Why were they using a runabout? There was no pilot to take it back to where the conference had been, and they’re not assigned to starships.

I think what Data is saying about time is that everything exists in the exact same moment in space and time, outside the anomalies they were just dealing with. Like, how people perceive time is just a personal bias based on what they're doing. So Data doesn't have that bias, etc. For him, 60 minutes is 60 minutes, regardless of what he's doing. I also like that this is the first time we get to see the runabout or Danube-class in TNG, which was originally debuted in DS9. :)

Anonymous

Starships like the Enterprise are certainly capable of carrying them as it delivered 3 of them to DS9. So why wouldn't one be assigned to the Enterprise as an extension of its shuttle complement since the Runabout was created?

Anonymous

Interesting facts about the use of DS9's runabout set in this episode; it is the only time that the aft section interior is seen in any of its appearances (1 on TNG, many in DS9 and 1 on VOY). Per the DS9 Technical Manual, the aft section is modular and can be swapped out for different purposes, as can the "roll bar" seen on some runabouts in DS9. The one used here was never given a name in dialog, but all Danube-class runabouts are independently registered starships (i.e. they are not strictly attached to a larger ship or station), and are named after Earth rivers, such as the Orinoco, Yangtze Kiang, Rubicon, etc. They also have a reputation for being highly expendable (the "redshirts" of Starfleet ships, if you will); the USS Rio Grande is the only DS9 runabout to survive the entire run of the series, and they even joke about how fast they go through runabouts in one episode. Good stuff!

Have you seen the blueprints for the enterprise D? The main shuttle bay that is not shown on the tv-show is huge. So there's at least plenty of room for a runabout class vessel in there.

Anonymous

Sometimes you wonder if they ever run out of runabouts =).

Brad Barter

Well since Sisko used to work at the starship building platforms of Utopia Planetia he probably had some pull for having new ones on stand-by especially with how volatile their section of space was even from the beginning of it switching from Cardassian rule to Star Fleet.

Nolan

I totally get being a bit fidgety while watching stuff, but every time Kat momentarily looks way from the screen I get anxious she's gonna miss something, lol. This is actually one of my favorite episodes for being just such a cool way to mess with time. And of course, Jonathan Frakes would go on to direct the movie "Clockstoppers" so this episode probably helped him a lot with that. It's also the only appearance of the Runabout vessel in TNG, which DS9 uses as it's regular exploration vessels. It's also the only appearance of the aft living quarters of a Runabout in the entire franchise. The set gets used on DS9 as other things, but never for this purpose again, which is so odd to me. Could've been a nice set to have. And it's part of the reason I prefer the Runabout to pretty much all other auxiliary Star Trek vessels. I just think it's be super fun to load up that Space Winnebago and go on a nice jaunt.

Aaron Thorpe

This has always been one of my favourite episodes.

Mark Ten

Never quite understood how the runabout could be as well equipped and as fast as a full starship. Whats the purpose of a starship with a 1000 people when you can get to the same place as fast in a runabout that only needs 1 or 2 to crew it?

Nolan

Starships have the advantage of Decks high worth of computer storage, and I assume industrial sized waste processing and recycling systems, cargo bays, and matter reserves for the replicators. Runabouts are basically RVs, good for short roadtrips, but resupply would be difficult as their speed and range, while higher than a typical shuttlecraft, are not as high as that of a starship. Runabouts are nice, but it'd suck to get stranded between starbases.

Nolan

The real question is, why use a runabout when they have the Captain's Yatch? (Budget obviously, but I guess we assume Picard just hates the thing)

Nolan

And the first and only time we ever see the aft living space. Wish DS9 used it even once. They had the set, it was used as other things, but never as the Runabout.

Henchman Twenty1

While better than shuttles, Runabouts are still not quite as fast as full-sized starships and have a shorter range as well as significantly less firepower and shield strength.

Matthew Zeidman

The Romulans remaining on the warbird got Event Horizoned there at the end.

Henchman Twenty1

I thought it was kind of funny how the runabouts were a mainstay on DS9 throughout all seven seasons and yet they never showed the aft compartments, and in this one and only use of one in TNG they show us the aft compartment. In the technical specs it says that the aft section is modular and can be swapped out for different sorts of needs such as hauling cargo or transporting passengers. But they never showed any of that on the show.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

This is one of my favorite episodes as it does some unique things and keeps you guessing til the end. The only part that was a bit too weird was the smiley face that Picard drew

Nolan

Well, sorta like how we barely see the Ent-D's main shuttlebay except at the end of "Cause and Effect," or the Captain's Yatch never. Then there's the Aeroshuttle on Voyager that never saw any action.

Chris Neumann

Way too hard to shoot all of that on a standard shuttle set (though you do notice them moving from room to room an awful lot in the episode).

Chris Neumann

Yeah, I always used to think of the runabouts as big shuttles but they're really more like micro-starships/

Chris Neumann

And of course the INTERIOR of the Aeroshuttle was going to just be the runabout interior again!

Andrew Hogan

I think it was discussed on Red Letter Media. Mike and Rich talked about it, but I don’t remember what conclusion they came to.

Brett Delbridge

Troi was on a Romulan ship for a few days and now she’s a Romulan expert

Joe Concepts

I originally missed the tiny callback with Troi tapping her neck to calm down!
