At long last, I've finally finished that second video essay I promised way back when I launched this patreon. Folks, please enjoy the very first Five Hour Classic exploring To the Moon's nigh-magical ability to get you to connect with its characters and make you feel like you've known them all your life. That's a rare feat to pull off! And a nearly impossible one to achieve in such a brief runtime. But gorsh darnit, To the Moon somehow does it, and because of that, there are few candidates better suited to kicking off a series all about games that do more with less to create short but singular experiences.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what's coming up next week. A very belated quarterly wrapup is in the works, but that one's probably two weeks out, and in the meantime, I'll probably review...something! I did have an experiment I wanted to try, but instead of actually doing it, I've spent the past two weeks sitting and dreading it, so that's probably a good sign to go try something else. But whatever it is, it'll probably be showing up next week!

To the Moon and the Weight of a Lifetime | Five Hour Classics

To the Moon is one of gaming's most infamous tearjerkers, and its greatest strength is its ability to convey an entire lifetime of experiences in just a few short hours. By the end of its runtime, it truly feels like you know its main characters better than your own closest friends. And that understanding lets To the Moon say more than entire games without speaking a word — and makes what it does say land with resounding weight. I can't think of a better game to inaugurate this new series of video essays than one that does so much with so little on every front, including its runtime. To the Moon is a true five hour classic. This video rounds out my first big push for my brand new Patreon! If you loved this video to death and want more like it, the fastest way to get more is by supporting me on Patreon so that I can work on projects like this fulltime. Give it a look! https://www.patreon.com/firstfive And if you're interested in finding more short games, consider hitting that subscribe button and I'll be highlighting a new one every week! And if you want to hear more insights into random games I'm playing, check out First Five on Twitter: https://twitter.com/FirstFiveReview I do have to put out one special thank you in this one. I've started leaning more and more on World of Longplays to speed up my editing time, and that website is a godsend, because I don't have to play 40 hour rpgs to get one clip way at the end. All the Mass Effect footage is from there, specifically... Mass Effect 1 + 2 longplays: kireev20000 Mass Effect 3 longplay: boneofhead In addition, if you want to read the full Eurogamer interview with Kan Gao I mentioned, you can find it here: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-05-18-kan-gao-to-the-moon-and-back
