It should come as no surprise to you that I think music theory is awesome. It's beautiful, elegant, powerful, and rigorous. It sits at the intersection of aesthetics and science. But, if you're not a musician, is there really a point to learning it? What do you gain, if you're not making music yourself? I think you gain a lot, actually. You gain the ability to listen actively, to engage with the music and participate in the experience instead of letting it simply wash over you. And that's just the start. Check it out!

Why Study Music Theory?

I love music theory. That probably goes without saying, considering I make a video about it every week. But should you? What's the point? Especially if you're not a musician yourself, it probably seems like learning theory is more trouble than it's worth.
