What people often dismiss or fail or address when they (rightfully) call Eren out for his genocide is that while, yes, there are a few other “choices” in lieu of the rumbling killing the whole world, none of them APPEAL to Eren and his drive to free his people. Those other options aren’t options to him due to their lack of certainty or finality to the problem. Crushing Marley would still breed further terror and resentment among the rest of the world and you can only maintain peace through fear for so long. That would merely delay war, not prevent it. Another idea people say often - killing off just the upper echelon of each country, the ones responsible for pulling the strings - would be far too complex a task to carry out with the worlds military approaching their doorstep and most of the civilian population of the world uncaring towards the plight of the Eldians. Diplomacy (with the threat of the rumbling) would only last until the next world war or charismatic leader came along to stir the pot. Eren won’t be around forever to protect his friends and people. I can go on and on that each alternative option to the rumbling indeed has its merits and even their own moral benefit, absolutely, but none of them appeal to Eren whose sole desire is to protect his friends and their freedom NOW, and to solidify their place in the world for the generations to come. The rest of the world is a price he’s willing to pay, monster or not. Genocide? Absolutely, it is and it’s terrible. But let’s not pretend he’s simply an edgy teenager with his hand on the doomsday button, laughing maniacally. There’s more nuance than that to his situation even if you disagree with him.
