Damiani spreading the old "pc is freedom" when so many pc games are steam only but because steam keys are sold outside of steam on other platforms. Also accusing a small studio who's reviving a franchise with such a huge scale of ripping people off is really a bad look imo. Epic is not a good guy, but Steam is just a monopoly nowadays. Its the google of pc gaming, and they're the ones ripping off indie studios with a huge cut and bad visibility but its way less buzz worthy than epic buying exclusives. Watching GDC presentations makes you realize how much indies can suffer from the Steam monopoly

re: epic game store: it's not available in a lot of countries, no linux version, for steam users who planned to import their shenmue 1+2 save file, that's also not gonna happen and the KS listing steam specifically as the platform back in the day, this combined with Epic's cocky attitude when it comes to securing exclusives or developers (Rocket League's Psyonix), spyware issues and general lack of proven staying power (as a marketplace) all came together to piss people off. No takes issue against GOG for example.

That is not the case. EGS is available basically everywhere now, and offers more regional pricing than Steam. Also, the original Kickstarter did not actually promise Steam keys, just digital copies. There's no reason Shenmue 3 couldn't import saves irrespective of where the PC version of the first games were bought and played. The "cocky attitude" is basically entirely invented by people who don't like what they are doing and therefore interpret anything they do as anti-consumer, arrogant, etc.

The games that are Steam only are Steam only because the developers chose that, not because Steam is giving them money to not sell their games anywhere else. Claiming your Kickstarter backers would get Steam keys, then later turning around on that unless they wait until a year after launch is sort of ripping people off since that isn't what they paid for. You can claim Steam's way of doing things is "bad visibility" for indie games, but there's a list of newest games right on the main store page that equally lists all new games as they release. Everyone gets the same fair opportunity. Most of the promotional eyecatches on the store are reserved for games on sale or games offering promotions like free weekends as well, rather than just which publisher gave them money to appear huge on the front page. On top of all this, Steam offers Discovery Queues for people to find games they might not be aware that, that people are encouraged to go through with seasonal Steam events that reward people for doing so, and there's a Curator program where people can highlight cool games to draw other's attention to them. Because the Curator stuff is a community element, it is relatively easy to find someone or even multiple people with similar taste in games to yourself and discover lots of stuff through that. I guarantee all of this is handled better for the consumer than anything the Epic Game Store is offering. If the current Epic Game Store had as many games as Steam offers, it would be a way worse visibility situation overall since they don't have the many systems in place to deal with this.

Re: Damiani's point about Epic buying exclusivity, I think if you're trying to break into the market there's no real way to compete with Steam without pushing. Steam is the de facto PC platform, and because of that so many games release on Steam as exclusives. The fact that Steam is so eponymous now that it doesn't even need to pay money to have exclusives doesn't invalidate the fact it has thousands of games that can only be played through Steam. I'm not crazy about Epic either mind you, it's got a long way to go before it catches up, but I think strongarm tactics like this is one of the only paths forward, otherwise they'll just end up like GoG, which outside of CDPR's games isn't exactly a 'competitor' to Steam any more than Uplay or Origin is - and the only reason people launch Uplay or Origin is for exclusives. Whether anybody likes it or not, exclusive games are THE thing that makes your platform worth owning.

I think that Epic is offering more than a better cut to be exclusive. I think Epic is offering cold hard cash to be an exclusive.

Correction: Wolfenstein Youngblood and Doom Eternal are both NOT developed by Bethesda Game Studios

CORRECTION: Brad said Atlus would be moving up because Persona Q2 would be coming out. Persona Q2 was already been released on June 4th 2019.

first half an hour on this boring shenmue story? damn

I agree with Ian. It's such a non-issue having to click a different icon to play a game instead of Steam. The people who are upset about that need to refocus their anger on issues that are actually worth it.

Halftime game was pure garbage.
