When starting out as a photography assistant, there are a few challenges to be aware of.

For one, the pay can be very low, making it tough to make ends meet while gaining valuable experience. Additionally, the schedule can be unpredictable, with long hours and last-minute changes. It's important to be flexible and ready to jump in at a moment's notice.

Another challenge is the physical demands of the job. You'll be responsible for carrying heavy equipment, setting up lighting, and standing for long periods of time. This can be exhausting and physically demanding work.

One of the limitations of being an assistant is that you have limited creative control. Your primary role is to support the photographer's vision and execute their ideas. While you may be able to provide input and suggestions, ultimately it's up to the photographer to make the creative decisions.

Finally, job security can be a concern for photography assistants. Many positions are freelance or project-based, which can lead to an unstable and uncertain job situation. It's important to be proactive in seeking out new opportunities and building a network of contacts in the industry.
