Im not a fan of Star Fleet doctors. Too often they stand over the wounded with a flashy instrument and say "Sorry, nothing I can do," and wait for the patient to expire. Crusher included. God damn it, break a sweat! Try anyway. Dont just stand there looking grave. Hit em in the chest or something.

Kalhoun

This episode was fun and has a great pay off in a future episode. I think as well the actor who plays Jobril is in that one as well as a human Starfleet officer. I won't say more. You'll need to look out for it when it happens.

Bruce Bromley

The way Crusher was noiring it up this episode you would think she and Picard were spending time in the Holodeck with some Dixon Hill stories.

You know I had forgotten how Beverly got her job back so I was waiting for it, and then I guess they just don't explain it.....

I'm sure the shuttle log was recording everything. Great Episode

Anonymous

Nope. Her solving the murder did not change the reason she was fired.

Mark Chrisco

It should be noted the shuttle was named in honor of Robert Justman, long time associate of the Great Bird, Gene Roddenberry, and credited with finding and promoting Patrick Stewart as Picard.

DC

Yeah, this episode does a lot of hand-waving to make it work. I did always wonder why they didn't send Data in the shuttle in the first place. Plus, shouldn't he and/or Geordi have been extremely interested in this technology? They were oddly sidelined. It's still one of my favorite episodes because I love Crusher and she never got enough to do and I'm a big fan of mysteries. Guinan & Beverly were a fun duo too that never got to interact this much before. But, they could have had one line about Picard smoothing things over with the Ferengi ... maybe bring up how the Ferengi took their children hostage that one time! Or, at least say that the Ferengi forgave the issue because she solved his murder.

I'm glad we got another Beverly Crusher episode but there's a lot of minor annoyances with the script and plot...Kat's reactions and how she figured it out was great though.

Firefly24601

The Klingon scientist Kurak was played by Tricia O'Neil, who played Captain Rachel Garrett in "Yesterday's Enterprise."

Henchman Twenty1

I really felt that they could have dropped any of the main characters into the lead for this episode and just decided to give it to Beverly. I get it that she probably has other interests beyond medicine, but they never showed such for shield tech before or since. At least they didn't just forget all about these new super cool shields, which become part the franchise's tech canon going forward.

gobmob2000

Has Starfleet never heard of autopilot? Why experiment with a person first rather then just a unmanned shuttle?

Matthew Zeidman

Dr. Crusher is my favorite character. It’s enjoyable watching her go all chaotic good when there’s a wrong to be righted. In “The Perfect Mate” and “Symbiosis,” she makes it clearly known that she doesn’t agree with Picard’s lawful good approach, but doesn’t go so far as to defy his orders. Here, she throws caution to the wind and goes for it. The whole “you’re-not-allowed-to-perform-an-autopsy” bit was definitely contrived to ratchet up the tension and set up the Guinan scenes. An on-ship death under mysterious circumstances would be more than enough cause to ignore the family’s wishes. I do like how this episode pushed back somewhat against the racial stereotypes (e.g., all Ferengi are morally bankrupt hyper-capitalists), although they kind of lean into it by portraying the Klingon scientist as a bit of a brute. The moment where Kat found out the identity of the killer was joyful. In another life, Paula would have made a great professional poker player. She didn’t let on at all when Kat was speculating.

Nolan

Nah, the Ferengi family just remembered that their death rituals already involve disecting the body so they can dessicate and sell parts of it off. They then realized they got to have part of that done for free by a Starfleet doctor, so didn't have to pay for it, plus, they can now add an additional overhead cost to his pieces because not only was he desecrated by a Starfleet officer, but he was also a notable scientist responsible for an innovative technological breakthrough. Add on the fact they have a technological breakthrough they can sell and that family likely made a lot of bank thanks to Dr. Crusher. Be nice if ANY of that was in the episode though. (Plus, the actual ins and outs of Ferengi funeral traditions hadn't been established yet)

Ben Chan

@DC, Sending Data to be the canary in the coal mine would've struck too close to the "disposable people" scenario they argued against in "Measure of a Man" imo. I can see why they avoided it.

Jarrod Wild

The episode is the victim of the restrictions of episodic television in that era. You want to do all this setup for a big payoff in the climax but then have little time left for a denouement. So many episodes of TNG would just end with a line or two of dialogue for the button, then a cut to exterior stock footage of the Enterprise leaving orbit, then end credits.
