This whole reaction was REALLY good. And the discussion after was top notch. The episode is fraught with complexity and uncomfortableness that makes for interesting discussions. I'm going to have to watch this a few times to get each Gals's nuances on this!

George Baxter

I would say that they've developed Danny pretty evenly. He appears in more episodes in this season than Rory did in S5 and his character was given no backstory. Rory was just named as Amy's boyfriend without any establishment! Here we literally go through romantic comedy beats. Its interesting to compare them. People give Moffat flack for not working on side characters but Davies never had any of his companions in real relationship arcs outside of their connection to the Doctor.

"Why won't you tell him the truth?" Did you SEE the look of horror he gave her when he thought she was a "space woman"? Why would she think he'd understand? At the very best, most people who haven't experienced what she has would consider her insane. At worst, well...remember what Jackie did back when she found out that Rose was hanging out with an alien? She called the authorities on them. The only thing that saved them was that UNIT was already there to deal with the spaceship that crashed, so they could vouch for him. Besides, the Doctor hasn't told Clara anything about what might happen if people found out about him, so I can only imagine the things her own imagination would come up with. Other companions have assumed that if people found out about the Doctor, he'd be experimented on or downright killed and autopsied. So yeah, while the story she's concocting was really weak, I don't blame her for trying to protect the Doctor and herself by hiding his identity.

I really enjoyed this reaction. I think American's struggle with passive aggression more than Brits do.. hard to tell whether that's healthier or not! The character dynamics in this episode are full of friction and lying but that seems pretty true to life. Rory always felt flat to me. Yes he had issues with the Doctor but ultimately he was pretty blindly supportive even when Amy sort of cheated on him before their wedding!! The soldier thing always struck me as a false equivalency. The Doctor hates violence historically but he doesn't hate the military institution in such a black and white way. Its like when they say the Sonic ScrewDriver 'doesn't work on wood'. Its an over simplification; the sonic can only interact with mechanical devices. The sonic wouldn't work on brick walls either, or a steel door with no mechanism!! Bit of a rant... Ultimately its weird how this season the audience bring so much of their own baggage. Maybe the show isnt being as escapist?? Its challenging and characters make wrong decisions but that's real drama for a show that's 8 seasons in!! As much as Doctor Who can re-invent itself back to back years put a lot of strain on its relevance by this point. That was why the female Doctor was so exciting! And we all know how that turned out...

I don't like the character Danny. I never have. I personally don't think romance has a place in doctor who. That's why I've never liked 10 and Rose, Rory, or Danny.

Amy Chlebus

I think the female doctor would have worked better if they would've picked they would've picked a better show runner and female actor, but That's just my personal opinion

GG Gremlin, has the ability to download been disabled? I've been trying to download and save the video all say to no avail.

I don’t mind a romance storyline in DW, so long as it doesn’t involve the Doctor. Even in Classic Who there were some (very subtle) romantic relationships, either between companions, or a companion with another character. You can’t tell me there wasn’t something going on between Ian and Barbara😘. But yes, the topic was handled very differently in those days. The Doctor, though, should remain asexual, in my opinion, so I do find the Rose, Martha and River relationships a bit of a problem. As for Danny, though, I don’t dislike him, but neither do I actively like him. I find the three way dynamic between Clara, Danny and the Doctor interesting and actually quite refreshing. It plays into the whole “Everyone tells lies/Trust no one” theme that’s bubbling along in series 8. And while Danny makes out he’s about telling the truth and being honest, he obviously is carrying quite a bit of baggage himself about the army, and hiding something.

Amanda Logsdon

Im a huge fan of clara but never have liked danny that much, and i still dont know why. I didnt think the two had much chemistry.

Amy Chlebus

@Lloyd B I hear what you're saying. I never had a problem with it in classic who because it was so subtle. I don't like what they've done with it in new who. It's like they throw it in your face.

Jeff Seely

I don't think Danny was written well in this episode. The fact that SPACE ALIENS EXIST and that one of them is right in front of him should have affected him way more than it did. Instead, he went from presumably having his mind blown in that one scene to so completely accepting everything that not only does he talk about Clara's life with the Doctor in normal human terms, he INTENTIONALLY INSULTS the space alien he just met to his face. It makes absolutely no sense.

While we used to allow patrons to download episodes, our original account was banned from Vimeo because of copyright infringement. One of the main deciding factors in that ban was because of the fact people could download our content and the censor flagged us. For our channels safety and to be able to keep providing patrons content we have deciding to not allow downloading.

That intro, was not ready for it! brilliant. Great reaction as always!!

To be fair, while it was downplayed in the Moffat era, earth in the Whoniverse, had gone through several high profile alien invasions. So it kinda make sense that Danny shock isn't that aliens exist, but that Clara knows one of them.

Jeff Seely

I would agree with you if not for series 5. The alien invasions of earth seem to have been retconned out of existence by the crack in the skin of the universe and the rebooting of the universe. Since then, the only worldwide invasion event has been the weird little black cubes in 'The Power of Three' -- certainly more than enough to have people questioning if space aliens were behind them, but not definitive proof of said aliens. So to me, meeting the Doctor was Danny Pink's first ever confirmation that space aliens exist.

tal goren

I am not so sure about that, but even if this is true, there have been enough "mini invasions" for the world's governments to know that the threat is out there. as an ex-soldier it make sense that Danny would at least be made aware of the possibility that one day he might have to fight aliens. you don't want this kind of shock to hit your military forces in the day they are needed

Martyn Hill

The Brigadier became a maths teacher after he left UNIT, so the Doctor's reaction is a bit harsh, perhaps he is just jealous of Danny's relationship with Clara

BiPolar HoneyBear

Brigadier was special. He wasn't just another soldier. That's why the doctor liked him. He was a good man in a bad system.

BiPolar HoneyBear

It's amazing. I hate Danny more and more for each time I see this series.

T.C. Thompson

I watched half this episode, and I didn't finish it, then the next episode came out and I heard many bad things, and I just never got around to picking the series back up, I have watched Husbands and Capaldi's regeneration, but that is it.
