The nurse, Renee LeMaire, was killed in that attack. She was called the Angel of Bastogne. The reason why they had to hold the line in Bastogne was because the Germans were pushed out of France and they made one last attempt to break through the Allied defense and retake France. It was a surprise attack, and the 101st Airborne were the closest so they were sent to stop the German advance. If the Germans defeated them, they would have access to roads to push into France with tanks. It was also known as the Battle of the Bulge. That winter was one of the coldest recorded winters in recent European history. It was a terrible time.

Also, medics were considered non-combatants according to the Geneva Convention, so they were unarmed. Generally, the Germans did not shoot them because they were signatories to the Geneva Convention as the Allied forces were.

The nurse died running back into the aid station to pull out more injured soldiers. She'd saved 6 and died trying to save a seventh.
