In all honesty it wasn’t Paula and Kat’s opinions that I struggled with at the end of Season 8; we’ve all read negative reviews. It was the lack of humility with which they were expressed… you guys were literally rolling your eyes at the dialogue and swearing at the characters involved! I always appreciate your passion but it felt hostile! Like Kat pre-empted that reaction and Paula doubled down! And it’s obvious that a lot of people felt the way I did because literally over a hundred people commented on those episodes on Patreon alone!! And they may have been mean in the comments… but you were mean in the reaction.

No one seems to mind overly emotional reactions when its joy or sadness. Screaming in excitement or bawling in despair is celebrated. But when a reactor disagrees or does not like something in the show they are watching, they need to be quiet and humble about it? I get that reactions that are negative aren't as fun to watch. But these are real time reactions, no space to emotionally distance yourself, logically analyze the structure and characters. If the reactor doesn't like that ONE thing, and that ONE thing happens over and over, not sure if the reactor is supposed to fake their reaction, pretend they don't care about it? Let's also look at why the Gals reacted the way they did to the atrocious comments in Patreon. Here they are, giving their true responses without filter or time to think. Paula completely does not like one or two aspects of one character that she has really enjoyed for 20 or so episodes, and expresses those opinions unequivocally. A character that is not a real person, does not have feelings, and does not actually exist. In return, they get bombarded with vitriolic comments about them, their reaction, how biased they are, etc. (I'm not talking about people who simply disagreed with their opinions, I am one of those myself, but the ones to came in with personal attacks.) Is it any wonder they push back? To do the job they're literally being paid to do, and then get absolute shit for it. You'd push back too! But to attempt justify that vitriol due to a so-called lack of humility, or because they were mean to a TV show.

I was in the same boat: I loved the show but found a lot of inconsistencies with Clara's character. As much as I loved the actor's portrayal, I found there was a lot of ' ... and then it was all ok' moments without enough exposition or explanation. (The glowing portal-of-returning-from-cyber-death for one.) It actually makes me sad to see how many people have resorted to personal attacks, especially within the Patreon community which was normally a much more positive place. You can disagree with someone without being mean. I for one have shouted at the TV more than once with an impassioned "Fuck you, Moffett" during this show, yet can accept that others love the things that I didn't. That's the great thing about this show: It means so many different things to so many different people. Personally, I was never a fan of Martha but I know many people who adored her character. Anyway, on to Season Nine! Allons-y!
