Confirmed by the plugin dev, it is impossible to update the animation plugin as it is limited by rpgmaker engine.

I will go for method 1 (using gif to preserve the physics simulation), but the resolution has to be limited to maintain performance and reduce file size.

Unfortunately, he is right, there is a limit to how large the gifs can be. Too large, and I've seen this, and the engine won't even be able to display it properly. It will just be a stuttery, jittery mess. Here's a question, do what you need to do with the gif size but why not also include a folder with each release or at full launch with full resolution gifs. That way we can play the game but also admire the art in a way that does it justice.

As long as we are not talking "AAA gaming" in file size, I think we will be fine.
