Just what we need while waiting for tonight’s vlog

Anonymous

How wonderful to have his expertise and advice in addition to Dan. A designer is not a common commodity to have around...

Anonymous

And a folly on the island..fabulous! Perhaps a statue of Persephone! Or Saint Francis. All the wood from the downed trees can be used for firewood or Selmar can cut it up to make things in the future, this all is so exciting!

Anonymous

Love the extra content, Stephanie! Looking forward to your next Q&A.

Anonymous

I love the idea of a natural pool, having swum once in a granite quarry in NH that was filled with rainwater and some 100 feet deep, so clear we could see to the bottom.

Anonymous

I really enjoy listening to Davy’s ideas and perspective. And let me just say I’m not opposed to all of my patron money going to buy plants and bulbs...and even a statue. 😉

Anonymous

Oh I love all of this. What wonderful plans!! Thank you so much for sharing!

Anonymous

Goodness me Stephanie,, so many lovely ides for the dry moat and it will look fantastic, so excited about this as you must be as well. Terrific news Davy will be back. Dan, you had better have an early night just thinking of all that work lol. Love from The Dordogne xx

Anonymous

Great team. Wish I was there <3 <3 <3 xxx

Anonymous

maybe hang a swing off of that big tree in the dry moat?

Anonymous

Wow. So many ideas! Dan will be busy for decades to come!

Anonymous

Such a treat to hear all your hopes and dreams for the garden areas! thank you for sharing, Stephanie!

Anonymous

What a joy. Love the idea of a bulb carpet of crocus etc in the dry moat and a natural approach to letting the plants grow and self seed. Thank you for this bonus content. ♥️🥰

Anonymous

Davy's expert advice coupled with Dan's excellent gardening skills will make Lalande a Garden of Eden! A landscape design is a huge long term undertaking (not to mention investment) and plants will always perform best if the right plant is chosen for the right place. This planning stage is so important and you are so wise to give it the time and effort it deserves.

Anonymous

So exciting to get to share in the planning of furthering the fairy tale! I think removing the trees at the dry moat will be AMAZING!!

Anonymous

Steph - What you need is a forest working party - I’m happy to volunteer 😁😁

Anonymous

Mistletoe: if you have a shotgun, you can knock it down with buckshot, so they say!

Anonymous

It all sounds amazing! You have talked about an island in the lake before. I think would be beautiful but I’m wondering how you plan to mow/maintain it?

Anonymous

I am so excited about the dry moat. Bulbs and maybe wildflowers and bringing to light the old stone walls! Oh how I wish I could see it one day. And the "mistletoe tree", that is exactly the kind of thing I would love. Such fun you have ahead of you. Much love and joy to you all!

Anonymous

I think it's safe to say Davey wouldn't like garden gnomes. Lol

Jana Miranda

I love the idea of clearing the trees so the community can once again enjoy the view of the oldest tower. Chateaux are points of pride to families living near them, particularly if the families can trace their roots in the area back several generations. Dan's list of winter chores is getting longer, but job security is a very good thing right now.

Anonymous

Emma Kelly and everyone, Google Fragonard 'The Swing ' it could be Stephanie in a beautiful dress kicking off a shoe whilst swinging from a huge tree 😊

Janese Carstens

I second this! Perhaps our Patron meetup Party can include a work day (or 3 😁)! Think of huge tasks you could get accomplished with so many people. I think a lot of people would have a sense of pride and accomplishment from being able to help with it.

Anonymous

This has made me realise just how addicted I am to La Lande! I was beginning to go a bit crazy without a video!! 😘😘😘

Anonymous

Some really good ideas to spark even more thoughts

Anonymous

Wow! This was full of great insight and suggestions. Thanks for sharing 😺

Anonymous

Such a lot of great ideas and suggestions, can’t wait to see them starting to evolve. Coriander doesn’t like full sun so will do well in part shade and parsley too. 🥰

Ramon

Real magic how exactly the right people are coming to Lalande to offer their gifts and talents and contributing. Can't wait to see Lalande in 5 years. Any great stonemasons out there in the community? Stefanie is needing statues!

Anonymous

I'm imagining the dry moat as a lovely & wild sunken garden!

Anonymous

I love seeing Dan’s attentiveness in this video. We all learn a little bit here and there. Been watching him and Annalise, too, on their Vlogs; and the progress at their place. It makes me happy to know all of you and to share in your progress.

Anonymous

Ryan is a lot of fun, too. And Michael and the Pethericks of course.

Anonymous

As always love an update from Lalande. Great to see and I appreciate the time and effort to make all the vlogs and provide little snippets on here. Thank you. Stephanie! 😁

Anonymous

This was lovely seeing all your ideas coming together ... your vision & their expertise. It’s going to be wonderful. Never mind a ‘fairytale tree’ ...the whole of Lalande is the fairytale come true now I think xx💕

Anonymous

This was so interesting, especially the part about the dry moat! Thanks for putting this up!

Anonymous

Davy is wonderful!!

Anonymous

This video was quite interesting and exciting to thing of all the things you can do with the lovely LaLande grounds. I love the fairytale tree. That would look lovely with little lights🌸🌼

Anonymous

Wow, three videos in one morning, I am so spoilt.

Jane Nunn

Please don't remove all the trees, that would be awful and so sad! especially for the wildlife.. please don't remove all the trees. They are well established. Davy is lovely

Anonymous

Wonderful ideas! Thank you for sharing! I am a new patron and have added this comment to the other video released today but I am desperate to know if you have considered a gray water system for the courtyard plants and possibly the walled garden. Thank you!

Anonymous

How exciting to dream! Bulbs i the spring with a bridge across and a path through the woods. I'll be there!

Anonymous

Thanks for much for providing a behind the seasons video about the dry moat. I'm not sure getting rid of all the trees would make the area nicer. I like the idea of a suspended walking path, that would be something very special. But any decision you make is for the best of the Chateau. We're all behind you, all the way!

Anonymous

How lovely to hear the wonderful ideas for this part of the garden. I’m so interested to see how it develops over time. I wonder if you have deer and sanglier visiting? They will help this area become more like it would have been in the past, once some of the trees have been removed I think.

Anonymous

Stephanie, could you talk more about the irrigation plan for the future gardens. I understand that there are continued issues in the flower garden, after the initial repair. Will more repairs be done this fall or winter so that all is ready for spring planting? These plans all sound so wonderful, and what beauty the spring and summer would bring if these water issues were resolved.

Michelle Morrison

You could even fill the dry moat with a carpet of wildflowers! I think it could be incredible there!

Anonymous

Such wonderful ideas discussed with Davy and Dan Stephanie..exciting times ahead for LaLande

Anonymous

This is great. I’ve often thought about what other garden area and projects could happen around. I just want to come, wander with my sketch pad and dream up lovely garden rooms! Thanks for sharing

Anonymous

Oh I wish I was there. Im already to start cutting down those weed trees😁 I watched this vid several times and am loving your ideas. I can image that once you start getting the garden sorted you could host art events in your garden. Then you could have the sculpture you desire but just not on permanent display😁 This is all so exciting. Im so glad you made it possible for all of us to play a part. 😊😘

Anonymous

I wasn't sure what I thought of idea of removing the trees from the dry moat. Then I looked at the street view on google earth which dated from April 2013 and the trees were much thinner and it does look a lot better. You can see the older part of the chateau and it is impressive. I think if you cleared everything except the cedar of lebanon and the pines on the upper end and maybe two or three of the biggest trees in the middle section it would look really good. The cedar would look more impressive with nothing around it.

Anonymous

This garden designed by Francis Cabot has a spot that is very much like your "dry moat" area at LaLande (they even have a bridge and a tea house in the same sunken spot). I think you would very much enjoy watching this or exploring the garden in pictures if you have not already. (If one has an Amazon Prime account -at least in the USA-, it is available to watch, but here is the trailer on youtube:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx0qhR7OsIE

Wow! A lot of really creative ideas. Could certain sides of the dry moat be terraced and a safe pathway and plants be planted on it? The fairy tree was super cool! I'm looking forward to seeing the area more cleared so we can truly appreciate it's beauty. I love the idea of planted wildflowers and grasses in the bed of the dry moat as well. Anything that is long blooming so you can enjoy it more through the warmer months. A forest filled with blue bells in the spring would be glorious! Absolute fairyland. Would you consider a statue honoring Henry (which means ruler of an estate), the gentle spirit that watches over Lalande? Also one memorializing the poor little boy that drowned in the moat? As I recall, the boy's father encouraged his greiving wife to focus her attention on renovating the chateau to help her move forward after the tragic loss, then there was the terrible fire after that. You said in the vlog that the Chateau was never the same after that. I think honoring those that have been lost and wishing them peace is a lovely and respectful way to end a difficult chapter in the chateau's history, and begin a new one, which you and your family have done, by bringing life, love, and laughter back to the Chateau, and also by bringing so many people together here online to conrtibute to it's restoration. So many beautiful and exciting projects to look forward to. Thank you for sharing this extra footage. <3

Anonymous

Thankyou for sharing these ideas with us Stephanie. I love the ideas that you have for the dry moat. Perhaps planting rhododendrons would add a touch of colour. If you also plant Gunnera it would allow secret hidden paths to evolve underneath their huge leaves. They have in this concept at Trebah gardens in Cornwall. Whatever you decide I’m sure it will be stunning, exciting and wonderful 😊

Anonymous

dry moat = pond or water feature?

Anonymous

coy pond with arched bridge?

Anonymous

I love hearing the discussions and the planning. It gives me something to look forward to. I wonder if the quarry is still viable? i.e. is there stone available on site if you ever needed it on the chateau?

Anonymous

I enjoyed this very much ! I find the discussion very interesting. Honestly, I never knew there was so much detail involved in gardening. I have a sprawling space I need to figure out as well and got several ideas from Davy. Thank you Davy ! :) Now..you think Dan would come on over to America and make it happen ?? lol

Anonymous

Loved this!!!

Anonymous

Love the extra footage! Such wonderful ideas! I like the idea of removing some trees and plants, planting bulbs and seeds then letting nature take its course! Formal and then flowing into natural and wild with view points! Davy is an inspiration and I see he has vision too. True don't go overboard with the statutes and yes, they should have some meaning. Wonderful to have such forward ideas and goals for the future. ~k

Anonymous

This was funny. The statues conversation!! LOL...Davey does not understand Stephanie is trying to create a fairytale, so her ideas, like an entire row of statues, are going to be slightly eccentric. 😃 The combination of a traditionalist like Davey and a dreamer like Stephane could end up being a beautiful thing— as long as he will rein her in just enough, but NOT too much, whilst she is pushing boundaries. Stephanie, you are one of kind!! Love your spirit and the magic you envision!! ❤️🌺❤️

Anonymous

I would love to see a folly/gazebo at the end of that tiny boxwood row. I think Italian Cypress should line it instead of the tiny box woods. I believe the cypress trees could do well there. The folly would be framed by them and what a delightful place to have tea or a romantic dinner/picnic. I don’t know how far it is from the chateau or the chapel and the proposed amphitheater. The dry moat has so many options and once the trees are removed, I think it will tell you what way to go. So exciting!

Anonymous

Stephanie you mentioned having a natural water/swimming area. Can I suggest you look up these Pond guys from America on YouTube. They do work together, Greg Wittstock The alone Guy, Brian from Team Aquascape and Ed The Pond Professor. Their work is amazing and I know they travelled to other countries like Australia. They have also done work for other Vloggers. I suppose it benefits both sides. The work I hav seen them do on YouTube is so beautiful.

Anonymous

What do you think instead of felling so many trees, you make a tree house or two as guesthouses like the one you and your mother stayed in a while back? Extra income and save on hiring people to get rid of the trees? Too much? Just thinking.

Anonymous

Is it possible to get a contact for Davy, I'd love to speak to him about a project I'm working on.

Anonymous

Talk of cutting such old trees just for the sake of the view doesn't' seem right. They do so much for our environment. For instance, "An average size tree produces enough oxygen in one year to keep a family of four breathing".

Anonymous

Yes, good idea to put a formal lawn along the side; it's more level than the back, so better for...CROQUET! I'm pretty sure you promised me croquet for next year, Stephanie, so crack on!

Anonymous

Absolutely loved this video. This is what I'm here for, all the garden talk! Davy is very talented in his work, I'm so happy he is there! I'm sure he will come up with spectacular schemes for Lalande.

Anonymous

Love Tandy Slater's idea of a gazebo at the end of rows of cypress or other evergreens.

Anonymous

Such fantastic plans, and Stephanie’s fantastic imagination just finishes them off. Keep going....and I just want to also say Davy and Dan are wonderful. Great knowledge and patience xx

Anonymous

Love the idea of the dry moat being planted with bulbs ,maybe do a bit at a time have a bulb planting day with everyone helping ,then hot chocolate and marshmallows around the fire pit , so lovely to see things happening in the garden . Like the idea of removing trees so people can see the chateau again ,maybe put up nesting boxes on any trees you don’t cut down .

Anonymous

FINALLY, Michael Potts comes through (and Stephanie remembers) that a NATURAL pool would be lovely. I love to swim, but putting a swimming pool at the Chateau wouldn't be a priority for me; the natural pool would be better. M Potts, I believe took a swim in the moat. Then, of course there will be the lake, once, and if, restored.

Anonymous

I too LOVED this video - I soooo enjoy the backstage extras, most interesting. Great to see Davy in his element able to share so much wisdom off the cuff like that. I am remembering you mentioning his offer to come months ago - his legacy will remain long

Anonymous

I love Davy suggestions! He is very knowledgeable! Let nature's takes it course and keep the fairy tale tree! :)

Anonymous

My LaLande postcard arrived today...a nice treat for this Thanksgiving weekend in Canada. Thank you for this lovely personal touch. It's a joy to be part of the Lalande family and to watch all the shenanigans, fun and progress happening on the estate. Stephanie has said often how amazing it is that her home seems to attract the best, best people and more awesome when their talents fit to exactly what is needed at the time. I picked a bouquet from my garden this afternoon and thought of Marie and the big garden. When I checked the mailbox, voila, a note from the Chateau. Hugs. C

Anonymous

Dan, Davy & Selmar what a dream team for the gardens of Lalande! I already have goosebumps thinking about your dry moat sprinkled with beautiful bulbs... Did Davy suggest where you might put your second fountain? Things are just so exciting at the moment with so many different projects, I honestly don't know how you keep up with everything! Love your work and laughed myself silly at the sight of you rocking the digger in your pjs and yellow wellies. Gold! xx

Anonymous

for the natural pool i recommend this company. love the videos of david pagan butler. and it does not cost the world !http://www.organicpools.co.uk

Anonymous

I think Mummy was doing the filming on this??? I liked how she stepped back as did Stephanie so all could get into the shots. I still can't believe how two Vlog Armatures have become so good at this. Mummy....make sure you brag to your friends that at the age of 79 you having taken on another career.

Anonymous

The "dry moat" looks like a Ha-Ha, which was a landscape feature going back to the 1600s designed to keep livestock out of the formal gardens without obstructing the views to a distant prospect. So removing the trees would likely be approved of by the original landscape designer. The herb garden by the kitchen, you could consider a formal parterre or knot garden (which would be a lovely nod to Stephanie's British heritage). The parts in the shade could be filled with shade loving flowers/vegetables, and the herbs could be grown in the sunnier bits.

Julia Bowman

My Lalande postcard also arrived...thank you very much. ..above photo of the Tower through the trees. ❤

Julia Bowman

Not above photo...a lovely photo!

Anonymous

Very nice video , Davy is so knowledgeable and hope he come back and keeps giving such great recommendations

Anonymous

Davy is such a sweetheart.

Anonymous

ahhh what I wouldn't give to be a part of the garden reno team, I'm handy with a chainsaw. Such wonderful ideas

Anonymous

I really enjoyed this update. Soooo many new projects in the works!

Jodi and Scott Barck

Oh I wish I could help with all three planting. I'm an outdoor girl. I hear everyone talking and have so many ideas. I will give one idea for instant color from a tough plant Proven winners Supertunia Vista Bubblegum. It is just an amazing petunia that grows vigorous and covers with beautiful pink flowers. Gets big and tolerates alot of frost.

Anonymous

What about a walled herb garden as part of the outdoor kitchen?

Anonymous

When it comes to mistletoe you could advertise for someone who is interested in harvesting it and they would come in for free and gather the different areas that you need it removed from. Win-win. You get free labor and they get money from the sale.

Anonymous

So many possibilities!! Can’t wait to see what they decide to do. Not sure of how big the the space is, but maybe this would be a good area to do a sunken statue garden for Stephanie that does not interfere with Davies vision....lol!

Anonymous

Wonderful ideas Davy, I was confused with hedges to nowhere. So many good thoughts to strive for in the garden. Stephanie you have so many plans it make the Chateaux so exciting!

Anonymous

I just love to hear about all the possibilities for the gardens and the surrounding areas! It is going to be beautiful!
