One of my favorite things about operating this Patreon is seeing new names come up in each episode of Cup of Jones, and when reading each of our Podcast Producers at the end of the month. This is one of those Cups where I see lots of new names. Some allies I recognize from other shows or streams, but they’re posting here for the first time. It makes me happy that people can discover this show and learn more about me/us, or feel comfortable asking a question after a long silence when they feel the need arise. Whether you just listen along each week, or you regularly leave comments, I appreciate your focus. As this show has evolved, so have the amount and types of questions. It’s a comfort to know you’re all willing to help me keep this business as transparent as possible, and fix as many issues as we can.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

DENIZ SCHREIBE - During your 30s, have you put much thought into staying healthy and looking back do you feel it paid off? What areas have you done a good job and what areas do you wish your 30-year old self had been more mindful of? And moving into your 40s, do you have a new health gameplan? JONES - Amanda is much healthier than I when it comes to the food we choose to eat, but I’ve definitely gotten healthier-minded as I’ve gotten older. I think it’s a natural occurrence for most people. As time catches up to each of us, and our usual tricks to get over our limitations don’t work as well anymore, we start to seek out more effective solutions. It started for me with anxiety, which led me to go running more, which led to doing half-marathons at Disneyland. I started getting stomach issues, which led me to investigate lactose-intolerance and other similar digestive problems, only to discover ultimately that it was just stress eating me up from the inside. I wish I could teach 30-year-old Jones meditation, and illustrate the benefits. That’s really my goal moving forward. Mindfulness. Be aware what’s happening to your body. Don’t let stress, or love of work, or exterior substances, dictate “how you feel.” Be directly in control. I also want to try and make that struggle part of my work here for people that are dealing with the same thing.

VGJUNKY - I know you tried out the bow in Monster Hunter for Switch but did you know that Monster Hunter World secretly has some of the best bow combat in video games? Take a minute to look at this example. JONES - It’s not a secret. At least not to me. SunhiLegend posted a gif the other day of some crazy bow-attack-flipping action and it almost made me cry. I feel like World is represented very well by the other allies, so I’ve never felt the need to dive into the game for the sake of work coverage. That said, it is extremely tempting, and something I could see myself losing hours of my life to, easily. I feel the same way about Final Fantasy XIV.

MOHAMED SINAN - Recently on the monthly Q&A I heard you talking about how you would love a sequel to GTA Chinatown Wars, and you specifically mentioned how you wanted it to be a Switch exclusive, and that's weird to me. I understand that if that game existed your preferred way to play it would be on the Switch, however, what I don't understand is why you repeatedly emphasized that you wanted it to be an exclusive. It's a third party game, so wouldn't be better if it came to all platforms and everybody got to play it on whichever one they own? This has also come up before on another Q&A, for another game that you also wanted to be only on the Switch and, again, I gotta say I don't understand why. JONES - Sure, good point. I’ll clarify. I don’t think the “exclusive” bit needed to be emphasized by me for the sake of favoring the Switch over other consoles. I think I was commenting on how Nintendo has helped fund certain projects (Bayonetta 2, Ultimate Alliance 3, etc.) that otherwise wouldn’t have happened at all. So I was thinking Nintendo and Rockstar could invest together, thus increasing the likelihood that a Chinatown Wars sequel could get greenlit in the first place. But there’d be no benefit to Switch exclusivity beyond that for Grand Theft Auto fans. The best version of that reality would be for it to appear on every console available.

Hey Mr. Jones! As I intimated in a previous post, I wanted to ask about one aspect of the new Trailer Jones graphics. As I said in a P.S., I LOVE the new graphics, but there’s one thing that’s a tiny bit distracting. In an effort to give the feeling its in a theater, one of the biggest sells (aside from the curtain), is the chairs. However, the unoccupied ones feel a tiny bit too tall. Having black rectangles cover a portion of the trailer, where I can see vertical slits of the trailer playing is distracting. While I don’t want the seats to go away, do you think it would hurt to shorten those chairs just a tiny bit? As a point of measurement, about half a fingernail’s length if you hold your finger horizontally. When looking at the mock-up, after taking in the silhouettes, I couldn’t help but continuously have my eyes drawn to the empty seats. Just something I wanted to give feedback on. Thanks as always for reading my question and have a wonderful rest of your day! Cheers! QUESTION: Can the unoccupied chairs in the new Trailer Jones graphics be shortened just slightly in an effort to be not distracting from the trailer itself or would that be too much work (as I’m a novice to graphic design, I don’t know if it’s its own layer)?

Hi Mr. Jones, I love all the new things EZA has implemented recently. I'm curious; with all the discussions that must have taken place around new shows, what shows or ideas came up that either you wanted to do but can't at the moment or shows that you all disagreed on? Thanks.

Hi Jones, Given its the spookiest month of the year, I was wondering if there are any plans to put Huber and Kyle into a room together to do a full playthrough of a spooky game of some sort (with Kyle's consent of course). The Outlast 2 and Resident Evil VII playthroughs that you were also featured on were a ton of fun to watch, even if they don't necessarily have the most views compared to something like Keanu's E3 reveal. I personally feel like these two Allies are a good combo because Huber loves horror and Kyle is easily frightened. It makes for a good yin and yang for actually enjoying the story while getting a little spooked at the same time. Maybe a Silent Hill 2 play with Ian would be appealing, and could also get more allies involved to come in an out. Any personal thoughts? I know you are a fan of the Halloween spirit, and I'd love to see more horror or Halloween themed content come through. Cheers, Brian from Happy Gaming

Is there any plans to bring back "I love last gen" next year? Now that you have the studio hopefully it wouldnt be too hard to have people just swing by when they are in town to record a couple segments. Maybe lean on andrea rene now that shes in LA to help you wrangle in some more guests.

VGJunky

I don't think that chat needed you to read every line of Kyle's game out loud, but the general sentiment I saw was that you were scrolling text a little too fast for people to keep up easily. It was doable but I was feeling a little bad for people that were saying they weren't able to follow what was going on It makes sense to hide chat for spoiler purposes but also sometimes it's good to keep tabs on it (maybe just one person manning the PC or with chat on their phone) to see how things are going in the audience - whether we can hear/see you guys properly, sound mixing when doing reactions, etc

Hey Jones I just want to jump in and thank you you for such an in depth answer to my question. It's always cool to hear different opinions and get different takes on a subject. I'm can't wait to see what Huber has to say about the game now. And I really to see you two have an in depth discussion about it.

Anonymous

I second the suggestion about always having one person checking up on chat. May I also suggest that one person should always be on chat duty, regardless of whether chat is hidden or not?

Anonymous

Hi Jones, I remember asking a question about shorter form content to appeal to a wider audience. The idea you had of snipping bits of the podcast and uploading them separately was a great idea. Any word on if that will be happening or not?

Don't read this on the next episode, but I agree with the criticism about how you handle streaming games with character dialogue. Call me spoiled, but hearing the person streaming read out the dialogue helps so much with immersing into the game worlds of the streams, especially helps for us slow readers who might not finish text before you move forward. Bloodworth always does an excellent job on this during his streams, but I could also cite the recent Trials of Mana streams as another example of this. Huber as well usually does a great job reading documents for the viewers, which is above and beyond, but really expresses his passion for the games and ups the overall quality of the streams for the viewers. It makes a pretty massive difference, and I know you said you got no feedback back when you streamed Final Fantasy 6 about it, but I watched all of those streams extremely passively and couldn't really get into it because of this same issue. All that said, I think you handled playing Kyle's game just fine. Group stream is indeed a different setting as you went into. Slight side tangent, before you say nobody ever brought this one up, your Red Dead Redemption 2 stream was likewise AWFUL for newcomers. I know you skipped the start because it is "slow" but being thrown further into the game meant us people who hadn't played it didn't get the same character introductions or context as Kyle would say, to what we were watching. The "amazing mission" you showcased fell really flat because of this, and you basically convinced me I didn't need to play the game at the time. This was after me absolutely adoring your playthrough of the original Red Dead Redemption as well as Undead Nightmare. I don't always post feedback like this, because I don't want to be the lady at Subway Kyle talks about who goes "Excuse me! Smile!" to the poor employees. End of the day it is your decision how you want to conduct yourself, but yes these things make a night and day difference for the audience. I don't think anyone would take it as you showing off, and even if they did, I think it is fair to say you guys have at least one foot in the entertainment business, so not only is it acceptable, but some might outright tune in expecting this.

Hello Brandon. What will happen if an ally assigned to review a game can’t finish it because it’s too difficult for him (either he isn’t skilled enough or he made some bad choices during his playthrough)? Will you produce a review based on the incomplete experience you had? Will you ask another ally or even external person (possibly via a savegame) to help? Will you just abandon the review and make a Don’t Skip instead? Also will your decision change based on how many other outlets have the same problems with difficulty?

strawhatninja

Jones, I know the focus is on reaching new Patrons and you talked about how happy you were to see new names last week but what about us old timers? Do you guys recognize names that have been around since the beginning and do you ever get battles between new patrons vs old in a matter of opinion or tastes?

Autumn and Winter are up on us again. And with that, an increased risk for people catching a cold of the influenza virus. Obviously it is out of our control to completely avoid getting sick, but are there any measurements to limit the risk of another EZA virus knocking out the whole crew? Are the allies encouraged to wash their hands more often? Are allies that feel a bit funny encouraged to stay at home? Is sharing snacks and food with each other restricted? Do you provide vitamin-rich fruits at the studio? As someone who just caught a cold (and totally blames his coworkers for it - *wink* - not winking), I am interested in what you try to do to limit that risk. Or do you have an approach of "It's going to happen anyways, let's not make ourselves crazy about what we can't avoid"? I have my fingers crossed for all of you to make it to the summer without getting sick!

Mr. Jones, Since the holidays are coming and going, what is the vacation and holiday situation like at Easy Allies? Does it depend on how much work there is on deck? Is it a more casual system in place? Do things get put aside if multiple allies need time off at a certain time? I understand there have been lost family members this year, and I only mean to inquire about the run of the mill arrangement for time away from work and fully understand that certain circumstances will be given appropriate consideration. PS: As a possible editorial, would you care to impart you favorite Halloween season rituals? You have mentioned that you love this time of year and it would be great to hear what makes it so special for you. Hey Jones, as a relatively recent dad of twins I've had much less gaming time and have found myself gravitating towards mindless platformers or just grinding in RPG's(the switch has been a god send with how quick it is to start up and portable). What are you playing when you're with your kid or just tired after a long day?

Anonymous

Hi jones, now that phase 4 started and the allies have consistant streaming schedules are there plans for more sponors for those streams? L&R Alex

Hi, Jones. Do EZA YouTube videos generate more ad revenue if one lets the entire ad play at the beginning of videos, or does EZA receive the same amount of revenue if one skips or watches the entire ad? I usually skip but I wonder whether it's more beneficial for EZA if I watch the entire ad. L&R.

Mr. Jones: Are you tired of playing videogames or at least have that feeling? with all the coverage that you need to do, playing a game wouldn't be the same as 10 years ago, where you can play a game without talk about it, just the pleasure to play it. Do you think the rest of the allies feel the same way?

Hi Jones, is there any plan to do a Pokémon Sword and Shield spoiler mode or discussion? I know the cadence of “Brandon plays pokemon” and “Brandon Sun, Kyle Moon” took a lot of the enjoyment out of the game, but I would still love to hear your thoughts about the new games. L&R

Hi Jones! In your Phase 4 Announcement stream, Damiani promised a lengthy Patreon post regarding his decision to stop producing Game Sleuth. I understand that the show had to end, but I was looking forward to hearing about his perspective. So, I was disappointed when this post never appeared. Is it still coming? L&R Dave

Hi Jones, Thank you for your input about the audio clip I submitted on the showcase. It really means something to me that you think it sounds professional, since you basically do narration for a living. The support from you and Brad and Huber last month and Ian and Kyle and Amanda (Box Peek) and the AMAZING EZA community just keeps boosting my confidence. I really TRULY would not be at this point without you. <3 To answer your question, I went through a company at SuchaVoice.com where (for a price) you get the in-home studio equipment, vocal coaching and a commercial or narration demo or both. They sent me a form to get an idea of my interests and then they wrote the scripts. I inputted some changes including a complete re-write of the botanical garden one (which they accepted!) because it has to sound as natural as if I am talking, not reading, which that one just didn't. Having it approved gave me more confidence and now that I know what "Professional" sounds like, I have a benchmark to measure my product against. They then put the music behind the phrases and sent it back to me. Just as a teaser, I have written another script which I think you'll like (a parody of sorts) of an EZA show using my own character voices, which I'm hoping to maybe use as a character reel so I want the EZA community to give their input as well. I really appreciate all of the support and I'll let you all know if I get any "bites" on my reel. L&R Jessie Blu

Heya Jones, Okay, so if Phase 4 of Easy Allies was planning Jason's bar mitzvah, would it choose round tables or square tables?

Anonymous

Hi, I just wanted to express how much I loved your voice in that clip you submitted to the last Community Showcase. It's a really beautiful voice, but also impactful and unique. I even thought how much I wanted to hear it in games, animated movies and cartoons. Your voice is perfect for voice acting. I really wish you all the best of luck from the bottom of my heart. Though I'm a little selfish here, because I also want to hear it more. L & R

Hi, Jones. Continuing from Blade from two weeks ago, now is time for Daredevil and Elektra: Daredevil (2003) - 3/10 - I have given a 7 before, but boy was I wrong back then. The beginning of the movie, which is also the origins story, is really well done. Even though I have watched all the Netflix's Marvel shows and that Daredevil's origins story is also very well done, this one didn't lose anything to it. Even with many popular actors of the time - some still today - and some fighting scenes being very good, like the bar one which makes good use of special effects, it still isn't enough to save this movie. The utter nonsense is off the chain, for example, Daredevil kills someone and it isn't even for anything serious like avenging someone's murder, preventing one, by accident or in self-defense, he kills someone who beat a woman - but didn't kill her - and tried to kill him, though he had already disarmed the criminal and there was no reason to kill him. That's very antithetic to his character in the comics and later on in the movie. Daredevil has killed before in the comics, but in very specific situations - a humanoid monster, seld-defense, extreme grief and wrath at the loss of a loved one, etc. So that scene was very odd in the sense that in the TV series, Daredevil does everything possible to not kill someone, no matter how much he wants that person to die. Now depending on how someone looks at it, they might find it isn't that bad, however it gets even worse because at the end of the movie Daredevil decides to spare Kingpin's life even though he knows he was responsible for the deaths of "the only two people he ever truly loved in his life" - his own words. It's completely out of character from both the character in the comics as well as the character the own movie established in the first half. There's also some very cartonish moments like when Matt Murdock fights Elektra in the park, which is cool from a choreography standpoint, but does the story and Elektra's character a disservice, by making Elektra's character seem very dumb for not realizing that a normal blind man can't fight like that. It's also very, very cheesy in a bad way, something reminiscent of the era's bad trends. Bullseye's bar and airport scenes are comically bad as well, specially the airport one where it looks like the movie was trying to make Bullseye look like the biggest wanker and idiot in the world, and even that was executed poorly. So the character looked bad and trying to make the character look bad looked even worse. Last, but definitely not least, the music choices for this movie are horrible and don't even make sense. I can't stress this enough and you most likely have no idea how horrible it is, so to give an example: during a funeral that's supposed to be somber and serious about a person that was murdered when Daredevil failed to stop it, it starts playing "Evanescence - My Immortal"... I... I couldn't continue watching and just had to pause, because it is so incredibly bad that I started laughing very hard at it. A freaking funeral and it's giving me the opposite feelings that I should be feeling. If you can find Daredevil on a streaming service or has a DVD/Blu-Ray, try watching this particular scene, it starts at 01:25:56 and it's beyond funny. I have no idea what the hell they were thinking! I knew some of these movies would be very rough to watch, but the really horrible ones are surprising me in very unexpected ways that I hadn't thought of. That song in a funeral is just too much, I'm still laughing very hard while typing this. Oh, man... insane stuff. The worst thing is that this stuff almost completely breaks immersion, since you have a very hard time trying to take things seriously from that point on, and in the end you just can't. Elektra (2005) - 4/10 - The beginning introduction is bad, but the follow up is good even though it's very cheesy. They retconned how Elektra died, because in Daredevil (2003), she died in the arms of Daredevil and it even showed her heart beating slower and slower until it stopped through Daredevil's senses. It also showed her lifeless corpse. In this movie, however, they show her dying in an ambulance. Even if you had watched each movie 2 years apart, that heart stopping scene isn't something you would forget. There's also no reason to show her still being alive in that ambulance, it serves no purpose at all. I hate stuff like this in movies and sometimes it may be inevitable, but this is even worse since it was sloppy and meaningless. There's another pointless retconning during a flashback, in Daredevil (2003), Elektra said her mother died in front of her when she was very young and that she gave her a pendant before she died. In this movie she finds her mother's corpse and then takes the pendant from it. The fact that I watched these movies back-to-back just exarcebates these contradictions. But what truly bothers me is that they are done with no real purpose since there wasn't a need to tell them differently - no event in this movie is dependant on them being different. The fights are bad and uninteresting. The almost indestructible guy being able to stop a close range shotgun blast and being strong enough to break a very large tree's body in a single swing of his club, but then going in the path of said tree falling and not using his strength to stop it or being able to withstand the weight was pretty dumb. At least some of the characters were cool and the story was tolerable. L & R PS. I watched the Community Showcase for May 2019 and you're wrong. Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) is amazing! I gave it 8/10 and I'm not religious, so completely unbiased opinion. I also only watched it once, but loved it.

Hey Brandon, is the process of making podcast public on youtube not automated? It didn't show up on time, so I wonder if it's not automated, what is the reason for that?

EasyAllies

There's no method to automate going from an unlisted video to a public one, no. Someone has to be there to do it manually. -Bloodworth

I am concerned in the way in which EZA has abruptly ripped the "no politics" band-aid off itself through the previous Podcast and especially through Frame Trap now. Not only were these very long discussions that made up large portions of the mentioned podcasts, but I worry about potential repercussions of some of the language used during these discussions for reasons best not gone into here. I still primarily enjoy EZA as a place away from politics, and I hope the decision to cover this story in such excessive depth does not jeopardize this environment where many people of various backgrounds can meet neutrally to enjoy games going forward. Separately, I hope future Blizzard events and games aren't chosen to be boycotted by EZA on political grounds. I know you understand my sentiment on that Jones as you yourself have many times talked about separating art from the sometimes horrible things around and even occasionally contributing toward the creation of it.

Hey Jones! Two reviews going up near each other on a Sunday! Does that mean you had a long weekend? Thanks for all your work!

hi jones, just wanted to say how much i truly appreciate the way eza has opened up about their individual ideals and not shied away from discussing big political issues in the gaming industry recently. it really goes a long way to make the allies feel honest and real and it allows so many of us to feel safer and more welcome in the community. staying silent on these issues allows others to place their beliefs onto you and invites those with hateful ideas to feel like those ideas are valid or welcome, despite how harmful they might be. anyway, thanks for being you and keep up the great work!
