Such a great episode for S5 and awesome focus on Wes' character and growth. And Alexis Denisof is such an incredible actor to go from badass to clumsy mess to scary/threatening to tragic melancholy...all in the span of one episode. We have definitely been seeing little crumbs of Wes' backstory with his father throughout the entire series. The first time we learn of his abusive father was in S1 with the possessed child that taunted him about not being good enough for his father, being locked under the stairs for hours. Then in S2, in the Untouched episode, Wes was the one that figured out that the telekinetic girl had been abused by her father, cause he recognized the signs of trauma. Also in S2, before going to Pylea we see him call his dad to tell him the news that he was made leader of the group. But even though we never heard his fathers voice or what he said, based on Wes' replies, we could tell how easily his father breaks down his spirit and confidence. Then in S3, when Fred was leaving with her parents, Wes mindlessly keeps talking to the others about how her parents were so loving and didn't begrudge her and grind her down, obviously referencing his own abusive childhood...so yea, there have been SIGNS
