I’m back. I’m 41. Time to get on with the rest of this year! Thanks to Amanda for scoopin’ it up last week. We have a lot of logistical stuff to go over today. Our GOTYs are tomorrow, and it’ll be a full day of talking about the best games from last year, so I’ll go through how all that will roll out. We announced EZX last week, and have some expected concerns about exactly what to expect from that event. We also have two weeks worth of business questions to get through. Let’s get to it.

DISCLAIMER: I take questions from the post comments on the previous week’s episode here on Patreon. You can ask a business-related question which I may answer live, or a personal question which I may answer below. If your business question was not answered live, I either replied to it in the comments, or referenced the answer in a recent episode. Feel free to inquire why your question wasn't included, or ask the same question a second time if you think I may have missed it. I will edit your comment/question before reading it live to ensure the show moves as quickly as possible. I typically grab all the questions by midnight (PT) the night before each episode, and will leave a comment when I’ve finished collecting them.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

MEGAN LINART - What are your thoughts on Saturday Night Fever? JONES - I’ve only seen it once in my life, when I was a teenager. I couldn’t tell you much about it other than it had much less to do with dancing than I had expected. I’m definitely due to revisit it. I wonder where I can access it most easily?

ALEXANDER ZYRYANOV - I hope your hand is fine and by the time you'll read this you will not remember what it's about. JONES - It felt better the next day and I totally remember.

MORGAN MOHALLA - What direction would you like to see Pokemon take (I believe this series is stagnating)? Personally, I would love to see a Yakuza style Pokemon adventure where you are in one large open city, you are not trying to win competitions but rather have a more unique goal like earning enough money through underground gambling/fighting to save a family members home (Happy Gilmore style). Or you could be an elderly character who wants to run a business with Pokemon that provide the fire for cooking, muscle for construction, electricity for powering high demand machines, etc. In fact the whole goal of the game could be just to convert a sleazy (Gotham style) city into a utopia with the help of your Pokemon. Your thoughts? JONES - I’ve thought less about the story behind the game, and more about how to make the world more interesting. I think the gyms are too easy, and the trainers in general are oddly placed and not as competitive as I’d expect them to be. Regardless of the theme, I’d like to see more care put into how the NPCs are placed within it. I think they could do a much better job of allowing these strangers to tell the story of the world, instead of waiting until big story moments to cram all the plot in.

ANDY GOERGEN - Every so often, I find myself rewatching reaction videos to the Breath of the Wild trailer from January 2017 - the one shown at the Switch Reveal event. I'm not sure if I've ever had a stronger emotional connection to a game trailer before. Do you have a trailer that impacted you similarly? What do you remember about that 2017 BOTW trailer? JONES - I’ll be honest, I was pretty burnt out on the weird trailer we got leading up to that point. I was surprised at all the crazy locations I was seeing, and new characters they introduced, but I had already set my expectations for how big that game was going to be by the weird glimpses we had seen previously. I don’t remember that trailer blowing me away at the time. I think it took Bloodworth, Damaini, Bosman, etc. to remind me how much it really showed.

Regarding the Saturday Night Fever question, there is a website called www.justwatch.com that shows you all available services to watch a particular film on, and how much it costs.

Yes, read out Twitch sub names. This is financial support from a dedicated viewer base on Twitch, whose platform encourages people getting recognized for their contributions. You can just make a point to do it every so often and rattle off the list with a "thank you for subbing" if you don't want to interrupt things as they come up. Any viewer that complains needs to acknowledge that showing appreciating towards voluntary financial support is just a decent thing for a crowdfunded media platform to do. Especially for more casual supporters, when you acknowledge subs it gives other people incentive to sub themselves and also makes the person more willing to resub the following month. Hypothetically somebody might have a choice between your channel and somebody else's with a free Prime sub and if you never acknowledged the fact that they picked your channel, they will just pick a different one to give it to next month where they at least get a "thank you"

Hey Mr. Jones! Recently, I was watching a video from Maximillian Dood about why Final Fantasy VII matters to so many people, and he used both the Final Bosman segment talking about the PSX announcement about the original coming to PS4 as a port, and then watching the famous GameTrailers reaction of the Remake. It got me to thinking that while I’m sure he didn’t ask to revisit this old content, it was awesome to see someone reference content from another group. So I wanted to ask you, while Easy Allies focus primarily on yourselves (as it should), do you think it wouldn’t hurt if EZA calls attention to other content or videos pertinent to discussions when appropriate? I DON’T mean things like Preview or Review coverage, as the traffic should be to EZA first before viewing elsewhere of course, but what I’m talking about is evergreen topics like the referenced FF VII topic. While I, among others, always enjoy collaborations and really enjoy the Friday of E3 for that reason, seeing people praise, reference, and otherwise discuss other content is fascinating, especially because it’s done only in a positive light. Thanks for reading my question and have a wonderful rest of your day! Cheers! P.S.: The reason I asked my meetings question was because while you reference them to let us know when you’re having them and giving a rough heads-up what some topics will be discussed, it’s an aspect of the business that isn’t discussed as much as the many other facets. And you got me: Initially, I had a smile when you started to answer the first part, but legitimately was TERRIFIED when you finished the third and final part with, “I don’t like your tone.” Not until you cracked your smile. You are an excellent actor. Duly noted to not ask a meeting related question again. <=-) QUESTION: When pertinent, do you think EZA would reference content from others to help not only further points had during evergreen discussions, but also draw awareness to creators or people the Allies are a fan of? This is inspired by Maximillian Dood using Final Bosman and GameTrailers reactions surrounding Final Fantasy VII’s port and remake announcement.

Hello Brandon. Have you watched Ian's Synth Stream? If you didn't can you please watch 30 seconds from somewhere in the middle and share your thoughts? If not, that’s totally fine, just skip this question.

I was listening to your comments regarding EZX and some of your thought processes regarding the event, and a couple of question rose to mind: Would you be willing to consider having some sort of community day (a day to celebrate the community as well as invite them to join along in whatever events are happening that day) and also have a separate "Anniversary Celebration" event? In my mind those two ideas are very different and having (A very small part of) the community celebrated/appreciated via this EZX event seems different than what many others in the EZA community would like to see as a "Anniversary Stream" / "Anniversary Event". To me, something akin to the "PHASE FOUR" announcement seemed more like the thing that would be saved for an anniversary event. Announcements / New shows / New partnerships: these things along with maybe some cool skits and videos produced for the event would, I think, make many more people excited about what the potential for the next year of EZA could be. Am I off my rocker, Jones? Have these thoughts crossed the minds of the Allies?

Jones I have just one question(sorry about last week). With tax season just starting how do you manage it? Is it Blood in quick books or do you guys have a CPA? Also curious about any fun things you guys were able to write off.

Jones, hearing your brief preview of the "Ocarina of Time is the best video game of all time" editorial made my month, My question is simply, how frequently is it appropriate to remind you to do this? I need to hear the long form version. L&R.

With Pokemon Silver streams nearing their end, are there plans to fill that slot. Will another ally be showing someone through a series they aren't familiar with, similarly to Brandon plays Pokemon and the silver streams? Will you and Kyle continue streaming in that slot with a different game? What will I do with my Thursday evenings?

Anonymous

In regards to announcing subs on stream I think acknowledgement is appropriate and important given that this is a crowd funded organization, however it bothers me when I see hosts so focused on subs that it disrupts the flow of natural conversation or worst the host just completely loses their train of thought. I think overall EZA streamers do a good job of striking a fine balance.

Hey Brandon, what has become of Amanda McKay and Daniel Keiser? L&R.

Brandon, what do you think about doing a show about gaming hardware? My thoughts go to it being a spoof of something like Tool Time. Huber does the Tim shenanigans while Ben is the straight laced Al. A name that immediately jumps to my mind is Huber’s Hardware Hideout aka Triple H. Congrats on the recent birthday and becoming a father(that ones late I know but I just got back to being able to be a patron since you had him). L&R

Hello Brandon, I was talking with a friend and I was informed that 3/21 is a Disney Annual Pass blackout day for many. In fact all Saturdays between March and May are blackout days. As an AP holder yourself, I feel you understand the most why someone who spent money on an AP might not want to spend more money for a blackout date ticket. Was the team aware of this issue and do you plan to address it? L&R Austin

How did you decide on who would be playing in the MTG tournament? For example, Ian isn't playing and I thought he actually had experience with MTG. On the other hand, Blood is in the tournament who seems to have no experience with it. (Or am I misremembering?)

Hi Brandon. You may have answered this but how did the RE7 get snuck into the game of the year video at the beginning instead of RE2? Just an oversight on the script/edit?

Anonymous

Hello Jones, I know that there isn’t any real solution for this but I still find the process of voting for something you haven’t played or only put a few hours in for GOTYs pretty weird. For example, you voted for Sekiro over RE2 for GOTY even though you stopped playing it because RE2’s story disappointed you. But had you only played a couple of hours from RE2, would you have voted for it instead? Again, I’m not really expecting a solution or a change regarding this. I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Hi Brandon, I can’t find the audio version of this CoJ in my podcast feed. Is it coming later, or isn’t there one this week? L&R Lieven

Hi Brandon, I think the idea of EZX sounds great, and am wishing you guys the best from over here on the east coast. While I can't attend myself, I had some thoughts regarding ESX I'd pass along, for your consideration. 1) Eight player games might be able to get more attendees involved. As you mentioned last week, Smash Bros is an obvious example, but instead of having one Ally and 3 attendees, you could do 4 v 4, or 2 v 6, etc. Another example could be a Halo LAN setup across two consoles to increase the number of simultaneous players. Games that offer quick drop-in/drop-out capabilities would allow you to filter through many attendees who would like to play, and keep everyone engaged. 2) An off-Twitch setup? In reference to Noah's concerns last week, and as you identified, some people may not be comfortable playing on stream alone, or would like it to play with a friend. Is it feasible, to have a separate setup next to the main one that is not broadcast on Twitch? Take Overcooked for example - two allies could play with two attendees on stream, but a second setup could be set up nearby where another two allies could play with others who don't necessarily want the pressure of being watched by people on the internet. I think for many, a large part of the appeal of the event is getting the chance to play and interact with you guys, and not necessarily also be featured on stream, so this may help to alleviate some concerns while also boosting the number of attendees who can participate. 3) Do you intend to bring your own game consoles/controllers to ESX? It may be worthwhile to bring some extra controllers just in case! Lastly, and I sincerely apologize for such a long post, but I would not be so quick to write off Jackbox as a viable option for EZX. It is the only game where everyone could participate as a live audience member via their cell phones. You wouldn't necessarily bring up an audience member for the stream, but it could work as a finale-type game where everyone could be involved together. As always thank you for your time, congrats on 4 years, and best wishes for 2020! -- Jon

Hey Brandon, how are you doing? So, I just finally finished watching the GOTY discussions (which I really enjoyed. Top EZA betrayals of the decade: Huber cutting Judgment from narrative category), and I have a few questions about some parts of the whole process. 1) How do you pick the categories? Like, I know that you guys said that you won't be doing genre specific categories a few years back, but we still have shooter and RPG in there (and platformer). So if it's based on how many good games we saw in a genre in that year, then I have to ask, why no best action/action adventure game for 2019? In a year with DMC5, Sekiro and Astral Chain (and even Control and Bloodstained) it felt like having an action game category would make sense. Is there a reason as to why you guys didn't do it? 2) I know you guys probably did it to make it feel smooth (and cut down the time), but I feel like a big part of the charm for these bigger videos come from the banter among the allies and can't help but feel a bit of that was taken away with the clear transitions (in some cases you could hear people talking and getting cut off), so maybe for next year you could go back to having everything included? 3) This is not a criticism against the way you do GOTYs, but more against the mindset that I've seen being brought up in regards to games being represented by other allies, which is something that was talked about in this very episode as well. Something like Judgment just easily got cut from best narrative simply because enough people didn't play it. Now I'm not saying that every game should be played by everyone, because that's just not possible. I'm not even saying that Judgment was robbed of anything, that's just an example that is fresh in my mind. But when you have a developer/series that puts out new entries at such a consistent rate as (in this example) a studio like RGG does, and they manage to keep their quality (and even improve on it), is it unfair to expect people to at least try their game even if it is just for a few hours, when it comes to these types of awards? Now, I'm legitimately doubting myself on this point, so do you think this is a reasonable expectation to have? (tbh I'm not sure if this isn't just my bias speaking since I like niche games that don't get much recognition) Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I would love to get your unfiltered opinion on these questions, especially the third point, no matter how harsh they might seem. Thanks and as always love and respect. P.S: "She had a hairier bush" "the most uncanny thing is when Kim starts talking about this lego expansions" I was legit rolling on the floor lmao

First off: Thanks for all the work you and the other allies put into the GOTY-content. It was fun to watch the discussions leading to your decisions. I did not catch all of it so watching the actual GOTY video was not spoiled for me. It was cut very well - as expected from your content. Just was a bit dissapointed about the unfortunate choice at the end to que Devil Trigger with a clip of Devil May Cry 5 right after "Our game of the year is". In retrospect, would you cut it differently now? Did it just seem right from the beginning? It seems a lot of viewers (myself included) got baited by the way this part was presented and left a little disapointed with the actual winner (because it seems like a troll-move). Since I know you take GOTYs very seriously (hence hours of debating) I know that this was not intentional to trick people. Just interested in your view when editing a video like this and the thought procress behind those choices.

Jones, thanks for a great game of the year stream. I managed to watch all the content in a timely fashion and just wanted to say it was very entertaining. My question today is about the coverage of two games which are Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Persona 5 Royal. I just finished Tokyo Mirage Sessions and think it is a really good game that didn’t get the recognition it deserved because it was only on Wii U originally. I didn’t see any coverage of the game, and figured this was because it was a port but just wanted to make sure I didn’t miss it. I also wanted to ask if you guys are reviewing/covering Persona 5 Royal. I know technically it isn’t a new game, but if it’s anything like Persona 4 Golden there will be a lot of new content.

Hola Brandon, It’s Thursday night and I’ve finally finished the 2019 Awards deliberation video and wanted to say thank you all for putting that together. I don’t have a question but a concern regarding how using the Premiere option on YouTube is utilized. Originally wasn’t a fan because I recall trying to watch something (perhaps an early Mysterious Monsters?) and it didn’t allow me to rewind while it was still live. This concern was brought up on Twitter on Tuesday before the 2019 talks were set to air, and someone mentioned that isn’t an issue anymore and I was relieved. I knew I couldn’t sit there and listen to the whole thing but figured I’d at least watch while I can, and then catch up later. Below are some of the points that are still concerning: 1) Yes, you can pause, but if you pause it while you were live and caught up, hitting play again will auto catch you up and you’ll miss everything from when you paused to where the video is currently at. This means you have to try and rewind to where it was. 2) I found that it does allow you to move the red play line in order to scrub back to a section you want to see and then pause. This will pause it, but only as long as you leave the app open. The moment you close and re-open, it catches you up live again. And by close, I mean fully, not leave on as a background app. 3) At this point, I figured well....I’ll just pay attention to the time of the video and come back to that point. The problem is Premiere seems to be subtracting from the total time when the video starts. Five minutes into the video it said -5 minutes, but when I came back to it 10 minutes later, that exact same spot now said -15 minutes. This meant I couldn’t use the timestamp to follow it because it would be altering while the video was still going on. Basically, what I’m getting at, is that the Premiere option feels like it gives you one of two options. Either you’re able to watch the entire thing in one go, or just wait til the whole thing is done and watch it then, which is what I had to do. Maybe Premiere works better for smaller pieces of content like a Mysterious Monsters, Box Peek, etc., but for something like 7+ hours, I was essentially locked out of it. I’m sure this isn’t something many people were bothered by, but I thought it was important you knew of some of the shortcomings of Premiere on YouTube for long content. Thanks again to all the Allies for what they brought to the table in that video and can’t wait to watch the personal top 10’s video. Amor y Respeto!

Since you and Kyle decided not to go after the additional legendary Pokemon in Silver Squad (a decision I agree with it) it might at least be neat to have Kyle show you pictures of what they look like. Consider doing that next week on stream?

Hello Big Daddy Jones! I really like to hear the Allies speculate. Discussions in which you are creative and dream up possible game design directions are a lot of fun. My criticism is, that this is almost always about potential new Smash Brothers characters. When you recently discussed possible new settings for the next GTA, I realized how much I crave such discussions for other games than Smash. While I don't want to take the Smash speculations away from anybody, I would also love to hear more discussions like "What innovation does Mario Kart 9 need, to push it to the next level?", "What setting could the next Bioshock take place in?", or "What new mechanic could justify a Portal 3?" I know that you personally are not moderating any of the podcasts, but you are my man on the inside. ps: (Don't read this part out on stream!!!) Next Thursday is episode 200 of the EZA podcast! Might be a good opportunity to prank Kyle, or cook up something special. :)

Heya Jones, Oh, okay. I guess that's just how it is. I mean...anyway, doesn't matter. But if Phase 4 of Easy Allies was a flower girl from London who learned to drop her Cockney accent, which would it find worse: the guy who sings about how much he hates women or the guy who sings about being a stalker?

Hello Brandon, I was curious if there was any plans to have any merchandise available at the Meet and Greet, be it limited edition ones or in general? Sometimes when I watch the Allies, I see them wear merch that are not available on your Shops, was that from previous events or just limited edition shirts? Thank you, L&R.

Hello again Brandon, Another question regarding the Disney Trip: You, of course, are no stranger to Mega64 Gamedays; the annual trip to Disneyland Resort for Mega64 fans. Unofficial Theme days have always been a thing for Disney Parks but, unlike other events, Mega64 actually likes to ride the rides together as a whole group. To the uninitiated, instead of just roaming the park in small groups, the large Mega64 group will mostly stick together and, in what could best be described as a massive raid, all enter the standard ride queue at the same time, foregoing the Fastpass system. Gamedays has existed before the addition of Maxpass, and even then, the expectation that everyone would spend the money on a Maxpass was unreasonable. For Disneyland newbies: the Maxpass system allows you to get Fastpasses through your phone, but cost an additional $15 (Also included are digital ride photos and cast photogrpaher photos). The Easy Allies Disneyland meetup might not be as large as Gamedays, and it could make raiding rides with Fastpasses reasonable, but I have my reservations too. My question relating to this is that do you plan to include ride raids for the Easy Allies Disneyland trip, and would your recommend getting Maxpass, whether or not we ride raid? L&R Austin

Mr. Jones May we dig into habits for a moment? What are the good habits that EZA needs to be more efficient and entertaining in 2020? What are the habits that need to be set aside for the same sake? Who in the Allies has the best and worst habits (your personal opinion)? Since it takes additional energy and work to form habits, is that an investment you can afford to pursue? Respectfully, Morgan Mohalla

Hey Jones, I know there are a couple of Star Trek fans amongst the Allies, so I've gotta ask; what are the odds of a spoiler mode for Picard? I know it might be a bit early to make that call but I just wanted to throw the idea out there cause it's something I'd love to see... and I know it's not an easy ask, but if both you and Amanda could be on the panel that would be amazing.

Well Jones it finally happened. The podcast producers list that Patreon spits out has finally moved me away from the last couple names. It's been a good multi-year run! :] I'm sure Culinary Stud and Michael Yao also found nice new homes as well.

With EZX (Year 4) being in a new location this year at the Anaheim Hilton, I was inquiring on weather the Allies will return to having a post-show afterparty similar to Year 1? After the Year 1 concert, the Allies and attendees walked to a close-by hotel bar and chatted with Allies for post- show cocktails and brews. Year 2 came and since it was on a Sunday local bars on campus were closed early. For Year 3, given the behind the scenes chaos w/ USC that was soon later revealed, I could understand it not being a priority. But since EZX is *IN* a hotel *AND* has a bar, it could be quite the alternative for attending 21+ Allies that find a Disneyland ticket too expensive for them. It also wouldn't make EZX attendees choose between watching the stream on stage and chatting with the free Ally that is not currently on stage. Just a thought. Love & Respect.

Hi, Jones. Sorry for the many questions for the last Cup of Jones. My brain didn't process that it was too many questions. I was thinking they were gonna be mostly "yes" and "no" answers, but hearing you answer each one, I realized it was too many. I'm very sorry about that. I will take some time off from asking questions, unless there's a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X I want to ask. However, before I take a break and since asking after the Oscars 2020 will be pointless, I wanted to ask you two personal questions with very simple answers, no need to expand upon why. This is the list of the 9 nominees for the Oscars 2020's "Best Motion Picture of the Year": 1917 Ford v Ferrari Jojo Rabbit Joker Little Women Marriage Story Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Parasite The Irishman Which is your favorite/best one - from the movies you've watched? Do you believe Joaquin Phoenix should win the "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role" for Joker? List of the 5 nominees for the Oscars 2020's "Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role": Antonio Banderas (Pain And Glory) Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) Adam Driver (Marriage Story) Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) I haven't watched them all, so just choose from the ones you have. L & R PS. Before I forget, you're all going to stream Grand Theft Auto: Vice City this week - one of my favorite games of all time and my favorite GTA, even if GTA 5, 4 and San Andreas are technically superior. I'm a child from the 80's, so the soundtrack and call backs for the culture, TV shows, easter eggs, etc really impacted me. I remember spending hours just listening to the music. I will try my hardest to be live with you guys in chat. Good luck, Mr. Vercetti!

Hey Jones. Can you consider adjusting the Werehog point rewards in Twitch chat? Specifically the option to highlight messages, which is way to cheap at 1,000 Werehogs. I don't even watch all of the streams, and despite not spending any Werehogs, I currently have 75,350 thousand accumulated already. That's 75 possible highlighted messages from me alone. I'm not asking for you to disable the feature, just to make it more expensive. Also, can you explain why the Q&A submission post stopped accepting submissions early this month?
