Someone once summed up the faulty logic of this episode this way; an environmentalist is worried a nuclear power plant will damage the environment, so becuase they are worried that will happen they blow the power plant up in order to damage the environment.

Alex Bennett

For context warp 5 is 213.75 times the speed of light while warp 9 is 1516.38 times faster than light so it is a significant limitation. Not to mention that this being an episodic show means the speed limit will never come up again on screen though tech manuals not that new ships starting with Voyager have new echo warp drives that don’t damage space.

Mark Ten

If suddenly the speed limit for all highways & roads were reduced to 45 mph except for emergency vehicles, how long would it take you to break the law?

Firefly24601

I do recall Picard saying something to the effect of "we've been authorized to exceed warp speed limitations for the duration of this mission" at least once during the remaining episodes.

In the Federation there’s no money and no profit seeking corporations. In our world these are the main vested interests stopping progress on climate change.

Salud!

I kind of can appreciate the attempt at an environmental episode here, but ultimately I found this one boring. I was more interested in the Spot story.

Brad Barter

I remember at a convention at the time they stated how Spot (one or two of them anyway) tended to want to stay away from Brent Spiner because the android makeup smelled so strongly. The scene where Data puts the bowl of cat food on the floor with the cat running up to it had to be reshot several times as the makeup overpowered the smell of the food. Eventually they had to use just a basic non-scented makeup that wasn't as white has normally used as they wanted the shot of the hand putting down the bowl with Spot running up in the same shot. Talk about trying to train a cat 🐈

Brad Barter

This episide ends up being a stand alone where the requirements of going no faster than warp five are mentioned in a couple more episodes then like in real life where environmental things get brushed aside that is exactly what happens as TNG unlike DS9 isn't suposed to have continuous storylines just stand alones with the occasional follow up episodes.

Nolan

Eh, Starfleet, being aware of the issue now, first came up with a workaround (Voyager's variable position nacelles) and then went on to solve the issue, offscreen. With no mention of having done so. Cause Starfleet engineers are just that good. "I know you have one of those famous Starfleet Engineers who can turn rocks into replicators..." 🙃

Nolan

Shoulda dropped the cat subplot and had the crew debating the merits and nuances of the issue over a game of poker.

Hey have you gals considered shifting to more TOS episodes after TNG is finished? I can think of at least a dozen classic Trek episodes that will amuse or move you and are minimally problematic, lol. Arena, The Enterprise Incident, The Galileo 7, Devil in the Dark, All of Our Yesterdays, A taste of Armageddon, A piece of the Action, Conscience of the King, Dagger of the Mind, The Deadly Years, This side of Paradise and Let that be your last battlefield all strike me as perfect Get Warped material.

It is not true that nothing was done, tremendous progress has been made into energy efficiency for example. However the reason why we have not solved global warming is because there is no simple, low cost, solution to global warming. any extreme solution proposed would also have a enormous impact to peoples lives and is simply not worth implementing. We don't want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire as the saying goes. As for plastic, it gets a bad rap, but in all honesty, it is one of our modern marvels and kind of a wonder material. There is a reason why a lot of things are made of plastic, because it is a low cost material with some fantastic properties that are really useful and ironically, the fact that plastic is not biodegradable is a feature not a bug. Imagine if all the things that you own and are made of plastic, you phone, your remote, your glasses, the dashboard on your car etc where to suddenly rot away over time, you would not be happy would you. We want things to last a long time and maintain its material properties. The fact in life is that nothing is perfect, everything has benefits and costs, fossil fuels and plastic have many great benefits and also, as we have now learned, some costs. And most people seem to find the benefits greater then the costs, so we continue to use them. The only viable solution is to innovate and figure out either viable alternatives or ways to reduce the costs. I would love to see the impact that the warp 5 limit has on the federation, I'd imagine that it would have enormous impact on the economy of the federation, its like limiting all cars and truck in the US to 20mph and not expecting there to be no consequences. But they kind of brushed it aside apart from Geordi stating that "the federation depends on warp", ok if that is the case, how come you where able to limit warp speed so casually. Well this is where fantasy breaks from reality I guess. In real life, such actions have consequences.

Roy J.

The showrunners knew it was a mistake to set an interstellar speed limit.

I just watched the Dark Page reaction, and based on some of your commentary, I really, really, really think you need to do reactions to Picard season 3 after finishing TNG and the movies. It’s basically TNG season 8 done in 10 episodes, and a natural continuation of these characters. Perhaps after the final episode of TNG it might be more intriguing. It’s night and day different to the first two seasons, which I personally didn’t care for (except one episode). I know you’re wanting to move on from Trek after this, but I feel like you’d both be missing out on the rest of the TNG story.
