The reason the Aztecs have their fights in that small room with lots of breakable pots around is because at this point in time, the production can't afford any large outdoor sets, and because they were shooting as if live they couldn't cut the cameras while the actors moved to another location anyway. For an in-universe reason... well... that room is their gym. Sure, that's it.

The Doctor has not yet become the "Hero", "The All Knowing Adventurer". He is still learning and these early adventures are the key to his later becoming the True Doctor. Ive seen discussions in the fandom on which Doctor actually becomes "The Hero" - some say it happens by the end of the 2nd Doctor's run. Its failures like this that teaches him what he needs to know to being the force for good. Remember when David Bradley's Doctor & Bill are discussing the nature of Good & Evil in the universe and he doernt know why good prevails? She tells him that maybe its just some bloke and he dismisses it offhand because he hasnt yet learned what he needs to know. The Aztec adventure is very much a teaching moment for him.

National Service was in force in Britain until 1960, so Ian would have seen service. I imagine that he learnt to fight during that time. The segment with Susan was shot on film (you may have noticed the different texture) in advance as Carole Ann Ford was having her holiday at this time

21:22-21:24: Was this small close-up section of The Doctor looking back furtively, then entering the temple, sampled and reused in the opening sequence of The Name Of The Doctor in the Time Lord's security screen footage of The Doctor and Susan stealing away in the TARDIS from the repair shop?, The Doctor's temple surroundings being digitally replaced by the cylindrical TARDISes of the repair shop? Although I've not seen The Name Of The Doctor or The Aztecs in a very long while, seeing the temple scene, with The Doctor sneaking in, gave me a very strong sense of visual deja vu! As for the fight scenes, William Russell starred in ITC Entertainment's The Adventures Of Sir Lancelot -1956-'57 - as Sir Lancelot. I suspect William had his fair share of screen action in that. It was also the first British television series to have entire episodes filmed in colour. There were 30 episodes made, the last fourteen were filmed on colour stock. Amazingly, the series still exists and has been released in the past on DVD. William himself, did his National Service in the RAF. He was involved in entertainments organization during his time in the forces and after university went into Repertory Theatre. Coincidentally, the last National Service conscript, Richard Vaughan, was discharged on the 16th May 1963. The view had been taken that the large number of men absorbed into National Service had become a burden to the Army, tying up regular soldiers in training new recruits. BTW: Kat and Paula. I hope that you know what horticulture is now? Plants and stuff? Horticulture, being the science behind the development and the sustainable production of cultivated food, the basis of the dawn of agriculture and of the organization and stability - more or less - of our ten thousand year societal civilization! Like . . . Wow! I hope you're doing okay, Kat? TLC is the thing now so that you recuperate properly from the operation. All the best and happy times and places - as the Baker man with the long scarf used to say
