Hiya there!
How are we all doing today? Well, I hope! Gosh, it's just over a week until Christmas now. Fingers crossed I can get that nice Christmas art done for you all in time! But I can assure you it's going to be well worth the wait, and--in my opinion--completely tops the amazing art of last year! So you're in for a special treat~
As I may have mentioned before, upon releasing the new alpha build this month, I then set to polling the alpha players to see what they wanted me to focus on the most for the next build--and the result was pretty overwhelmingly in favour of digging more into the side events and h-scenes with each character! More specifically, the classic girls from Chapter One that you've all come to know and love over the months~ So for the next build I'll be giving some extra classic content with some familiar girls! This of course means putting the focus on the monster camp established just outside of Rhan and finally fleshing out its inner-mechanics.
From the screenshot above, you can see you'll be able to strike up conversations with your monster girl of choice for the day to help strengthen your bond with them. Sometimes these conversations with be simple ones, depending on various factors--but at other times, they'll be considered 'events'--basically extended conversations that you really want to get if you ever stand a chance of growing closer to them! Using the icon system, I'm going to try and be as clear as I can if possible to establish what characters have idle chatter (that won't take up a time slot) and which ones have lengthier scenes for that day (that will take up a chunk of the in-game day and push you closer towards maxing out that lovely ol' relationship bar~)
Though there's a good chance that mixing idle conversation with the extended scenes might muddy the waters--so I'll more than likely shuffle idle, fun chatter to a dedicated option. Maybe with randomised results so it's like you're stopping by the camp and seeing what they're up to? That probably sounds like a better solution, so that way you know which menu will do what when reaching the camp!
And alongside detailing these menus--I also wanted to explain a bit about event progression, and how frequently you may find yourself in a h-scene with any given girl.
Keep in mind this is only a general reference point--and there are many factors which will go against these rules, depending on story beats and so on--as I want to avoid things feeling too formulaic and think it'll be fun to keep you on your toes--so you'll never know when the next h-scene might spring up!
But, essentially, it goes like this, assuming repeated visits and events with any given monster girl:
> Initial h-scene with a monster girl (Usually upon first meeting--in very extreme cases a monster girl might not be interested in Matt right off the bat, though!)
> Event #1 with a monster girl (Usually involves Matt returning to the scene of the 'crime', where he may have failed a quest previously. You'll unlock new areas to return to casually by successfully failing quests. Here he'll meet the monster girl again and typically fashion a stronger bond with them, learn a little bit about them, and so on)
> Event #2 with a monster girl (Same as before, but becoming more familiar with the monster girl. Here intimacy levels begin to grown...and depending on if you're lucky or not the next time you visit...!)
> H-scene #2 with a monster girl (Jackpot--they've become so infatuated with dear Matty that they jump his bones a second time and fun times unfold for all~)
And from here, the cycle repeats, unlocking h-scenes and growing closer to them through more dialogue focuses events. This general framework applies to the monster camp, visiting new areas, and so on! If you've played Persona 3/4/5 and are familiar with the Social Links there--I'm essentially borrowing heavily from that aspect! Whereby you steadily build up their affection--and then gain new h-scenes as a 'reward' of sorts for furthering the bond to a certain level!
As I say--I want to avoid it feeling too formulaic or 'gamey'--so will be throwing quite a few twists and turns in to this framework to keep you on your toes. Maybe some characters won't be at a specific area when you go to visit! Maybe some characters will surprise you by paying a visit to you first! Maybe you'll only be able to unlock certain scenes by having a combined affection total with multiple characters!
There's lots of fun ways to play around with the conditions without it feeling stale--but at the same time I know I have to avoid making things too complex, or I know I'll be getting a hundred emails a day from people asking how to woo their lady of choice! So I'll try my best to find a middle-ground with this and have a system that feels fresh, but not too chaotic to navigate.
Anyways, that's my ramble of the week complete! I hope you followed along!
What do you think of the proposed method of interacting with the monster girls? Do you think it'll be fun? Is it too complicated to follow? Do you feel it'll detract from the visual novel experience by being so interactive? I'm listening to all of your thoughts and we still have time to adjust the system--so nothing is set in stone! Please let me know what you think!
Until next time! Whoooosh~
