I really, really like how Tess counters Mira's surprise about staying calm about this, how it is a matter of picking your fights and of surviving and of possibly worsening the situation by erupting when the discrimination is directly about you, that Mira doesn't seem to get. And it isn't mentioned directly but still pictured a little in the cafe, how there's often a bit of shock/paralysis in being attacked directly and your existence being questioned, how it's easier to bear with it and just leave sometimes (or to stay, in that case, out of morbid curiosity, to see how it unfolds, but without direct retort). This whole arc has a subtlety that feels extremely real and, uuuurgh :(

Are the police unsafe as well? Ugh, it's a double bind because avoiding conflict in those situations does nothing to change a person's mind. It maintains the status quo, but it can also just be safer
