Hang in there y’all, this next episode Is the hardest to watch yet, in my opinion at least. You’re almost finished! Thank you for your thoughtful and empathetic reactions.

The next episode is genuinely horrific but you won't regret it. Good luck!

Regards to the mention of a documentary vs a drama, if y'all decide to watch the third series coming out later this year (masters of the air), before hand y'all could check out the HBO documentary the cold blue. I don't believe will have any spoilers for the show but will help provide background on what's happening plus a comparison of the two styles of presentation.

This is simply the most brutal depiction of war I have ever seen on film. bravo to the girls for sticking with it, my wife said "F that" after the second episode--I was on my own!!!!!

Knowing Lena never remarried after John which adds to the weight of this episode I feel.

I think Iwo Jima veteran USMC Major General Fred Haynes who was a Captain for the 28th Combat Team on Iwo, may have summed up the battle best by stating "Each day we learned new ways die". Side note, from a source that escapes me at the moment, every Marine who attended John and Lena's wedding would either be killed or grievously wounded on Iwo Jima. The newly formed 5th Marine Division was an experienced detachment with legendary former Para-Marine and Marine Raider (considered the first "Special Operations Forces" of WW2) battalions mixed within its ranks. Iwo Jima had to be won hole by hole, pillbox by pillbox and cave by cave. The 5th Marines, along with the 3rd and 4th divisions, would pay dearly in brutally fierce combat.

So o am new to Patreon and I'm just wondering if i we can't listen to the episode itself or how does this work

What really sucks is knowing that John would Receive the Navy Cross for his Actions making a huge impact on rallying men to breakout from the Beach, John died on the Day of the Invasion living only 8 Hours of the 5 week battle, his death was also an instant loss to morale, seeing him perish, meant to other Marines that nobody is Safe. Although John was Killed on February 19th, Lena wouldn’t Receive His Death Notification until March 7th, Lena’s 32nd Birthday; they were only married 6 months before he was killed. Also John is My Biggest Hero.

We can’t listen to the episode due to copyright but it’s really enjoyable if your watching the series along with them on a different device

Evanson was also killed on Iwo Jima and Chuck Tatum earned a bronze star for heroism later on in the battle. as the war went on the Japanese changed their strategy and the human wave tactics and bonsai charges that they use on guadal canal and the like were abandoned and they started making the Marines come to get them out of their defensive positions. This is why Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Saipan etc were all so horrific because no longer were Japanese just charging and letting the Marines kill them by the thousand. They played the rest of the war on defense and it truly made it a hole by hole, yard by yard nightmare. They were destined to die but they made sure they took every single person they could with them.

When’s the next one coming out? Can’t wait !
