... As postulated in my early hypothesis, the nano-organisms we have come to define as Nereids appear to be primarily symbiotic. Uncannily enough, they seem to align themselves intimately with the host organism's needs and desires, quite literally tailoring the host organism at a molecular level to whichever whims or needs the host itself perceives to be appropriate and/or necessary. Coupled with what appears to be a hive mentality, the Nereids tether themselves completely to the host's thoughts, emotions, and physiological reactions to quite literally reshape it in real times, with larger concentrations of Nereids accelerating this process exponentially.

However, as Nereids continue to replicate and populate the host, their concentration allows them to begin developing thought patterns independent of the host, this is what we have come to define as the early beginnings of a Nereid colony. At this level of development, a Nereid colony appears to quickly turn the tables on its host, consuming and assimilating its cellular structure into the colony to become an entirely new entity if the process is left unchecked.

Touching back upon Nurse Nakamura, we can observe how the chemical failsafes introduced by our initial serum strains have, for the most part, contained her transformations within mostly acceptable parameters, causing her body to shed and remove excess Nereids via her fluid secretions to prevent critical instability. A very desirable outcome as we initially sought means of mass production of Nereids for our ongoing research, yet not without its own pitfalls, as Nurse Nakamura herself must be contained at all times to prevent interactions with those within the facility who have not been properly innoculated beforehand (or are undergoing Nereidyl treatment themselves), lest we find ourselves having to deal with yet another eldritch behemoth rampaging through the facility...
