Ben, that hot take got me riled up at work I had to listen to it a 2nd time. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad by any means. I loved the question. I had a full blown conversation with myself at work with no one around and caused me to miss some of the conversation you guys were having. Having listened to it a 2nd time I'm still of the same opinion/answer. Isn't this something you (as in all of you) can fix? I don't want to add any unnecessary workload onto anyone, but you are your own boss (I think I hear Isla use this at least once every time GOTY's come up). Sure you're trying to keep up with new releases and whatnot, but Huber said it himself. He'll get to them when he get to them (which is ironic because he was the one always bringing up the zeitgeist which I'm sure a lot of your audience would love to be apart of) and then you have a show such as this where you're constantly bringing in different games (new and old alike). Great talk though. L&R. PS. It's hard trying to catch you live, especially being here in Detroit. Hope to see you in KoF15 if you aren't too busy with Elden Ring (take your time with it lol). I'm not huge into the souls games and even I'm gonna take my time with it. Anyway, peace and blessings

(I know, I know...nice essay but hear me out) I really have to disagree with part of the diminishing returns comment about combat. It does eventually cap off (and then gives you a little more at the end) when you get into combat encounters after having everything unlocked for so long but before that, having access to all the other abilities is very fun. Play how you want to play, but personally I found different later ability combos way more fun and effective. Such as Rocket's gravity bomb being extremely more effective at CC than Groot's starting ability. These all kind of reminded me of the more fun part of a MOBA team fight could be. And during a successful Huddle, they let you go nuts with the abilities because cooldowns reset quickly which I believe they don't really explain. The issue is that it all is too simple for too long and you can still get through most everything easily without having to experiment. I think that's an issue for a lot of games for some people. Like NierA having no grading system so spamming one move can be effective throughout a normal playthrough. Or DMC5 normal mode being too easy so people don't care to try cool combos. A lot of encounters in GOTG aren't particularly all that unique and clever, but mostly only sticking to the first rotation of abilities seems like it would add to the tedium of them. If they had went with an ability system with some more depth to the upgrades and customization, combat could have had been way better. It also doesn't help when animations and impact during combat are a bit jank. At those times, I feel like leaning into the character action genre would help. I do hope people experiment with the abilities, it could help a lot with their enjoyment of the game. But again, it does cap off when there is nothing else to upgrade. The perfect dodge perk is always fun though, but yeah most perks aren't that exciting (mat locator and elemental ammo are a must though).
