Terry Nation was a hell of a writer, people just associate him with the Daleks, but he was so much more.

Keith Goodnight

There's a level of intensity and darkness to these early episodes that the later series would never repeat. Producer Verity Lambert, many years later, would comment "We weren't trying to cross any lines. We just had no idea where the lines were: no one had drawn them yet."

At this point you only had a very small hint of what the Daleks actually looked like Probably not even Nation had firm grasp on their mutation). One of the lost episodes of Troughton's 2nd Doctor showed a Dalek factory. I think they were ovals, more like bugs of some sort then. Not sure when they became mutated brain/slug/thingees. But imagine growing up with the show and all you had to go on was that hint in this series. If they never went past that it would have driven the fandom nuts!

At one point they expected to show the creature they pulled out of the Dalek when Ian took its place: there are sketches by designer Raymond Cusick alongside the early sketches for the Dalek machines, that show what looks like a completely boneless humanoid (really quite disgusting). It was decided it would be too expensive to build so they ended up just keeping the creature out of sight: which turned out to be the far more effective choice.

I love how you are reacting to the cliffhangers, that was always a big part of classic Who

A number of years ago I was messing around with a tape machine and managed to create a soundscape very similar to the Skaro jungle-swamp area. I had numerous recordings of birdsong and it was simply via slowing down the speed, adding echoes and so on. What you could come up with, even with fairly simple tape machines with enough sound sources and a decent ear for possibilities was pretty effective. I'm sure that Kat and Paula would be interested in seeing some of the films that were made covering the creation of sounds that were made by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop peopled by such talents as Brian Hodgson, Dick Mills and, of course, the legendary Delia Derbyshire. A sound effects album was published in the late 70s, whilst I was at college, which I still have.

Today's my birthday (my 50th, holy crap!), so it's awesome to get more amazing Doctor Who for it! (I mean, I've seen this serial TONS of times, of course -- as well as the Cushing film based on it -- but it's always so great to watch new people reacting to and loving it. In fact, it sort of injects EVEN MORE LOVE for it in me! So yays!). ❤️❤️

Happy unbirthday - considering that I missed your birthday. You make me feel ancient. (61!)
