“Trying to sort out the timelines of the early 2000s. Making amends, something to do with big tympani drums and teeth and stripes of black paint pulled across the cheek.

He has become a dark red velvet cape. I lose my lens cap in the wind. Peter and the Wolf is playing.”

When I was a child, every morning gathered around the breakfast table, my folks would ask us what we dreamed. This practice trained me, I think, to remember my dreams better than a lot of folks do. I still do the thing that lots of us do, convincing myself that I will remember in the morning, when I ought to write things down. Or like in the dreams I had falling asleep last night, I write things down but don’t remember exactly what the dream itself was.

The early 2000s are a bit of a jumble to me- I remember lots of things clearly, just not in which order they happened. I can suss out general eras by context clues, but I think I was sorting out a lot of things as a person that I ended up processing a lot later. The order of certain things still eludes me and that must bother my subconscious. The rest of the dream? Tympani and teeth and velvet? No clue, but maybe I’m a better poet when I’m asleep.
