The only criticism I ever had of this episode was that turning the Doctor into a Weeping Angel seems such a huge lost opportunity to me. When ep 4 ended my jaw dropped and made a cracking sound when I tried to put it back in place. I said "Holy shit, did you see that?" and I was alone at the time. I mean the concept was so mind blowing that i almost felt they could have spent an entire episode just on that and say "to hell with the Flux." It was the biggest cliff hanger in who history. And Chibnall resolved/discarded it in a couple of minutes.

The bit with "our new corporal" with the audio clip of Nicholas Courtney's voice in this episode really bothers me. Its only purpose is to be fanservice and yet it diminishes one the fandom's most beloved characters. Lethbridge-Steward was already a Colonel when first introduced in "The Web of Fear" and knew nothing of UNIT; in his next appearance he's been promoted to Brigadier and is in command of UNIT. it's plainly stated that UNIT was created in response to the events of the earlier story, and strongly implied that UNIT was his idea (as one of the few survivors of the earlier story) and that he was its founding commander. Now UNIT is some buffoon's idea and Lethbridge-Steward was just one of its early recruits. Dr Who has never had consistent continuity and it doesn't matter if they change things— but why change things in a way that diminishes a fan-favorite character, who you only bring up in order to please those fans? It's an utterly bizarre misstep.

I had a slightly different interpretation of that scene. (There are potential spoilers for Classic Who, so I'll have to be a little vague.) This scene is set in 1967, so we know The Brigadier was still a Colonel and Sergeant Benton was still a Corporal. So my interpretation is that the voice of Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart is yelling at the newly-transferred-to-UNIT Corporal Benton. This explains the voice of The Brigadier, as well as the General's dialogue identifying the event as a new Corporal being brought on. It's pretty confusingly written. One clarifying name in the dialogue would have made things much clearer.

I feel like before the series was COVID-shortened, there might have been half an episode before the Doctor was freed. Tecteun gloating and doing exposition to a frozen Doctor, possibly threatening her destruction while helpless and frozen, etc.

I like that as headcanon-- although isn't the dialog something like "Our new corporal is a bit of a shouter" which indicates the voice is the corporal? But even if so, I think I'll take your interpretation.

Yeah, it doesn't completely fit with everything, including what I've subsequently learned about the script, etc. But it makes more sense than someone going from Corporal to Colonel in two years (or even ten years, depending on how you date some Classic episodes). 😄

The fun part for me is that Joseph Williamson was a real person who actually built a labyrinth of tunnels in Liverpool.

Bill

*sigh* Williamson was great.

That old cranky British guy, walking around the universe and shouting at everything he sees, is the most doctor who thing I have ever seen.
