and had never experience romance before really was that last nail in the coffin. This is also where you see Suguha being one of the few people he’s properly opened up to. This becomes important later in Alicization, but apart from Asuna, he’s never really shown how he truly feels to someone else. He even mentions he was trying to hide it from her. Later Sinon is added to that list then finally Eugeo. I do agree that Suguha and Asuna don’t really have many interactions with one another but that really comes down to the fact that volumes 1-18 are mostly focused on Kirito. For as much as they change perspectives, it still doesn’t allow for full freedom for the other characters to interact without Kirito for large parts of the series. Those interactions do happen, but we are not shown those interactions since Kirito is almost never a part of them. Things like this change starting with Moon Cradle where Kirito isn’t even the main character anymore. Unital Ring makes him MC again but the focus on other characters is more predominant now that Kirito has “finished” his major character growth. There’re also more scenes in the school in this arc which is pretty fun too. UR really reminds me more of how Accel World is written. Hopefully you get to those novels soon but you still got quite a journey ahead of you. At least Fairy Dance isn’t too long of an arc, although it does take place over two volumes. Phantom bullet on the other hand is also two volumes but is a bit longer. Then you have Mother’s Rosario with a single short volume, then a short story collection, then you finally get to the Alicization arc, a whole ten volume long arc. At least there are a few volumes in there that are short.

I think one thing that should also be known in the context of Sugu's feelings is that the stigma around getting together with a cousin doesn't seem to be as strong in Japan (or at least in Japan as anime portrays it). So, there isn’t that much of a social pressure stopping her from feeling that way, it’s mainly just the issue that Kazuto already has someone he loves and that she doesn’t want to get in the way because she wants him to be happy. Like in many countries you can legally marry your cousin in Japan. Furthermore, Japan has a recent (in historical terms) history of Cousin marriages being pretty normal. Which is likely why the whole cousin as possible love interest is something that comes up in anime now and then even without it being seen as weird in the anime. E.g., You just watched the first episode of Grand Blue and between all the hilarious stuff there was also the topic of how cute and beautiful Chisa and Nanaka have become and how Iori is lucky to be able to live with such beautiful cousins. It’s not a big deal but it might seem kind of a weird to talk like that about cousins, but if you consider them as technically possible targets of (romantic) affection then it makes a bit more sense.
