Toji and Maki have the similar Heavenly Pact and the show leans into that as the reason they were "rejected". I'll put a warning here just because, but it's just a theory and I don't actually know. My theory (for Maki at least) is that this rejection is actually a test since in S1 they had the flash back of her talking to the clan head who said something along the lines of "I will give you trials befitting the clan leader". The clan then gets in the way of her promotions because they want her to succeed without relying on the Zenin name. I'm betting either Maki actually understands this and Toji didn't, or they are doing this BECAUSE they saw the wasted potential in what happened with Toji.

I don't think its a test. They literally consider anyone not born with cursed energy as less than human, people not born with their hereditary techniques as second class citizens alongside women. The Zenin clan are not nice people, at all.

When you come to the season finale of Buffy, I suggest that you watch it, discuss it, and then watch it again (you can do that off screen). Then have a final discussion. That might be helpful...and you will know what I mean...:-)
