As bad as Tasha's original death was, this one they gave her is worse......

One thing I always felt was wrong about this episode was that Worf didn't just take a leave of absence from Starfleet. He outright RESIGNED entirely, and then he just goes back to the Enterprise at the end of the episode as if he didn't just throw that part of his life away. It rang false, like any member of Starfleet can resign and wage an illegal war and then come back with no repercussions. I get that it needed to happen because of contract reasons and story reasons, but I would have loved to see actual consequences.

Next week, Kat, her eyes open!

Not only did Data show a little anger here, but something even more profound: instinct. It's such an entirely human trait. You could say he's been observing humans so much that he can correlate a positive rash action with a low success probability that results in greater success than was predicted. It could be he learned this from poker. Or it could be...something more!

Hope you two had a great holiday and happy to see you back. As much as I was looking forward to seeing your reactions to this episode, I can't wait to see the next two. As you kids would say, they are straight bangers!

Brett Delbridge

He requested an extended leave of absence and was denied. Resignation was his only choice

Jonathan Bruser

No, I get that he resigned. What I think is strange is that he just goes back to Starfleet as if nothing happened. It would be the same as me saying to my boss, "I want to go visit my home country and fight for its freedom, but since you won't give me enough time off, I'm quitting my job," and then going to fight only to come running back to my boss and asking me to hire me back at the same position I had when I quit. I'm not saying that Worf resigning was a bad thing. I just wish that there were actual consequences for his decision instead of an immediate return to the status quo.

Brett Delbridge

Hmmm looking ahead episode 21 is going to be interesting…

I believe there's historical precedent for soldiers of one group being officially removed in order to be temporarily absorbed by an ally officially under their flag/uniform, for legal/jurisdiction purposes.

JXTN

I don't think it needs be put in human terms like instinct. Complex predictive analysis with cost-benefit comparison, or something like that, could come to the same conclusion.

Jonathan Bruser

That's interesting. I don't think that's what happened in this episode, but thank you for the context all the same! Always happy to learn something new. If that had been the case in this episode, I wish they would have made that clearer. I suppose I can't shake the feeling that this episode wanted to have its cake and eat it too, as the saying goes. It's a minor issue in the grand scheme of TNG, given that it's far more episodic than serialized by nature. I suppose I've become spoiled in recent years due to the onset of serialization becoming more of the norm. I do apologize to anyone if I've given offense or else come off as whiny and unkind about all of this. And thank you, everyone, for replying without meanness or cruelty, but with a kind and open dialogue. It is much appreciated. And as I recall, episodes 2 and 3 of Season 5 are both among my favorites. I can't wait to meet one of my favorite guest characters once again for the first time! ^_^

I am definitely someone who never liked Sela's story because of what it tells us about Tasha's fate. Yesterday's Enterprise gave her a better end than she had originally. It was a nice way to give the character a better send off. Having her be forced into being a "consort" and being executed just sounds terrible. It was clever connecting Sela to the time travel story. I just wish it was done differently.

Ian Smith

Although the various sub-plots are really entertaining and well written, for me this episode is completely stolen by Denise Crosby (and I mean that in a good way!) The character of Tasha never properly allowed her to display any range or charisma, but here she dominates the screen. (Her meeting with Picard, for me,is the high point of an all round entertaining episode). It just goes to show that villains make the best characters :)

In the game Star Trek Online, wich has all rights and actors of real Star Trek(and the fake new s**t) . You learn that Sela lied. Denise Crosby repraised her role as Sela and has many dialouges with the player and you learn that Tasha was quite happy with the Romulan but at some point wanted to go, so she was captured and later lived in the outa worlds. In tht game Tasha is stil alive in 2409.

Matthew Zeidman

Glad to see you all back on the TNG horse. Hope you had a restful break. Katrina made an excellent point re: Guinan and Sela blaming Picard for “sending” Tasha to the past. Obviously, the writers were kind of half-remembering what happened in “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” There wasn’t any good reason for retroactively making Picard responsible, as he wasn’t wracked with guilt or anything like that.

Henchman Twenty1

I was glad they gave Chief O'Brien something to do besides babysit the transporter room all day. It makes sense as he had been Capt. Maxwell's tactical officer back on the Rutledge. Also, Hobson should never get promoted again. Despite coming around at the end, his actions and attitude were totally unbecoming of an officer.

A lot of good and "interesting" episodes this season. I think there's a good argument to made that this is TNG's most consistently strong season out of all 7. There is a lot of really good storytelling and character work on a week-to-week basis.

From what I understand, it's not that they didn't think that Tasha and Castile had the chemistry. They just didn't think they would have had any opportunity to have actually had sex. They wouldn't have done it during the war, they wouldn't do it on the way back, and they wouldn't have had time to do it while awaiting execution. Other than that, all I will say for now is that I always found Sela's story to be fishy.

I think the reason why he had to resign is because his serving as an active combatant would've been a violation of the prime directive. Even if a Starfleet officer is on leave, they're still bound to abide by it. Although it seems at the end that there are no consequences, I'd imagine him officially rejoining Starfleet would be a process that entailed more than Picard just saying "ok".
