Honestly this has been talked about ad eternum because yes its sorta confusing...But not very complicated and no there's no plot hole as it relates to the cure....There is only one full dose of a cure for a vampire to become human, a vampire that subsequently drinks the cure from said cured vampire (a certain not entirely defined quantity of it) will in turn become human and that original vampire like Katheryn after the cure was drained out of her by Silas will revolt back to her actual age...ie Katheryn was 5 centuries old...Bottom line is, if Elena takes the cure and Damon drinks from her Damon will be human and Elena still human from the cure will be her original age, lucky for her it's 17 or 18 years old or something like that when they drove off the bridge and she drowned.

Now we are going to have an idea to what was been the relationship between the two brothers as human, with their parents. We know already that Giuseppe was not a good father since he treated Damon with contempt, killed his own sons, and now we know that left Lilly to die in the Sanatorium, and also that he had an affair with somebody from which he had other children. Lilly saw her death as an opportunity to have a new life, leaving Damon that was seventeen in charge of a 10 years old brother, since their dad wasn’t much of a father. We saw already the beautiful scene, of Damon telling Stefan that is ok too cry at his mom funeral, while tied up his bow, scene repeated for Liz funeral where Damon tied up Stefan tie. Lilly told on Damon face that she doesn’t have motherly feelings for them and that she cares only about her new family. Damon being Damon is not showing how much that blunt declaration hurt him, but he is not going to make her hurt his little brother. He told her word by word what to say which is what he would have like to hear from her, and what he knows his brother would respond to it. It is the second time that Damon brings back Stefan from the humanity switch off and it is the second time, he does it with love, with the degree of love and tenderness he and only he, his big brother, has for him, that has become more prominent now to compensate the huge disappointment their mother has been.

Elena takes the cure and then Damon drains her. But since elena hasn’t been a vampire for long, what happened to Katherine won’t happen to her. So as long as the cure stays in Damon they will be fine

I can’t ever see Damon as a human because he’s probably the most perfect vampire there is, he’s the one who fully embraced it and is completely okay with being one. Like a perfect vampire.
