Lucas is an asshole in this episode and there's no defending it. Haley didn't deserve any of that treatment and I love that Nathan defended her like a good boyfriend does. Lucas could stand to take some lessons from Nathan on how to be a good boyfriend (you know lessons on how not to cheat on your girlfriend?). Haley has done a remarkable job of juggling her friendship with Lucas and her relationship with Nathan. She's done far better than Lucas did when he was in a "relationship" with Brooke (if you could even call what they had a relationship considering he was leading on an affair for much of that time). But Haley has done a remarkable job of juggling the two and there's reason for Lucas to take his neuroses out on Haley. Lucas isn't making any efforts to fix things with Nathan. Based off of the rude things he says to Nathan. Like when he says how he always wanted a brother until he found out about Nathan etc. Lucas constantly says rude things about Nathan. Neither Lucas or Nathan are really trying to bury the hatchet at this time. Also Nathan is the first to completely bury the hatchet in their relationship. Later in the season he goes to Lucas to help him train, officially smooths things over, and then defends him against Dan.

If my best friend suddenly started dating the guy who mercilessly bullied me, I'd probably act the same. And the thing about Nathan giving Lucas lessons on how to be a boyfriend, when he cheated on Peyton in episode 1. Also Lucas has made many attempts up to this point to smooth things over and Nathan always brushes him off. Pretty sure Nathan's words were "the nice guy act is getting old" last time he tried

I really don’t think you can defend Lucas about the best friend choosing their partner thing. Because almost the entire time he dated Brooke he didn’t seem to give any crap about pushing her aside for his girlfriend.

I loved this episode as well! In defense of Lucas, because that seems like the position I'll always take, it really does feel like you're losing a friend when they are in a romantic relationship. It always feels like they are choosing their partner over you, and that happened a couple of times in this episode with Haley. Also, it always feels like the onus was on Lucas to forge a relationship with Nathan, and in my opinion, he tries much harder than Nathan does. But Nathan always shuts him down, unfortunately. I know that Nathan is going through a lot, but this is a consistent thing with Nathan and Lucas' relationship. Nathan often pushes Lucas away. I really enjoyed seeing Brooke, Haley and Peyton work together in this episode. It was quite refreshing. And I am happy that Brooke won that award! She totally deserved it and I commend her behavior on this trip. She didn't have to rise above all the nonsense but she chose to do so for the team she cares so much about. Beauty and grace, that Brooke Davis. I also loved how Peyton supported her and motivated her.
