We made a big announcement this morning! Next month we’re joining the Roost sales network, and before the end of the month we’ll be saying goodbye to our regular sponsors of the Easy Allies Podcast and Frame Trap. There are a lot of steps to this transition, and several reasons why we’ve made this choice, so there is a lot to cover in this episode alongside the usual batch of business questions. Instead of doing an editorial at the end of today’s episode, I’m going to spend a bit of time at the top going over the what, how, and why of Roost. In short, we’re really excited about it and we hope you will be too.

DISCLAIMER: I take questions from the post comments on the previous week’s episode here on Patreon. You can ask a business-related question which I may answer live, or a personal question which I may answer below. If your business question was not answered live, I either replied to it in the comments, or referenced the answer in a recent episode. Feel free to inquire why your question wasn't included, or ask the same question a second time if you think I may have missed it. I will edit your comment/question before reading it live to ensure the show moves as quickly as possible.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

MORGAN MOHALLA - Thanksgiving is just around the corner....What are you most thankful for this year and what side dishes are you excited for? JONES - I’m most thankful for my beautiful son Milo. And the studio, of course. As far as Thanksgiving dinner goes, I’m all about the stuffing. Get gravy on it and get it in my face.

MATT BROOKBANK - Since you're a Disney fanatic, I wonder what your thoughts are on Disney + now that it's launched. JONES - Amanda and I are totally obsessed. We’ve made it through 2 episodes of both The Mandalorian and The Imagineering Story, Aladdin, the first 25 minutes of Newsies, and last night we watched Star Wars Episode IV for the first time together. I’m excited to watch the first Guardians of the Galaxy again. I don’t think I’ve seen it a second time. It’s a little glitchy on Apple TV, but there’s so much good stuff in there. I’m a bit overwhelmed.

KYLE LEE - With the release of the new Sonic trailer, I have a question that I think is uniquely suited to you as both a trailer connoisseur and games man. Do you think it's possible that the bad Sonic design was intentional, to get people riled up, and then happy when the real design is revealed? JONES - I think that’s way more elaborate of a plot than I would ever give Hollywood credit for. That could backfire so spectacularly, and there are so many people involved, that it would be very hard to keep it under wraps. I think they goofed and got lucky. But I like your imagination!

COSMIC CROWN - There's a Youtube creator I follow who goes by B-Mask who's argued that video games and theatre have a lot in common with each other, arguably (in his view) more so than with film and television. Additionally, he's also drew a similar comparison with theme parks as well. As someone with a theatre background and as an avid theme park fan yourself, I was curious what your perspective on these views are, and what you think about the commonalities between games and theatre/theme parks vs film/television are. JONES - Wow, someone could write a whole book on this, I think. There are lots of elements you could mention, but I think one of the big ones is that in theater and in theme parks, you become the camera. Just like how you control your perspective when you’re playing video games. So you can frame the action as you see fit. The Imagineering Story (on Disney+) covers this a bit. They always keep it in mind when introducing people to new areas.

Question about Merch: You mentioned that the old merch will sell until its stock is out then it's gone and only the new Roost merch will be available. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Spreadshirt doesn't carry stock but instead prints the shirts as orders come in. Which is why I can still order a Lars Had Grain shirt even though that hasn't been relevant since the first week of EZA. Will you shut down that store all together when you switch?

Anonymous

Morning Jones! Regarding the exciting news about EZA partnering with The Roost for podcast sponsors and merchandising, I'm curious about how this will help to spurn the creation of new merchandise more regularly. Will the Allies suggest t-shirt or mug ideas to a merch contact at Rooster Teeth and they come up with a design that you'll all approve? Do you guys have a process setup yet? Again, just curious, and VERY much looking forward to investing in more EZA garb. L&R, Brian

EasyAllies

Correct. Fangamer will be able to keep selling inventory, but Spreadshirt will be shut down when Roost merch becomes available. -Bloodworth

Hey Mr. Jones! With the internet outage causing such a disruption to not only the reactions of X019, but also affecting Weekly Hunts and Silver Squad, I was curious if the average week at EZA has openings for potential reschedule opportunities for all future unexpected stream problems. Or, because of the nature of all the recording and editing capacity and volume, is it impossible to find windows to reschedule such things? I understand this doesn’t apply to live reactions like X019 or E3, but more in the mind of the regularly scheduled programming. Thanks as always for taking my question, have a wonderful rest of your day and a very Happy Thanksgiving! Cheers! QUESTION: In the event of internet outages, does EZA’s average weekly schedule have openings for reschedule opportunities for regularly scheduled streams, or because of all the work that takes place when NOT live, is the option automatically to cancel streams to not affect the rest of the work week?

Anonymous

About Merch. PLZ, could you provide a coupon or special discount on spreadshirt.com? I would like buy some Easy allies merch from there before "the shutdown". Thanx.

Anonymous

I have no idea how hard it is but legit if you can talk to these Roost people and find a way to get a physical release of Box Peek similar to how Red Vs Blue has been done I am all in 100% day one special edition

You've never watched Episode IV with Amanda? How Jones? How?!

VGJunky

Just make sure you get out and continue to assuage any fears for people that maybe don't like change - direct them to CoJ or encourage them to ask questions. Probably worth mentioning it as an upcoming change in group stream or in each of the podcasts and referring them to the Patreon post for more details People are funny that way, you'll probably have to repeat yourself on the topic many times and still many of them will have concerns about creative freedom and maintaining the EZA vibe

Personally I am super excited to hear the Allies are making such a big step forward in the business/marketing side of things that makes it all more comfortable for you. I hope Roost Network really does wonders for you. Big congrats! Question: During or after things settling down with the shifts in Patreon and the Roost Network changeover, will there be another round of revision in what is offered at each Patreon tier? (Across the board and not just the top of it?) If so, are you able to share those plans?

Anonymous

Oh awesome! Just heard the part where y’all are also letting Roost handle merch! I was looking for a EZA shirt/hoodie, but EVERY review on there said DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM HERE. And so I was super bummed.

Hi Jones! With a new Half Life game announced for VR, does Easy Allies plan to buy a Valve Index? I know that you technically could play it with other VR headsets, but are you willing to make the investment to review the best possible version of the game, "as intended"? You could also use it to review, play or stream other VR games in the future. But where would you put it? Would you install the sensors in the streaming space, and move the couches when needed? It would be a hassle, but then again, don't you have the studio to do ambitious things that otherwise wouldn't be possible? ---- not part of the submission anymore: I would give a few bucks in a "Better Stuff Before Half Life" stream :P (srsly)

Hey Jones, I could be mistaken, but Mysterious Monsters is possibly the only show that has a credits sequence to show all involved in a project and their roles. While I understand that it is also a widely reaching project, it made me wonder about certain things like if one of the Allies writes the music intros for things like Achieve it Yourself, whether it's royalty free or composed by an Ally, and who works on the intro graphics. Reviews and other videos such as Don't Skip will clarify who wrote and edited a specific show, but it makes me curious about a lot of the behind the scenes work. Is this something that could be given more attention or implementation to give credit to people who create those parts of different projects? Is it something the other Allies are less concerned with? Love and Respect, Brian from Happy Gaming

Hey Jones! I know somebody had mentioned last week about you guys possibly making a list for the official Easy Allies top games of the decade. I thought this was very exciting and I was thinking that if you do decide to make a list, would you consider doing a one time top 10 video for your top games of the decade? I am by no means suggesting brining back the Top 10 countdown series as a regular show again, but maybe as a once in a blue moon type of thing for special occasions (top EZA games of all time perhaps?) What are your thoughts on this? Thanks Jones!

Hello Jones My question relates to how exactly the new ads will be introduced in the podcast. Here are two possibilities I have in mind A) You guys do the podcast as usual, you read the ads live in the middle of the recording. This ad read is then edited out of the ad-free release. B) A ad read recorded at a different time (possibly by you, at the booth) is spliced in the middle of the podcast. Option A presents some issues for the ad-free audience. A live ad read can change the flow and vibes of the podcast. It could introduce some fun bit. It could get referenced later. That could mean that the ad-free audience would possibly be missing something. I hereby suggest option B as the smoothest way of introducing ads without disrupting view experience for us patrons. What do you think? This is extremely nitpicky and might be a non issue after all is said and done but it's something that I was thinking about. L&R

Hey Jones! Firstly, I just want to say congratulations on the new partnership with Roost. I love seeing all of you find new ways to financially support yourselves while delivering all of us fantastic content. I have never been more excited about being a patron of Easy Allies. I am also looking forward to seeing how the integration of the new advertising, marketing, and merchandizing is implemented into Easy Allies. Question: now, about Huber reviewing shenmue 3... Juuust kidding ;-) . Real Question: while it sounds like the goal with the partnership with Roost is to take advantage of their merchandising and advertising expertise, are there any thoughts or future plans of taking advantage of their marketing expertise? As in, consulting with them regarding what it might look like to push your own content through their advertising? I know you briefly discussed what it might look like to push just Box Peek via advertising if the other allies were on board, but I think you could go well beyond just Box Peek, especially when wanting to push special events like your E3 coverage. No big drama Jones, Roost sounds great if it improves your pipeline.

Hello, Brandon. I’m sorry that I’m giving you another non-positive feedback, and I definitely don’t want to make this a habit. However I have some concerns about ad-free versions of podcasts: 1. This one is personal. I actually love Podcast Halftime and Caught in the Frame Trap and I never ever skipped those segments. Sometimes I even rewatch them if they stand out (like when you spoke in Batman’s voice during Easy Allies Podcast #81). So for me a version without ads means an incomplete podcast, and this will incentivize me to ignore the benefits of the early access tier. I also hope that ad-free version will not have any replacement for the ad segment, because otherwise it will be harder for me to consume all of your shows which I want to keep doing. 2. Another version means extra work for the editors and/or podcast producers. Also this means a lot of extra work for Bloodworth, who will need to upload more videos, manage "Exclusives" list at easyallies.com and most importantly go through another list of comments and possibly answer to the same question twice. I’m concerned that this will impact your production pipeline and I’m not sure that it’s worth it, since skipping an ad segment in a recorded video with timestamps isn’t that hard. 3. Views on your public videos will decrease which will slightly devalue your channel for future sponsors and can potentially decrease your income. 4. Having a separate video will split your viewers into two camps. I totally understand that ad-free versions will stay as they are, since this change is already announced and is mostly welcomed by patrons. It’s not a deal breaker for me and it will not affect my patronage. But I still wanted to share my perspective in case you’ll plan similar changes in the future and in case someone else have the same issues as me.

EasyAllies

FYI, having the comments in a separate video makes basically no difference to me. On YouTube's back end I see all the comments on all the videos in a single feed, I don't check them video by video. -Bloodworth

As long as Hall of Greats continues, all will be well in the world of EZA! L&R :-)

Jones, 2019 is a great year for games so far. I was thinking since we were getting near the end of the year, that game of the year discussions will be starting soon. My question is has a game of the year decision between the allies every been so split between more then two different games. I know 2018 was between God of War and Red Dead 2, 2017 was between Persona 5 and Breath of the wild, and who could forget the Witcher 3 vs Grand Theft Auto V debate, but what would happen if each ally had a different game of the year or the votes would be split between like 4 different games?

I feel that this COJ about the Roost partnership should be public on YouTube? 🤔

Heya Jones, Cool, cool, cool. Okay. But if Phase 4 of Easy Allies was a poor Jewish milkman, would it prefer its oldest daughter marry the butcher or the tailor? Bonus non-business question: The new trailer for Cats came out and it has absolutely no singing in it. What's up with that?

Anonymous

Mr. Jones, There is a ton going on with Disney Plus. Is there any plan for coverage or commentary? Possibly as a special report? Possibly as a Don't Skip on the 7-Day free trial? Possibly a review? Possibly a Cup of Jones editorial on what you would recommend? Sorry for rambling, I was skeptical, checked it out last night and now I'm sold on it. Respectfully, Morgan Mohalla

Hi Jones, I just want to put in my 2 cents that if the patrons get an "ad-free version" I personally would still like to hear the Patron paid "shawdawts" so if they could be two separate things that'd be great.

Hey Jones, Last Podcast on the Left, a huge podcast that I love, recently signed an exclusivity deal with Spotify for 2 years. It's taken a lot of the fans aback. The main issue is that those in one of the ~50 countries without Spotify, including South Korea, can't access the podcast anymore, even if they've been a loyal listener for 6 years. Is this something the Allies would ever consider doing or are you all collectively against the idea of making the podcast or other content exclusive? Thanks! -Nirav

Spreadshirt almost always has sales going on anyways...I just googled "spreadshirt coupon" and coupon code FREENOVEMBER is for free shipping: Valid until 11/22/19 with standard delivery. Only valid on www.spreadshirt.com, but not in Spreadshirt's Partner Shops. Minimum order value: $25. Can’t be combined with other promo codes. Also try code GPOSY...I just used it for 5% off...its not much but it combined with free shipping.

Personally i think they're looking too hard at the lower end of their tiers and not giving enough opportunities for expansion in the middle ($35/40/45 etc.)

Anonymous

Hey Jonesie! I know there are some licensing issues due to the music, but would you ever consider bringing Box Peek to a network television or streaming provider? It seems like exactly the kind of thing Adult Swim would be about. And what better way to advertise EZA than having "An Easy Allies Production" in front of a larger audience? LnR, Quaznarg

Hey Brandon, I'm a (mostly) silent patron since day 1 but I still have one question: How do we reach the individual Allies? I figured Cup Of Jones was the right place to ask questions and submit feedback about your shows but most of the time when a show specific question or suggestion comes up, you answer it with 'XYZ is the producer of that show. I don't know, ask him'. So let's say I have some feedback to share for Achieve It Yourself or Mysterious Monsters... how and where do I write it down so I'm sure the 'right' ally gets to read it. Don't get me worng, it's not about making sure that I get a response from all of you for every question I ask. I'm just interested what exactly is the 'correct' way to submit feedback to each and every one of you. Gretings from Germany and thank you for all that amazing content, Andre

Hey Jonesey! In light of recent events of your internet cutting out, isnt it time to invest in a backup? Im not sure how this works in the US, but in Europe a 4G modem with unlimited data costs you about 20 euros a month for businesses. Ive heard data is expensive in the US, but cannot confirm this myself. Would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Hi Brandon! After watching the latest Hall of Greats, I'm questioning the motivation of some Allies to participate in it. I think you've mentioned in the past that some of you feel stressed by the amount of work it represents, which I fully realize, and it is noticeable. For the second time in a row, Ian showed disinterest in the process by not preparing anything. Does he feel burned because he actually put a lot of effort in his presentations in the past (like Myst) but didn't win? Is it a form of protest to prove a point that presentations don't matter, only the quality of the games? If that's the case, have you had conversations about it before or after the show? I know some people found it funny and obviously this is nothing to get up in arms about. But as a viewer, I still find it disappointing. For me, the Hall of Greats is where you all get to express your passion for a particular game and share it with everyone. This part matters just as much to the audience as the eventual winners. Don exemplifies this and I now really want to play Alien vs Predator. I hate asking this because Hall of Greats is one of my favorite streams you guys produce, but if it's becoming an obligation rather a fun thing to do, should you keep doing it? Or if someone feels that the process is flawed, shouldn't they just not participate?

Anonymous

*PEDANT WARNING* Apologies if anyone has already requested this before--could you please re-name the Q&A portion of the Hall of Greats to something other than "cross-examination"? Has Hoeg complained about this yet? I know it's all in jest and you're just playing lawyer/advocate dress-up. It's actually at the root of what makes so much of your stuff great: this performative, almost cartoonishly self-serious take on a (let's be honest) fun and frivolous hobby, delivered from a personal position of genuine passion and love. Yet I think you can still pick a term for the Q&A that sounds ironically serious without making me cringe. May I suggest "inquiry", "hearing", or simply "examination"? These terms all better describe the action of a (panel of) decision maker(s) asking questions.

It's almost like Ian and Damiani were crazy busy with reviews and didn't have time to prepare for HOG, but that couldn't possibly be the case.

Greetings Brandon from the great white north! 1st time poster here after becoming a Patreon after following you guys for so many years. Question for ya - just watched the recent hall of greats (so glad FFVII got in - even though XI is my fav of all time despite not playing it for over a decade - combines the best of the series even over XIV!). Just popped in my head while all of the Allies were hanging out in the stream room I noticed you were all wearing shoes even though the cozy vibes of the couches depicts a more relaxed atmosphere. Is this a choice by everyone? Would wanting a more relaxed feel (maybe add a nice feeling area rug to the room) allow you all to ‘kick back’ in an even more approachable living room kind of way that the space is invoking? Perhaps shoe wearing is more of a business mindset (or hygienic lol) thing? I’m sure viewers wouldn’t mind either way as whatever jolly vibes we get watching you all is great - just wondered if a more comfortable time in the stream room - especially after long hours - could feel better sans footwear. I’m sure you or Huber would rock some sweet decorative socks! Cheers to you and the team for what you give to us each and everyday and if I don’t have a chance again - you guys all have a great holiday season!

Hi Brandon, I was curious about your take on the VP of Rooster Teeth's arrest for "brutally abusing" his wife. Here is a link to a local article: https://www.kxan.com/news/rooster-teeth-vp-arrested-after-wife-alleges-brutal-abuse-strangulation/ Based on my observations, you seem like an honest, decent guy who would never do something like this to your wife. I wanted to know if something like this happening at Rooster Teeth gives you pause as a business owner about continuing to do business with them.

Anonymous

Wow, that story is awful. He really could have killed her. I'm not Jones but I think if the accused were immediately dismissed from his RT position the business relationship could continue. However, that hasn't happened yet.

ToiletDrummer

Hi Brandon. So since the last HoG I kept thinking about the discussion concerning favoritism vs presentation of nominees. While I think that there definitely are "no-brainers" like Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time etc. that easy get the unanimous majority of the allies votes, I also believe that you tend to reward a good, passionate presentation despite the inherent popularity of the nominee. Ultimately those nominees still tend to fall short on points and end up in third or fourth place. Now you might be tired of the community trying to doctor with the HoG-rules and feel free to ignore this if it has already been proposed, but how about something akin to a safety net for those 3rd and 4th places were we put them to a community vote after two HoG-streams? This way the community gets some input and the allies can bring games to the vote more confidently since their games may end up in the safety net. This could also potentially prevent alot of repetition. Of course consider this just a well-intented proposition. Keep up the great work. L&R ToiletDrummer

Hey Jones, Kind of my own personal question here, I kinda want to submit my batman beyond movie idea in the next showcase, but not if the guest isn't a fan. When you figure out who the next guest on the community showcase will be can you email me if they like batman beyond before, so I don't have the situation happen like in the last showcase where it turns out Damiani did like it but I didn't submit it. Thanks for all you guys do, L&R Sean, email- heff9512@gmail.com

Hi, Jones. I was very unsure of how to post this, hence why it took 2 months - I had finished the Spider-Man movies after the X-Men ones, but it was what you've said during "Cup of Jones on October 28, 2019 - Potential Conflicts of Interest"'s Editorial that gave me the confidence to dump all my issues with Spider-Man (2002) - and in the future, Batman (1989) and Chicago (2002), the worst movie I have ever watched! - knowing you absolutely love these movies. I was very afraid you would hate me for some reason. I still am a little, since the things I talk about might and some probably will ruin many aspects of these movies for you. Although, if you wait many years to watch them again, you might not remember these things. Still, I put it on a text hosting site and you can avoid it if you want. Here I will only put the score as a TL;DR. Today I'm only covering Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies. Full reviews: https://textuploader.com/1o44u My score: Spider-Man (2002) - 3/10. (Your score: 7/10.) My score: Spider-Man 2 (2004) - 7/10. (Your score: 8/10.) My score: Spider-Man 3 (2007) - 8/10. (Your score: 3/10.) It's quite funny that we gave the same score to Spider-Man 2, but inverted for Spider-Man 1 and 3. I had given Spider-Man 1 a 5/10 after watching it, but when I started to write my review and started thinking about the awful things in it, I lowered it to a 3/10. Personal question: On a scale of 1 to 10, what's the score you would give to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and Venom (2018)? L & R

Hi Jones. What would you think of playing some of the weird Pokemon spin-offs on stream with Kyle? A lot of these games are looked down upon by pokemon fans for being different but there are some real gems in there: Pokemon Ranger is a mission based Action Adventure game, Conquest is FF Tactics style game with feudal Japan style aesthetic, Colosseum and Gale of Darkness feel like the first 3D pokemon games despite not being mainline entries, I also think that there's some really interesting mechanics and ideas in that game that haven't been replicated. And lastly the Mystery Dungeon games (particularly Explorers of Sky and Blue Rescue Team ), these games have to have the biggest divergence between reviewers and players that i've seen, with a 54 critic score and 88 user score on metacritic. These games have wonderful writing, easily the best in any pokemon game, the gameplay definitely isn't the greatest, but the story makes up for the repetition. I think these games all would at least be fun as one-off streams, to show the weird, different sides of pokemon that are out there. L&R
