I have conflicted opinions on this episode. On one hand there’s so much good stuff to love in it and on the other such irritating shit. I hate that Willow sits down to read those books rather than escape with 1 or 2 of them. The whole show down with the mayor would have not been necessary. This episode does show the mayors deep misogyny really well but still subtle. Notice during the confrontation, despite Buffy obviously being the leader for her side, the Mayor doesn’t ever talk directly to her. He talks to the men- to Giles and then to Angel. He talks about her and around her but never to her. Also with Faith, despite their outwardly appearing familial type relationship, he speaks to her and treats her as a child. This is nicely contrasted with the Giles and Buffy relationship where Giles shows genuine trust and support of Buffy’s decisions.

I think some of that misogynistic outlook may be more about age than sex. He treats Faith like a child, but I mean, she IS a teenager and he's like 100. He kinda treated Alan similarly. With Buffy, he speaks with the elders in the room, Angel and Giles. Could be wrong... but that's just always how I took that. Then again, men in 1999 who have been alive since the 1800s probably are inherently misogynistic due to the culture they live through,

Faith was looking at her knife - not those spider things. That was her gift from the Mayor and she did not want to leave it behind.
