After some minor technical difficulties, this week's review is live (for real this time!) As mentioned last time, I'm checking out Haven, one of a rare breed of honest to gosh romance video games (outside of the visual novel sphere, at least). And I'm happy to say that Haven does not disappoint. While absolutely unrecognizable from Game Bakers' previous title, Furi, Haven is no less stellar at what it wants to accomplish, which is painting a picture of a relationship one conversational brush stroke at a time. Haven is a game with plenty of high concept sci-fi stuff flying around, but at the end of the day, it's about small moments: the day-to-day 30 second small talk that you'll never remember in 20 years, but utterly defines the tone of a relationship. In that sense, Haven is a wonderfully unique game, and thanks to its sharp writing, it's a fantastically executed one, as well.

For the rest of the month, I'm going to be changing gears over to the year in review, and at the start of January, you all have another quarterly wrapup to look forward to! And first up on that list, I'm going to be looking at another extremely stylized narrative-focused game. I'm finally going to get to play Paradise Killer!

Every Little Thing They Do is Magic: Haven Review

Haven is a rare beast indeed — a fully fledged romance game that isn't a visual novel. Though Haven has plenty of RPG combat, exploration, and light survival elements, the real core of this game is its protagonists relationship, a relationship defined by small moments and little 30 seconds conversations that cumulatively paint a full and rich picture one spoken brush stroke at a time. It's a fantastic time and you owe it to yourself to try it!
