Incredible job by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Eliza Dushku. They capture each other's mannerisms perfectly. Slight oversimplification to say Faith's behaviour is because someone said thank you. Her self-hatred is evident in the words she speaks to her own face whilst fighting Buffy at the end - "You're nothing. Disgusting. Murderous bitch." etc. It's pretty fair to say she felt that way well before this episode. She seems uncomfortable with the thank you because, as you acknowledged, that's not something she ever really received. Much of her downfall in Season 3 stemmed from not feeling fully accepted by the scoobies, who were very much 'Buffy's people', and therefore feeling very alone following her accidental murder. It's easy to see why it seemed easier to turn to the Mayor, with whom she was able to create a family of her own, much like Buffy had with the scoobies - the trade off being that she needed to lean into her newfound identity as a murderer. Through him, she receives all the praise and affirmation that she felt Buffy took all of when they were both on the 'good' side. During the body swap, she finds it easier to act as a hero because she was in the body of who she perceived to be a hero and being treated as such by those around her. When faced with her own identity again, we can see her literally fight against it - she sees that body as representative of all the evil she's done. Being back inside that body must evoke a lot of complex emotions. Faith is one of the most interesting characters in the Buffyverse for me - I'm pretty sure I could go on for another few paragraphs but I'll leave it there lol.
