The next episode is one of my favorites of the season and it's in my top 15 of the GoT universe.

Oh God next episode 😭 , but this episode is soooo important, we see the family dynamic a bit with Aegon , Aemond & a bit of Helena along with Alicent and Otto , the actors are for sure killing it 🔥

I have to say, I don't really know what to make of Alicent. Has Alicent really only now understood, that she is just a pawn in Otto's plan? Not when he kept sending her to the king after the queen's death? Not when he didn't give a damn about her feelings? Not when he kept trying to convince her, that Aegon was the king's heir, even though he himself had previously proposed Rhaenyra? And she really didn't know that Otto and the entire council planned to put Aegon on the throne as soon as Viserys died? Then why did she torment Rhaenyra for over 10 years and try to remove her from her position? Why did she cover up for a murderer so she could bring her father back to King's Landing? I think this episode portrays Alicent as incredibly naive, if not almost stupid. I have lost all respect for her. It's true, she finally stood up to Otto. But in the end she still does exactly what he always wanted. She can't really believe that Viserys changed his mind at the last moment and in a complete state of delirium! He has hardly shown any interest in Aegon. Viserys has stood by Rhaenyra for years, no matter what she did. It's always the same with Alicent. She tells herself that she is doing the "right thing", that she is playing by the rules. But she plays the game just like everyone else. She and Otto are the ultimate hypocrites. Daemon, at least, owns up to what he is. He does what he does simply because he wants to. His family has taken the throne and therefore it belongs to them, it's as simple as that.

Namikaza

Little fun fact. In this episode, Aemond and Crispin disguise themselves as the people they are obsessed with. Look at Daemon and Rhaenyra in episode 4. I read that somewhere and find it hilarious.

Love your reaction!) yes actually Rhaenys dragon Meleys also known as the Red Queen and the fastest dragon) she looks stunning)

Namikaza

Not the biggest fan of the scene with Rhaenys. She kills hundreds of peasants but spares the traitors? Really?

I think you have the best understanding of the characters that I've seen in any reaction. Especially Alicent who I believe is really misunderstood by the fandom at large. She's very complex and in conflict with herself and I think this episode showed that the clearest with her duty to her family against her love for Rhaenyra. This show has its flaws but I think nearly every character is well drawn and I'm glad to see a reactor that really appreciates that.

Agreed. It wasn’t needed. Seemed to be there for the shock value. Her flying away would have achieved the same story goals: Rhaenyra will soon find out what has happened. But without us seeing Rhaenys kill a bunch of innocents and then pass on ending an inevitable war before it begins.

Those are not great houses in the throne room with Otto. They are minor lords close to Kingslanding, doing minor official jobs. The lady from house Fell is from Felwood in the Stormlands. The bald man is house Caswell. He is lord of Bitterbridge in the Reach. They are all close to Kingslanding.

I had forgotten how much I hate that foot fetish scene

Can’t wait for you to watch the finale; It’s my favorite episode!! P.S. That dragon is Meleys Aka the Red Queen

Yeah, I think Sofie was pretty spot one when she said that Alicent heard what she wanted to hear the night Viserys died so she could justify the actions that the Greens were going to take anyway. Earlier in the season she told Aegon his "very life will be forfeit" if Rhaenyra took the crown when even Aegon said he didn't want to take his half sister's birthright.

So I think there are multiple important reasons that she spares the traitors. For one, I don't know if Rhaenys views this as her fight yet. Her family has not really officially declared their side and Rhaenys is not feeling all the love for Rhaenyra right now (given her suspicions about what happened with her son). Secondly, it is considered a BIG deal to be considered a "kinslayer." that is a huge stain on a person in this world. Thirdly. if Rhenys killed them - them she would be blamed for the start of the war. She would have made the first move/drawn the first blood - rather than the greens being blamed. Then, there is also prob some sympathy for Alicent thrown in there for multiple reasons (both of them bound by duty). Also, Alicent, due to her love for her son, standing in front of him to shield him --- leading Rhaenys to relate to her.

Also, I don't think that the nobles care too much about the peasants in their game of thrones. Just a causality of war.

In spite of Black running through my blood...The coronation was still cool I'm not gonna lie, the way it was shot was absolutely stunning and you still gotta admire a Targaryen heir being officially correlated no matter what- and I find myself being less harsh on Alicent than most...You gotta feel for the fact that if you go back for enough she really never asked for any of this. Even if in all cases as you pointed out she makes the worst of her bad situation and falls prey to furthering the patriarchal structures that put her in her unfair circumstances....Now for more harsh judgment the fact that she prones purity and moral virtue demonizing Rhanyra etc but then is perfectly willing to let Larrys jerk off to her feet and god knows what else as long as it benefits her really shows the hypocrisy

Poison Ivy

I really don't like the reasoning that it's "not her fight yet." Her granddaughters are the future wifes to Jace and Luke, who are both in direct crossfire due to being heir to the throne and heir to Driftmark. That makes Baela and Rhaena also targets and puts them in danger, which should be reason enough for Rhaenys to "make it her fight." If she killed the Greens, there would be no more war because the biggest instigators are Alicent and Otto and without them the war wouldn't have even happened. I don't know what route the show will take from season 2 onwards, but in the book more than half of the realm fought for Rhaenyra. The point about being a kinslayer, I do agree with. All in all, that scene was really just unnecessary lol

One cool little thing about this episode is that the trumpet music played just before Aegon enters the coronation is the same as the score we hear for King Robert's entrance to Winterfell in S1 E1 and Jon and Dany's ride through the North at the start of S8 E1. It means that theme originally created by the show's composer is now an in-universe piece of music.

N

I rarely agree with what she does but man Alicent is such a good character

miah.sun

I agree that it was unnecessary. It didn't happen in the source material. Just trying to justify it for myself, so I can like it better. Do you think if Rhaenys killed them, drew the first blood and slaughtered them - it would draw more support for the greens rather than half the realm going toward Rhaenyra as they did? The Greens would still have Daeron (maybe?) and Helaena and Aegon's children whom they could rally behind as the next heir.

2023-07-25 03:18:30 Upon first watch of this episode, I don’t think that a lot of people realized that the Coronation was taking place in the Dragon Pit. That was why Rhaenys smiled when she realized where the crowd was headed. It was really the only place large enough in King’s Landing for them to bring in the crowd that they wanted to have witness the event. I think they could have made that clear when they had Alicent describing the details of the coronation to her father. But maybe they thought that would give away what Rhaenys was going to do too soon. You elaborated on many of the important moments in this episode IMO. I totally concur that Larys was enjoying his ability to abase the queen as much as anything in “that” scene with her. It’s all about his power over her. And I also agree that Rhaenys line about Alicent wanting to make a window in her prison was an epic line. Alicent can’t see anything beyond her role as trying to influence the men in her life to do what she sees as right, rather than consider how she could wield her own power. Yes, the actor who plays Aegon was wonderful in this episode. I am looking forward to seeing more of him in Season Two. And I’m also looking forward to your reaction to the final episode of this season!
