We're back to our usually scheduled content folks, and first up is Actraiser Renaissance! I'd considered Deathloop, but at this point, I think that game's pretty well covered and decided to go for something a little more recent. All-in-all, it's a fairly respectable game that got an actually decent remaster, which is better than you can say for a lot of these straight-to-mobile Square Enix remasters. I have a hard time recommending it, however, because the game's most rudimentary and underwhelming mode, the city building, also happens to be the one you spend almost the entire time playing, creating an experience that feels a little bloated and disrespectful of your time. To be clear: there's still great stuff to find here. It's just buried under a lot of simplistic proto-city building fluff.

We've got plenty more coming in the future folks. I've got a bit of an aggressive schedule planned out for this month, and next up is going to be Unsighted, a very neat little isometric action game with an emphasis on time that's giving me some massive Iconoclasts vibes. I'm excited to check it out!

Five Hours In, Actraiser Renaissance Shows Its Age

Actraiser Renaissance was a bit of a curveball, suddenly resurrecting a 30-year old cult classic from the NES era. And while this remaster is a perfectly respectable update, the original game underneath still shows its age as many of its systems are rudimentary takes on genres that we've come to enjoy much more advanced and fully realized renditions of in the decades since. Renaissance makes valiant attempts to update these systems, but they're just not enough and ultimately just make the dull bits even longer.
