Bran becoming King makes 10000% complete sense as a book reader, the show just didn't do his character justice. The books BEGIN from Bran's perspective, with his dreams of a boy who may one day become a king. I don't fault people who only watched the show for not understanding it, and I don't think they will ever understand it if they never read the books. The blame is not on them, the blame is on the showrunners for rushing his character in the show and not doing show Bran justice to his book character. It's unfortunate that the showrunners dropped the ball on this, but Bran becoming king is 1000% the correct, most logical move. Bran didn't fool anyone, the show just never truly explains what the three eyed raven actually is. The three eyed raven sees both the past AND the future without the ability to change either. Bran knew that he HAD to become king in order for things to end in true peace. Thats why he said Why do you think I came all the way here?. He came all the way there because he knew he HAD to, not because he necessarily wanted to. I would love to have the ability to fully explain everything to you because it all actually makes complete sense, but I simply can't do that in a single comment so I'll just end it here. Regardless, it has been a blast watching you go through this journey. You have had by far the most level-headed understanding of this show! It just sucks that Bran becoming king doesn't make any sense to people who only watched the show. Looking forward to you watching House of the Dragon!

Lucas

It's super emotional to witness the end of yet another journey knowing how long and tumultuous the long journey lol through thick and thin...

Lucas

And so one of the greatest shows ever made for TV ended in perplexity and doubtfulness....and not in joy or sadness. But before addressing anything else there is a degree of resolve and acceptance that is felt by me....It reminds me of what Jon said to Sansa back in Season 6 before attacking the Boltons..'No it's not enough! It's what we have' lmao For good or ill I have accepted this is the ending we got...Could it have been improved- absolutely, could it have been worse, yes absolutely! the cinematography, production, costume absolutely marvelous, every frame in the first half of this ep is like a painting......There is just a gap which everyone can feel between what the show/its characters/ the writing/ the storytelling was when we began this journey, and what it became as we ended it here...Part of it I talked about i trying to subvert expectation- it's telling us that ultimately all of the blood-rights, prophesies, foretelling and legends etc mean absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things and none of it matters in the end. And I absolutely agree with you the choosing of Bran is both hilarious and nonsensical- but really problematic and should have made them scratch their heads. they traded a 'tyrant' for a new ruler who had full knowledge of every event but decided it was worthwhile to let hundreds of thousands of people die for him to end up where he is. The wheel is NOT broken lmao Daenerys what can you say- from breaker of chains to straight up Hitler in 3 eps... and you have to really backtrack and justify how this was foretold by things that were nowhere near as outrageous.Again it's not what happened, it's the way they did it... Aegon Targaryen's name means absolutely nothing-really just backtracking to where he started after his whole journey. I agree good for him but from a writing perspective still hurts me.

Lucas

So what you're explaining about Bran really gives me same vibes as Dune series about viewing the future...Lol...You knew you had to leave thousands of people to die and burn and suffer...to bring about true peace- end of the day you still allowed all of it to happen. You foretell it's the best outcome, well philosophically it's also the outcome that you are manifesting by not saying anything and think it is the best. It's not about what he 'wants', it's the utter lack of humanity involved to say everything was good and this is where everyone needed to be all along for me to manifest my plan-It was always better for everyone for those people to die and for me to be King in order to achieve what I know to be the perfect future(The Golden Path in Dune)- maybe not good for those women and children burned alive that could have been spared or that you had a duty to try and prevent from dying just from a basic moral perspective, in which case what Daenerys did is just as much his fault for not warning and especially setting certain events in motion that would lead where it is...IT'S ALL JUST AS CONCERNING

Alexis Cardarella

This is my third time rewatching the last season. My main gripe, maybe my only gripe at this point.. is how rushed the last few episodes were, and how that for me affects the believability of Dany willingly slaughtering king's landing after they surrendered. I still find it.. hard to truly believe that that would happen at that point in time. Danny descending into madness- I can absolutely believe it, the trauma and grief she endured.. the isolation, rejection.. I just wish the decent into have taken more than a few episodes. I LOVED watching this with you. I LOVED your analysis. And I love that you still have such a respect for the show despite you own gripes. ..There's some background info on the creators and why the season was short that I know will disappoint you, but I still think your respect for the show itself is unwavering. I can't wait for House of the Dragon, and again, I hope you start The Expanse soon, a show on par with the world building and incredible characters of this one that I know you'll fall madly in love with.

Lucas

Finally i'm very glad to have been on this journey and CANNOT WAIT for you to start House of The Dragon because oh boi...All the flack on GOT in terms of writing is totally mended and improved...The show is off to an amazing first season and it will be great revisiting it with you. Just watch out for spoilers, House of The Dragon all pertains to material that was covered so you wouldn't want to stumble into lore that spoils you.

Bran can't change the future just as much as he can't change the past. The show never explains this or even attempts to. This is exactly what I'm talking about when I say that show viewers will never truly understand it and I really wish I could sit down in a room with you to explain it all but I simply cannot so I won't engage in a comment section argument about it. I encourage you to read all the books, that's the only way it will make sense to you. There is absolutely no need to laugh at me, dude. That's a very disrespectful way to respond to someone who truly wants to help you understand it. There is no reason to be rude about it 🙄

Lucas

Nah perhaps you're right. I didn't laugh at you btw I don't know how or where I was rude in interacting with you, it's not the intention. But the basic premise of not being able to change the future is all easy when you set it in motion by revealing secrets which lead the situation to where it is. It just get's to a level of subjectivity and philosophy that is a little bit too complex but chances are if it is what you are saying we will indeed be debating the nature of choice and foretelling something that the person himself is causing and manifesting...for hours to no end. So no need. My basic stance is even assuming he knew there was no way to save anyone, he had a duty to try.

Anonymous

Thank you, and I think the beauty of Brans character is that it absolutely leads to hours long discussions about the philosophy of free choice :) Again, I highly encourage you to read the books! They're amazing and they give the show sooooo much more depth and they really enhance the viewing experience :)

I watched seasons 7 and 8 once when they aired and then never again until now (via your reactions). Since the series ended I’ve rewatched seasons 1-6 a few times but always stop there because I prefer that ending. In 2019 when season 8 aired, the disappointment from the fans was all over the news. There was a petition with millions of signatures to remake season 8. The season has a 30% rating on rotten tomatoes. And I couldn’t agree more about it being trash. The writers Weiss and Benioff mentally checked out of Game of Thrones when they were hired to make a new Star Wars trilogy. After season 6 they said they were gonna wrap up the series in “13 episodes” so they could move on from GOT as quickly as possible. They would not hand over the writing rights to anyone else. They were committed to butchering their own project. After they ruined season 8, they got fired from star wars because no one wanted to work with them after that. Karma I guess? But yea watching your reaction is interesting because I think first time bingers have a very different perspective from those of us who watched every episode as it aired from 2011 and read the books. Just having so much time to contemplate all the many storylines, characters, cryptic clues and meaningful metaphors that were completely abandoned and ignored by these writers. And the dialogue… “I know a killer when I see one” really arya? after you witnessed her murder 100,000 people. Pretty sure that line was supposed to be in episode 4. I’ve prayed every single day that if George ever finishes the books to please have a different ending lol

Shandler

I’ve loved rewatching this show with you and your care for the characters, passion and attention to detail have been incredibly satisfying to witness. It’s sad that Game of Thrones ended on such a poor note, and that there was such a marked dip in quality over the last seasons. It seems to be a case study in what happens when you have incredible actors, directors, composers, designers and cinematographers but show runners who have mentally checked out. The end result is a show where everything is exceptional apart from the writing. Game of Thrones is now a cautionary tale for how not to end a show, and I suppose it’s now as infamous as it was famous. Watching it again with you though reminded me of how, at its peak (probably season 4), jt really elevated what tv could be like possibly no show before it. I’m so thankful that it was made and I’m at the stage now that I can enjoy the memories without it being tarnished by the ending. And you’ve now got House of the Dragon, which is fantastic. It’s somehow managed to absolutely reignite the Game of Thrones fan base in one season and I can’t wait to see how you react to it. Thanks again for doing this show - it’s been awesome fun.

David Watson

I respectfully disagree with your take, on the books makes more sense that Bran becomes King than the HBO series. There is nothing in any of the books that would suggest that Bran will be King. I've read the books. In fact, I've read the multiple times. There is nothing in any of the 5 published books of a Song of Ice & Fire that would suggest that Bran will be King. Or, that it would make more sense from the book's perspective than the HBO series. All we know, up to this point in the books, is that Bran is special. Because the books touched on how the Green Seers were the ones to flood the arm of Dorne causing the bridge from Essos to Westeros to be broken. And, because the books touched on how the Green Seers tried to do the same thing to the Neck from Moat Cailin, it would suggest that Bran will probably be the one to break the North away from Westeros. But, that's only a theory for future books. However, there is nothing suggesting that Bran would be King in the books.

Razzer95

One of things that really annoyed me was that Sansa claimed the North had suffered terribly over the years and deserved to be free but by that logic shouldn't the rest of the kingdoms be free? The riverlands were in ruins due to most of the fighting being done there over the years, Westerlands are all but broke due the the Lannisters having no more gold, Stormlands lost pretty much their entire army and therefore most of the men are gone? and most of the lords of the Reach are dead? Sansa just decided that since her brother was king he wasn't going to prevent her from ruling the North as her queen and took her chance she never wants to be ruled over again which meant more to her then the people of the north's freedom.

Valene

I loved your interpretations of this show. You are a gem.

Lucas

You know, i have an unverified theory that one of the reasons GRR Martin is so long on the books and seemingly reluctant at even finishing them or continuing to write them...Is that this is more or less the ending that he has envisioned (done right) regarding Danny, etc etc(minus the Bran stuff probably ) and given the terrible reception that it got for how poorly it was done, he may be slightly worried that if he writes it he will fuck it up and disappoint fans even more who've had a taste of defeat with this end of show..The show is great and yet so marred by it's last season and a half that the books being still finished is the only thing that keeps the series as one of the greats-because if the ending to the books don't deliver, it might very well get forgotten in time..

David Watson

You may have something there. After season 8 ended, GRRM was interviewed several times and was asked the same question. "Will your books end the same way?" GRRM's responses were the same, "My books will end the same way, as the HBO series. More or less." I suspect that the reason why the books are taking long to complete, is because HBO is forcing GRRM to write stories, that can be ADAPTED into prequel series. HBO wants to please fans, by letting them know, that any prequel series that they produce will have source material behind it. And because Benioff & Weiss has completed the story, the same way his books will end up being, maybe GRRM doesn't have any "Sense of Urgency" in wanting to complete the final books. With respect. What I find LAUGHABLE, is that people who didn't like the final season of Game of Thrones, claims that it ended terribly. TV shows and movies are two different mediums. Movies have a Beginning. A Middle. And, an End. TV shows have only a Beginning. And a Middle. There are no endings for TV shows. TV shows have ended only because of poor ratings, contract disputes with actors, OR not enough people watching the show. That's it. It's only when Breaking Bad and MadMen came out, that the producers of those shows had a clear beginning, middle and end. In other words, this is new territory for tv shows. I look online, and I see some people are saying that the reason why Breaking Bad is better than Game of Thrones, is because it "Stuck the Landing". PUHH-LEASE!!!! LOL!!! Breaking Bad was a great show. No question. It will be known as one of the greatest shows on the planet. But, the show revolved around 1 person. That was Walter White. Everyone else in the show paled in comparison, to that character. Every episode, everyone wanted to know what was happening with Walter White. Wherever Walter White went, so went the show. If Walter White died, as the character did in 2014, so the show ended in 2014. The point that I am trying to make is simple. TV shows are not built to end. This notion of a tv show is great, only if it sticks the landing, is something contrived by rabid fans who think they know how a show is to be written. Nothing more. Game of Thrones is a tv series that's BUILT like a Soap Opera tv series. All My Children, Guiding Light, Young & the Restless, General Hospital, etc. These soap operas have been running on tv since the 1950s. We are talking about 70 plus years of character development. How many generations of fans do you think exist for General Hospital? I think it would be alot. So, if the producers of General Hospital were to decide to end that series in 2024, do you think that they could "Stick the Landing?". In a way, where all of the characters arcs from General Hospital, will be satisfied? I DOUBT IT!!! Too many fans of General Hospital, have attached themselves to certain characters. They claimed these characters, as their own. Just like they claim General Hospital as their own. And, they truly believe they know how a character should end up, should the show end. You cannot convince these fans, that their favorite character has to end up, a certain way. They won't believe you. That's a fact!!! That's what Game of Thrones experienced. Everybody loved Game of Thrones, up until the ending scene, of season 8 episode 4. Because certain "FANS" knew, what their favorite character was about to do, in the very next episode. LOL!!!! And, then after episode 5 ended, "FANS" of many different characters didn't like the way their character arcs ended up : 1) Jaime dying in the arms of his evil sister, Cersei. 2) Cersei dying from stone and bricks, instead of being burned or eaten by a dragon. Perhaps getting her chopped off. 3) Daenerys burning up and killing innocent men, women and children. 4) Daenerys NOT going straight to the Red Keep and killing Cersei, instead of the carnage committed on the citizens of Kings Landing. And, the 2nd best episode of season 8, "The Iron Throne". 1) Jon not being declared King because he is the heir to the Iron Throne. 2) Greyworm not killing Jon snow, for killing Daenerys. 3) Why didn't Jon just lie about how Daenerys died, and say that Drogon killed her and flew away with her body. LOL!!!! 4) Bran being voted in as King by Lords & Ladies of Westeros. 5) Sansa declaring independence for the North, King Bran agreeing and no other Lords & Ladies are contesting it, much less wanting independence for their own kingdoms. When you look at all of these complaints. They all look like they are from "Fans" who were not satisfied, on HOW their favorite characters arc ending up. So, instead of them just saying that they didn't like how their favorite characters ended up, they say things like : 1) The entire season 8 was trash. 2) Season 8 was rushed. It needed the full 10 episode season. And, it needed 2 more seasons(10) to be fully fleshed-out and satisfying. 3) Not just season 8 was trash. But, season 7 was trash too. 4) Seasons 1 through 4 are the best seasons. Simply because those are the seasons that GRRM was writing for and was on the sets. So, because of that, Game of Thrones quality of writing took a nose-dive from season 5 to season 8. 5) Benioff & Weiss rushed season 8, because they signed a contract with Disney, to do a Star Wars trilogy. 6) A petition to redo season 8, reaches 1.8 million fans. who are in agreement. Don't get me wrong. I do empathize with fans who have been attached to these characters. Some fans have tatoos of the names and images of these characters, on their bodies. Some even went as far, as naming their babies after them. I know this is true, because my cousin named his daughter Arya. Game of Thrones is a "Soap-Opera-Like" tv series. You can't end it and satisfy everyone. It's impossible. The same thing happened with Dallas(1978). The same thing happened with Dynasty(1981). And, these were tv shows that had 100 Million people watching each episode, when they aired for the first time(Free TV). I know. Because I was alive at the time, watching both series. Breaking Bad and the Sopranos, are not a Soap Opera tv series. It's more like a long drawn out movie that centered around 1 character. Without that character, the show ends. Even the audience knows it. That's why when a show like Breaking Bad or the Sopranos ends, their really isn't much dissatisfaction of it's ending. Simply because the fans are zeroed in on one and only one character. Everybody else? "Oh well". Game of Thrones is a different beast. Their is no such thing as one character, that the series centers itself around. In season 1, Game of Thrones put an end to those thoughts, after chopping off Ned Starks head. LOL!!!!! At this point, anybody can get it. LOL!!!! Game of Thrones had people caring about lots of major characters(Jon, Tyrion, Daenerys, Arya, Jaime, Ned). Even secondary characters(The Hound, Bronn, Brienne, Tormund, Davos, Varys, Jorah) . Even the villains were respected(Cersei, Joffrey, Tywin, Walder Frey, Ramsay Snow, The High Sparrow, the Mountain). These are just a few of the characters that millions of fans around the world have grown attached to. When you start comparing the numbers of loved characters of Game of Thrones, to that of Breaking Bad or even the Sopranos, you'll see that Game of Thrones outshines them in that. Combined!!!! Game of Thrones season 8, was one the top 4 best seasons, of this series. No question. Sticking the Landing is a term, that's best used for movies that have a format of Beginning, Middle and End. This doesn't apply to tv series. Game of Thrones is the greatest tv series on the planet. And, it's been 4 years since their final season aired. I've yet to see any new tv series since then, to match it. Or, even surpass it. Not even House of the Dragon. What are your thoughts?

great Reaction to a great show. I think the writers were trying to choose a King that was neutral and no side was going to protest that much, and Bran seems a good fit. Also, the reason that he possessed all the historic knowledge and he could use that to rule properly. Bran is just an idea at this point. He has no material interest. Brienne is the most honest character and obviously was going to write just facts about Jaime. Your analysis about Jon, Sansa and Arya are all correct in my opinion. Bran's "Why do you think I came all this way?" doesn't play well with me either. I'm not convince he could see the future, all clear and define. I think the writers were trying to wrapped it up and finish the episode. Sofie, your face when Bran was being chosen King was really funny. All your smirks were increasing in intensity for a minute. This is why people don't like the entire Season 8 :) You are going to miss this show and I'm going to miss your reactions about this show. You didn't disappoint me even in the last episode, catching all the tiny clues when most people wouldn't. See you on a future show.

2023-05-20 16:03:57 Your reaction helped me appreciate the show more. I love the books, but stopped reading in case they're never finished. Love the show, but I was so upset by how rushed the last season was. Watching again through your eyes (and maybe after a few years to calm down, LOL) refreshed the things I liked about the show. Regardless of my criticisms, what I love most about GoT as a story is how it questions assumptions about who's good & who's evil, who are the real heroes in history, and how a lot of that depends on who writes the story. How many major victories are credited to real life kings or queens, when the true hero's name was forgotten in ash? How many lives lost to wars started on a lie? We probably only know a fraction of the truth about our own world history. Stories are powerful magic.

lol all you have to do is watch that austin writers video from after season 8 to know your book report is wrong, dan and dave came up with jon/danys end at a bar so not from grrm this alone is a massive change from the book ending. The austin writers convention video is pure gold on how to watch two dimwits destroy their career in mins.
