Thank you all for reaching our target of $9000!!! We are so excited, and Selmar is hard at work planning the automatic watering system - I think he's relishing the challenge. It will be a huge relief not to see my mother watering for absolutely hours every day in summer! The progress on the vegetable garden seems incredibly fast now - it's very uplifting and gives me renewed energy to finish every corner of this chateau!

Here's a little gift for you from us all - it's the first of our 'Recipes from the Chateau!'

I have asked Selmar to give you his Grandmother's Apple Cake recipe, which was given to him by his mother. She made this for him for every single one of his birthdays! He has two brother, and whenever one of them was celebrating his birthday, they'd be told to wait in the their bedroom whilst the rest of the family decorated the living room for them! Then , after waiting excitedly, they'd finally be called down to the party room, where everyone would be waiting with this delicious cake. He couldn't bear to celebrate his birthday at Lalande without it, so made it himself for the first time, and it was a Huge Success!!!

Let me know if you try it at home and if it works!

Anonymous

Thank you!! 😋

Anonymous

Ohh lovely I look forward to making this...looked so yum when you were all tucking in. Congrats on reaching the next goal!! Have you thought of doing a Lalande cookbook compiling recipes of you all including from volunteers etc?

Anonymous

Yum... Looks delicious.. x

Anonymous

Thank you so much! I was hoping for this as the cake looked wonderful! ...And thank-you to Selmar for the tango lessons. Both my parents were masters at the tango which they often did around the house for fun... and watching the lessons takes me back decades to the times they danced together.

Anonymous

Shall make the apple cake tomorrow

Anonymous

Thank you so much Selmar!! We will think of you when baking it... and eating it.... thanks to you too Stephanie❤

Anonymous

Oh that looks yummy! I think I'll give it a try this week :) Happy Birthday Selmar and thanks for sharing!!

Anonymous

Thank you. Custard powder is an interesting addition. Can’t wait to try this as apples are still in season for me.

Anonymous

I'll make an apple pie for my 71st birthday today! Family can't be here because of COVID 19, so my husband can eat it all week. Stephanie your patron numbers have skyrocketed since I became one a couple of weeks ago. Good job!!!!!

Anonymous

Thank you so much! I'm thrilled you hit your new target. And thanks to Selmar for sharing his special apple cake with us! I've printed it out and ready to make it soon. :)

Maria Soberanis

Hi fellow patreons! Just a quick question...what is a "cl of water"?? How much is that?

Anonymous

Thank you for the wonderful story of Selmar’s birthdays! May make the pie this weekend.

Anonymous

Thank you so much for the beautiful cake recipe, Selmar and Stephanie!!! And congratulations on reaching $9K!

Anonymous

A cl is a ( centiliter ) unit. So 2cl would equal 0.67628 US ounces. I'm sure you could round up or down.

This first recipe from the chateau is made all the more special by sharing the story of Selmar's birthday traditions. Love the photo of Selmar in the kitchen! I will be baking this together with my husband and think of all of you. I will treasure the collection of recipes curated at the chateau.

Anonymous

What a lovely surprise! Thank you, Selmar and Stephanie! I'm wondering if custard powder is available here in the US, I've never heard of it.

Anonymous

I wish Selmar could stay. He seems like part of the Chateau now. All you need is Percy, Scotman and Mason and viola! :-)

Garrie and Cindy Garrison

How sweet of Selmar to share this! Many happy returns on your special day, Selmar!!! What a blessing he has been to you all. Is there anything he cannot do? Excellent dance teacher! So delighted for Isabelle to have a gardener!!!

Anonymous

congratulations on everything!! especially on the gardener!!

Anonymous

I think you need to do a proper cookbook for Lalonde this Christmas. I would be happy to put it together for you. The cover could be a photo of the Chateau. All the wonderful recipes we see could be created just like the Downton Abby that you got at Christmas. I know the fans would buy it. Isabel could have a section on French cheese. Marie could include her “simple everyday cakes”. Michael could also include his great recipes. Also a section on cocktails is a MUST. What do you think?

Anonymous

Also forgot to mention Selma. He has been such a blessing for the Chateau during this time. Love the cake as well as the tango lessons.

Janese Carstens

It’s available through Amazon. Birds Custard Powder (300g) for just over USD$10. It looks to be similar to instant pudding mix but not quite so thick?

Anonymous

What a treat! Was hoping you would post this! We tried Marie’s roast recipe tonight as well and had a delicious dinner! Looking forward to more recipes! Thank you!

Anonymous

Lovely thank you will try it as soon as possible 😋

Anonymous

Great to see patreon numbers and dollars steadily climbing to 10000

Anonymous

I think that they want to this so an offer of help would be greatly appreciated. If you need help with design and formatting I do a lot of this in my job.

This is a great gift! Thank you Selmar and Stephanie! I look forward to bake the apple birthday cake, and like others have said, a cake with a story behind it is much better, that becomes a treasure. I am sure I am not the only one who smiles happily with the thought of Selmar planning the watering system. Someone over mention a Christmas cook book, great idea. Personally I would love a Lalande coffee table book, a big hardback with beautiful photos and a look at daily life at Lalande, with all the people we've come to like so much. And quotes and little history snippets of course. Oh I cannot wait for the lake to appear! But I won't have to wait very long by the look of things :-) Hurrah!

Anonymous

Congratulations! So exciting to see such swift progress in the garden!

Anonymous

Thank you for the recipe - I am definitely going to give it a go. I wonder if Selma thought he would become a YouTube star the day he arrived at la lande. I can't believe how quick the numbers have shot up.

Anonymous

Congratulations on your 9k what an amazing ride you are all on. Selmar is the man that keeps on giving, so many talents.

Anonymous

Thank you Selmar for sharing this recipe. I have just printed this off and will make this for my birthday on the 1st June and enjoy in my garden with my loved ones!! Thank you x

Anonymous

Thankyou so much Stephanie for the recipe one that I will be trying. It looked delicious. My mother and I enjoy your vlogs and look forward in always watching them so a huge THANKYOU for inviting us into your Chateau lives.

Proper Dutch appel taart! Heel erg bedankt Selmar :)

Laura & Jack

What an incredibly generous thing to do: share a family recipe! People are so generous in sharing their time, talents, gifts and money at this time. It’s because you all deserve it. Was toiling in my garden yesterday... digging out and transplanting Iris. Many times I said “I need a Dan!“ So glad Mummy now will have more help and truly enjoy this lovely space. Like me, she will probably still spend lots of time outdoors with her beloved plants, but she won’t be as tired out at the end of the day. Stay well, and thank you all for making our days a bit brighter!

Anonymous

Thank you so much! I can't wait to try it! I am a new patron and just love living vicariously through your channel. My husband, daughter, and I visited France last year and didn't know about your chateau. Next time we would LOVE to visit. I also love your decorating and fashion sense. Your dresses are all so pretty. Thanks for all your inspiration. Love from Wisconsin!

Happy belated birthday, Selmar. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Kelly Douglas

Wow, how cool! Thank you so much. What is custard powder?

Kelly Douglas

Oh, I just saw that someone else asked the same question. Apparently, it's similar to our instant pudding and can be bought on Amazon.👍😃

Anonymous

This is great ive made it today. Smells great looks good ,ready for pudding this evening. Thank you stephanie ❤

Anonymous

I have Always been intimidated with pies. I’m going to attempt the pie cake.

Is that cooking apples?

Anonymous

Wow what a treat mahalo Selmar for this recipe 🍎🥧I am excited to give it a try. Happy Birthday Selmar and congratulations to hitting yet another goal Stephanie✨🎉🎉🎉🎉 💙🤍❤️ 🏰 🇫🇷⚜️

Laura & Jack

Wow ... that new design is amazing!!

Anonymous

The update looks beautiful, Stephanie! Please thank Selmar and his mother! We will be making the cake as soon as we get custard powder. Here is the states, rather than custard powder, most people use corn starch or tapioca to thicken apple and peach pies.

Anonymous

Imagine a book of La Lande recipes with this beautiful design.....get on it Stephanie !!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous

My son Roscoe (8 years old) are so excited to make Selmars apple cake! We were drooling over it when we watched his party. Sending love.

Lalanders, some fans on YT have become interested in Stephanie's thermomix but it's $1500. I have sent Stephanie's recent episode link featuring the Thermomix to the company telling them she's featured it on her series the last year and a half. Maybe they will give Stephanie a discount code for her fans! If this interests you, I suggest you email them, too! I used the email service@thermomix.us, not sure if the different vendors coordinate across country borders but I hope that they do. If they contact you, Stephanie, dooo~ let us know~ :)

Anonymous

Stephanie bought her thermomix second hand for about 530 euros I think. She does mention it in one of her recent videos.

Has anyone translated the ingredients for Americans? If so, can you share? US Version Pastry 2.7 cups of flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt 7/8 cups butter 1 egg 2cl water Filling 1 1/3 cup bread crumbs 8 apples 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup raisins (is this correct -- the recipe says 6g) 4tsp cinnamon powder 4tsp custard powder

Anonymous

My take on a US Version of the recipe. Can someone tell me if I got it right? Selmar's Apple Cake Pastry 2.7 cups of flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 tsp salt 7/8 cups butter 1 egg 1.3 TBS water Filling 1 1/3 cup bread crumbs 8 apples 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup raisins (is this correct -- the recipe says 6g) 4tsp cinnamon powder 4tsp custard powder

Hi Anita! I’m in the US and just made the cake this morning, haven’t tasted it yet but it looks and smells delicious! And your conversions look right except I think it’s 2.07 cups of flour for the pastry, I did just over 2 cups when I made it and it turned out well. I originally thought the recipe said 2 Cups water for the pastry, but thank goodness I caught that it said centiliters. And I think it should be 60grams raisins, I omitted the raisins b/c my husband doesn’t eat them, but I watched the vlog video before I made the cake and I think Selmar says 60g raisins, watching the video was helpful! Good luck with your baking! 😊🥧 and thank you to Stephanie and Selmar for sharing the recipe!

Anonymous

Dear Kari and Anita, if the above is the correct conversion than I'll do a version of the recipe card in US measurements. And I'll adjust the raisins to be the correct amount. Thanks, Cheryl

Anonymous

Thank you Selmar it was delicious.....easy to make and loved the custard powder in it. Gorgeous with a nice dollop of vanilla ice cream.....

Anonymous

I got roughly the same. Though my flour is 2 1/3 cups.. also the water can be 4 tsp and it’s easier to measure ;) Also thanks for the tip on the raisin typo. That had me scratching my head as 1 raisin =1 gram (or that’s what they told us in school)!

Anonymous

My husband made this yesterday really delicious we didn’t have custard powder😟 so used cornflour and vanilla essence next time we will be fully prepared Thank you Selmar.

Anonymous

Americans: You can get Custard powder from Kroger-affiliated shops and on Amazon. You can also use tapioca as a thickening agent, but the custard powder has a unique taste. Also, watch out for the size conversions. Teaspoons differ between the US and the UK/Europe. Google has a nice conversion. They are NOT equivalents.

Anonymous

Thank you Selmar for sharing , and Happy belated Birthday 🥂

Anonymous

wow cant wait to try this, lovely layout x

Anonymous

I can not wait to make this. I will need to go on a quest for custard powder. xx

Daniel Hammond

Ohhhhh! Selmar can even cook!

Anonymous

I’m going to try this too! A new take on an old favorite🌹

Anonymous

What a wonderful and special thing to share! Thank you!

Anonymous

The only thing I don’t think is correct in the recipe is the 6 grams of raisins! Think it must be 60 grams.

Jessie Cherry

Today I am baking a Jamaican Ginger cake!! I never heard of them till watching your vlogs!
